Headteacher says I can't go on holiday

Scuzzymummy · 25/06/2020 23:21

Ok so this might not be a problem in a few weeks and please please believe me when I say I have done everything possible to ensure my pupils have had my attention and expertise when needed during lockdown. I have recorded lessons, marked work, given feedback etc... I know lots on MN have some very strong feelings about teachers at the moment 😬.
So I have a holiday abroad booked for the 18yh August. I have been hanging on and hanging on to see if we can go. We are so desperate for a break- who isn't- but my headteacher has emailed today and said that of quarantine measures are still in place in September then holidays at the end of August need to be cancelled. What do I do, I know I need to be back in September, god knows I want to have actually children in front of me not a bloody screen. But if we cancel we will loose hundreds and hundreds plus the holiday. We can't change the date, my husband is not able to change. Help!

So Venue you'd just lose your money that you'd paid for your family holiday then? Because if the FO lifts restrictions but the quarantine remains, there will be no refund.

Venue20 · 26/06/2020 10:54

@rookiemere

She should be fired That's really going to help with the teacher shortage s isn't it? Fire someone for asking what the policy is for quarantine related time off for a holiday they booked well before any of this started. Glad I don't work for you venue.
I wouldn't hesitate in firing someone with the morals of the OP.
Mistressiggi · 26/06/2020 10:55

@WutheringTights I can only speak as a teacher employed in Scotland. We do receive statutory holiday entitlement, the rest of the (longer than average) holidays are unpaid. All holidays are fixed as you know.
We have in fact had a week of holiday cancelled here as we are returning a week early. This obviously needs to be repaid and will happen (for some areas) at the end of next year.

Smurf123 · 26/06/2020 10:56

Ni has said that teachers won't be penalised for holidays that were booked prior to the date quarantine was introduced. That if you have to quarantine in return which overlaps with the back to school dates you obliged to work from home for the period of quarantine.

Venue20 · 26/06/2020 10:57

@Mistressiggi

You're obviously feeling very strongly about this which comes from a place of pain or fear I imagine so I will not reply as harshly as you about the OP. I've had two holidays cancelled due to CV, one I've had the money back for one not yet. If I felt it was safe to travel, and if I couldn't get the money back, I would Absolutley be going on holiday in my holiday time. That's what it's there for. There is no guarantee the quarantine rules will be in place. There is an official agreement in my country that quarantined staff can work from home (we will still need people doing that) on full pay. So your view is clearly not a mainstream one. That's a lot of people would end up being sacked, and to what purpose? How would that improve things for children? Fortunately you are not working in HR Smile
You have no idea where I work. How ignorant of you to assume. And no I'm not coming from a place of Dr. But a place where we didn't make a total shitshow of this. The UK is a disgrace and this thread shows why.
Mistressiggi · 26/06/2020 10:57

Venue I'm a left-leaning, feminist vegetarian with particular religious views. I think affairs and eating meat are immoral. I think sending your dc private when you work in state is immoral. I think supporting nuclear weapons is immoral. I'm not keen on Boden wearing either.
Thank god I'm not in charge of hiring and firing if it all came down to "morality" Grin

LemonTT · 26/06/2020 10:58

To the poster who asked if I have tried to get refunds or rearrange holidays. Yes I have for two holidays. Where I didn’t get a refund I was allowed to rearrange. My advice is to just try fgs. The defeatist attitude Of some posters is tedious. Why do people always have a reason why everything is impossible. If this is how the teaching professional really is, and I doubt it, I would find it impossible to work there.

MissEliza · 26/06/2020 10:59

The U.K. is a disgrace and this thread shows why. I suggest you stop posting on it then.

Mistressiggi · 26/06/2020 10:59

Well I assumed you don't work in HR as if you did you would be pretty crap at it. Confused I was trying to be kind - will not bother!

MarshaBradyo · 26/06/2020 11:01

I doubt quarantine will last that long unless a very high rate in a specific country.

I’d just keep it as it is. You gain nothing from cancelling it anyway.

Clavinova · 26/06/2020 11:02

I can only speak as a teacher employed in Scotland. We do receive statutory holiday entitlement, the rest of the (longer than average) holidays are unpaid.

Teachers in Scotland are entitled to 40 days’ holiday at full pay;

Serin · 26/06/2020 11:05

Same position here. We have cancelled and rebooked for the UK. Fully refunded by holiday insurers (-£50).
Couldn't live with the stress!!

Mistressiggi · 26/06/2020 11:08

Ah Clav, do you have that link on a kind of speed dial somewhere? Yes we get paid holidays - and the rest (about 5 weeks) are unpaid. Our paid holidays also include all the bank holidays etc they are not in addition as in some jobs ("6 weeks + bank holidays" type thing).
Do you have an actual point?
It seems to be "teachers' contracts are great!" so why not just own it and actually say that ? Would save you a lot of time with your endless links.
I think I have a good contract. Just as well as the actual job is shit.

I can post where I fancy thanks.
Mistressiggi · 26/06/2020 11:11

Shit teacher = teacher with different views on a moral dilemma.
That's interesting. I thought it was about how well you taught, exam passes, support for pupils etc?

MissEliza · 26/06/2020 11:12

But @Venue20 why would you want to post on a thread you apparently think is so nasty? That makes no sense.

@Mistressiggi so have you had to cancel your holiday?

Clavinova · 26/06/2020 11:14

Ah Clav, do you have that link on a kind of speed dial somewhere?

No - I'm on the thread today - 10.37 - 2 seconds to google.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 26/06/2020 11:15

But @Venue20 why would you want to post on a thread you apparently think is so nasty? That makes no sense

Probably still smarting from having red ink on her work in her own schooldays when the teacher wrote 'try harder' and 'does not make sense'. Grin

Venue20 · 26/06/2020 11:15

Ok. So you don't understand? Who cares? What does it matter to You?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 26/06/2020 11:16

I guess the stupidity and cuntishness just grated.

Cinderellasshoe · 26/06/2020 11:19

Hi OP,

Firstly thank you for looking after and educating our kids during a pandemic. I know how hard you will have worked and it is a thankless task. Everyone has an opinion and teaching is a profession not understood but judged all the time.
Secondly for your mental health and well being you need and are entitled to a holiday.

This is why I left teacher after 10 years. It is such a tough gig. Even though I miss my classroom and the kids it wasn't worth my sanity and basic rights like holidays.

Mistressiggi · 26/06/2020 11:19

Misseliza I'd to cancel my Easter one (well it was cancelled for me!) and my summer holiday was to be very early July so I'm not going to go, it is as yet uncancelled but I think will be due to FCO advice.
