I've begun watching the film as people were raving about it.
Is it me or is the story line horrible. Kidnapping a women into falling in love with you?
It's abusive, doesn't float my boat.
I'm a person who has been through DA, and I follow certain pages and people who are knowledgeable in this subject. Makes me feel uncomfortable seeing a women pinned against a wall, touched inappropriately, kissed when she doesn't want it. I know it's a film but some how it feels like it's sexualising it?
All this violent sex culture that sometimes results in death I find disturbing and films like this just glamorizes it.
Aibu?

Clearly it’s appealing to a wide audience and it’s not my place to judge anyone’s kinks or turn ons, but it’s curious that it seems to be a very common theme.

I think it's only a popular theme if the man is very good looking & rich.

@botedbored this is true! There’s an element of being swept away by a wealthy man and not having to be worried about money which is obviously an old trope.

@Samtsirch the film they’re talking about is nothing to do with Natascha Kampush or Wolfgang Priklopil. However, there are mentions of abuse in this thread due to the nature of the film and if this is triggering I’d recommend unfollowing the thread.

No, but much like that 50 Shades crap, it presents abuse as romantic. It blurs the lines between “she just needs the right kind of persuasion” and “rapey bastard”.

I think it's pretty farcical that he says he won't touch her without consent etc whilst he gropes her. I think most 18 yr olds watching that would know it's not romantic & lacks consent.

I just think people have let all those things go because the man in it is very attractive. I can't think of the last time I've seen a sex scene in a film where the leads were a similar age, both attractive & the camera lingered on both bodies not just the female.

@Sparklesocks it's also a ego boost. the man who can have anything wants you.

@botedbored definitely - and he’s never found anyone until now Hmm

I havent seen it but have seen so many fb posts about it. Sounds like a more rapey version of the collector with terence stamp.

50 shades of grey was also a young very rich man who was a brat and got what ever he wanted. Although it seems like she liked him back unlike 365 days where she's held against her will.

Yeah I would agree with that. People like it because he's hot whereas if he wasn't hot it would be more comparable to the movie Misery than to 50 shades.

I'm hoping that the people that do watch it have enough critical thinking skills to realise most kidnappers aren't ridiculously hot millionaires who take you shopping and despite kidnapping you have enough self control to not have sex with you until you want it.

I'm trying not to judge because Overboard is one of my favourite ever movies but I understand that if it happened in real life it would be illegal and also really cruel and that they deliberately set up GH's character to make you feel like she 'deserved it', so I'm hoping fans of this are the same and can enjoy it for the entertainment value whilst also recognising that it's problematic and contributes to a culture that doesn't like women to have agency over their own sexuality.

I read the description and decided not to watch it - glad I did now!

Yes it would be a horror film if the man didn't look like this.

@outcomethewolves ha I love Overboard & Housesitter.

But then you could apply that to RL too. It's putting the assumption forward that as long as a man is good looking and sexy he can do as he pleases? Which obviously is wrong on so many levels and is not the case.

Report
botedbored · 26/06/2020 09:49

But even though he's good looking I don't think anyone thinks his behaviour is right & would be right in RL. My point was people are more likely to forgive the problematic story because the man is good looking.

I mean it's just a soft core porn film with a shitty, stupid script. It has an 18 rating & I think most 18 yr olds would recognise how contradictory & stupid it is.

Report
djeorh · 26/06/2020 09:54

It's horrendous. The only reason it's popular and getting the attention it has is because the guy is good looking. If he was a fat, bald 50 year old it would be getting the criticism it deserves.

Report
LochJessMonster · 26/06/2020 09:55

There will be plenty of people who say it romanticises violence/Stockholm syndrome etc etc but it’s basically a harmless soft porn film with very good looking protagonists.
Plot is a bit weak but the acting is excellent.

It’s quite clearly not real life, it’s a film.

Us women are quite capable of separating fact from fiction.

It’s also that fantasy of being so desirable to a rich handsome man, he has to go to extremes to secure you...... And the sex scenes in this one are very hot. Agree his character is a shit and consent merely a concept for little people.....
The shit can clearly shag for Italy once she dries him off with her tongue though. 🤨
Tosh, obviously, not at all real - but most sexual fantasies are just that - fantasies.
If you look at even any romcom who would actually want the hero if they werent good looking/sexy? Nearly all stalkery or very screwed up, serial shaggers, or lovely guys totally blinded by a bitch with big tits for most of the film!
You temporarily buy into the fantasy, you don’t believe it is possible and desirable in real life do you? I’m sure like most people I didn’t take it seriously?
My friend and I giggled through most of it, admired the clothes, sets and production values, freeze framed the shower scene (partly for his arse but also for the amazing shower) discussed how sore we’d be after the yacht scene and inevitable sunburn/cystitis (but watched it twice, phwoar), sighed at his stamina, laughed at the XBF and generally treated it as the escapist adult nonsense it clearly is.

That shower (scene) was incredible.
Not sure it’s practical having bathroom/bedroom without a door though.

I have to say if a director could make a movie about an ugly, skint person who kidnaps someone and they still fall in love with his cracking kidnappy personality and they can manage to get the audience sympathising with said kidnapper too, I'd totally watch it!
