To not understand why people have a problem with wearing a mask?

Where I live masks are mandatory for everyone over the age of 6 in any public indoor space (shop, train station, doctor's surgery etc) and where it is not possible to guarantee the 2m distance. 100 euro fine for non compliance.

Of course some people break this rule but the vast majority wear masks including a lot of kids younger than 6. My mum and dad in the UK also wear masks when out atm.... But they also said its ay best a 40% uptake and that in the supermarket the staff don't wear them!!!

Here on MumsNet i see lots of people saying that they "won't wear a mask".... Why? It's to protect others so surely its a good thing to do even if they are a bit uncomfortable?
In Asian countries (China, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea) mask wearing is and always has been done to protect others.

Why?

Where is the evidence that 'basic' facemasks used in the community actually slows the spread?
The evidence I had seen briefly was conflicted because other rules were being forgotten.
Just because other countries do something doesn't mean it's a good thing or indeed appropriate.

I developed a very long and extremely painful sinus infection and after several attempts to cure it my GP referred me to an ENT specialist.

I asked my GP why he just couldn't take a swab to identify what the infection was and he told me that there is a huge amount of bacteria in your nostrils so it wouldn't be possible to identify just one. Any of them could be the cause.

I, therefore, will resist wearing a mask where I am breathing out bacteria into a mask only to breathe it in again. No thanks!

There are conflicting reports as to the benefits in protecting others by wearing a face covering other it is mandatory on public transport so no room to argue there. Some countries who have managed the spread better are those with mandatory wearing of face covering for more situations than just public transport.

Countries where everyone wore masks saw COVID death rates 100 times lower than projected www.fastcompany.com/90519909/countries-where-everyone-wears-masks-saw-covid-death-rates-100-times-lower-than-projected?fbclid=IwAR0957QLFJ2_C6CLM7bNHfN9zQSHinwm-BW1C1a7jGF6mWdxToyJoKDrt9Y

“We looked at the data from 198 countries around the world, and we looked at mortality from coronavirus,” says lead author Christopher Leffler, a physician and professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. “What we found is that the countries that introduced masks quickly—that is, before the outbreak had much of a chance to spread within their country—had a much lower mortality.”

If your infection rate is low, face coverings help keep it that way, whilst allowing people to live a closer to normal life style.

Why can people in other countries wear a mask and successfully reduce the transmission rate but many of the UK population just come up with objections.

cardibach · 25/06/2020 13:59

Parker maybe they have easy access to masks which are more effective and easier to wear. I have some I bought from Etsy (about the on,y place with any left) for situations where it’s mandatory but they are very difficult to wear indeed. The more ‘medical’ looking ones seem to be made of lighter material, though it mist be more dense to give protection I suppose. I think while the majority of us are having to buy masks knocked up by someone at home it’s going to be an issue...

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 25/06/2020 15:55

My 10m old baby is really freaked out by me wearing a mask. I wear one where required though.

Because we are not used to being so controlled. For many their own common sense was enough to keep them catching or spreading COVID no need for experts

Parker231 · 25/06/2020 16:13

Using common sense obviously hasn’t worked so the mandatory introduction of wearing face covering on public transport.

HeIenaDove · 25/06/2020 16:15

@Fosler yes these kinds of issues havent even been considered

HeIenaDove · 25/06/2020 16:34

I posted this last night on here last night

Prove their disability to get PIP

Prove their disability to get food
Prove their disability so they dont have to risk their health in a mask.

And got proved right yet again today

It is now compulsory to wear a Face Covering when travelling on bus services unless you are exempt from doing so.

From Monday 29th June Passengers will no longer be allowed to travel without a Face Covering unless they are able to prove they are exempt.

PestymcPestFace · 25/06/2020 16:40

Helena, I have spent much time this week sorting out masks and face coverings for shielding people, their families and various disabled people. You talk a lot of uninformed nonsense.

HeIenaDove · 25/06/2020 16:58

Do i? Not according to the person ive just consulted.

HeIenaDove · 25/06/2020 16:59

Equality Act 2010. Under the Act the only body qualified to determine if a person is disabled or not are the courts. Most disabled ppl do not have proof of the symptoms of their disability, so this creates impossible barrier.

HeIenaDove · 25/06/2020 17:01

Yes its almost as if medical conditions affect each individual in different ways isnt it.? Its almost as if human beings arent all affected in the same way by the same conditions

HeIenaDove · 25/06/2020 17:08

I bet some of the ppl flocking to the beaches and fighting today are some of those who moan about ppl with medical conditions not being able to wear masks.

Bloomburger · 25/06/2020 17:13

Because my glasses steam up and I can't see.

Changednamesorry · 25/06/2020 17:30

Why would you assume that people who have behaved entirely irresponsibly in one way would be entirely responsible in another? Confused

OP posts:
HeIenaDove · 25/06/2020 17:38

Are you saying that harassing people with medical conditions is being responsible?

HeIenaDove · 25/06/2020 17:57

The guidelines are atrocious The DDA 1995 removed of the ”green card scheme” to prove that you were a disabled person now in 2020 It seems that authorities want to reinstate it

yeah funny that!!

Parker231 · 25/06/2020 18:53

Why are people against wearing a face covering which could protect other people?

Carouselfish · 25/06/2020 18:58

Low blood pressure and pregnant
Can hardly breathe anyway at mo. Mask makes it nearly impossible.

HeIenaDove · 25/06/2020 19:04

@Parker231 Try doing the really radical action of reading the thread!

Parker231 · 25/06/2020 19:12

I’ve read the thread. My comment stands.

BankofNook · 25/06/2020 19:55

Why are people against wearing a face covering which could protect other people?

In the case of my son it's because I'm not going to force him into extreme distress in order to protect others at the expense of his own safety and wellbeing.
