Cot bed help please

Hi

I was wondering what other people do in this situation please?

My just just turned 1 year old has a new found habit of throwing himself out the cot, I can't lower the cot anymore than it is. And he's in a sleeping bag and still able to do it.

Surely he's too young for a toddler bed??

Toddler bed sounds like the safest option - with a gate on his room, and check the room is fully child-proofed. Just watch for him working out how to get over that - a colleague's child mastered that very early too. (Not sure what you do then? Two gates, one above each other?)

A colleague's younger one got up onto her brother's top bunk in her sleeping bag. I think they gave up on them at that point.

A toddler bed is fine - my DCs went into one at 16m and 14m, so not much older. At 12m both camped on ready beds (air mattress with attached covers). If you are concerned about any falls out of bed just put the mattress directly onto the floor for now. If you use a single flat sheet sideways and tucked under the mattress they won't fall out as easily (I used a single duvet, but it's too hot for that at the mo). Fit an extra tall stair gate to the bedroom door if you have a climber.

Look for a Montessori floor bed

I used a toddler bed and a bed guard. Worked great. Alternatively a mattress on the floor for a little while.

If he can get out of the cot, you MUST take the sides off. So, your choices then are mattress on floor, toddler bed with or without a bed guard, or a single bed.

A friend of mine has a DD who has just turned one and she just moved her into a toddler bed. Obviously she made sure the room was totally baby proofed, and she put a stair gate at the door because her DD can also reach door handles well enough to open them (she's really tall).

I put my son in a normal bed and left the cot mattress on the floor next to him. But he never fell out.

Lower the base of the cot so it's on the floor. The mattress is usually still high enough so he can't slip under the cot bars and would now be low enough that he wouldn't be able to climb over them. I know a few people who have done this and it's worked.

Thank you so much everyone for your advice! I've ordered an IKEA Hermnes so hopefully that will sort this out. The mattress on the floor in the cot would have been a great idea but there is a built in draw 😭
