Co-vid or Cov-id ... how to do say it?

Dee1975 · 22/06/2020 20:43

Ok, so I probably need to lighten up (!) but I say ‘co-vid’ yet some people on the telly are pronouncing it as ‘cov-id’ and it really winds me up!! What do you say? Am I being unreasonable in thinking they are saying it wrong!!!

Co-vid

Itstheprinciple · 22/06/2020 20:45

I say co-vid but have heard both. Just as long as they don't say cORvid like my DH. It makes me scream inside every time.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 22/06/2020 20:45
go to 2:06 of this video and she does the correct pronunciation, I pronounce it Co-vid
Tanfastic · 22/06/2020 20:46

I don't think it matters. I pronounce Co-vid. Everybody else where I work pronounces it the same (NHS).

bubbleup · 22/06/2020 20:46

Co-vid. I assume it's that pleb Gove? Why he has to say it different I'll never know Confused

Crispsnatcher · 22/06/2020 20:48

Co-vid.... but truthfully, both ways sound the same in my head no matter how much emphasis I put on the i

Gertie75 · 22/06/2020 20:50

I say cOvid but have heard quite a few pronounce it covvid, maybe it's regional, I'm in Staffs.

RunningNinja79 · 22/06/2020 20:53

Sorry not sure which is which in your OP, but I say it to rhyme with no rather than have the o said in the same way as in dot (sorry couldn't think of an actual word). For some really irrational reason it irritates me when its pronounced that way. Petty I know.

MarshaBradyo · 22/06/2020 20:55

Co to rhyme with show

It makes me double take when other way

HowLongCanICallitBabyWeight · 22/06/2020 20:56

Co-vid (like Co-op) but I have a colleague who says Co-vaid like Live aid , I can't get worked up about it though

22Giraffes · 22/06/2020 20:57

Co-vid, anything else sounds weird to me!

thecatsthecats · 22/06/2020 21:22

I hate cov-id, but mainly because the only person I know who says that is a spectacular arsehole.

KitKat1985 · 22/06/2020 21:25

Co-Vid.

OhhhPeee · 22/06/2020 21:28

Cove-id. The first part rhymes with Gove. Which is ironic, because he pronounces it the other way.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 22/06/2020 21:28

My kids are always telling me off for saying cov - id (i.e. to rhyme with 'of'), and most newsreaders etc seem to say co - vid.

However, it's a made up word! It didn't exist before this year. The 'co' bit comes from corona and the vi from virus. I don't know where the 'd' comes from. So I suppose logically we should pronounce the 'co' in the same way as the first part of 'corona'. Which in my accent is kind of like 'cuh'

HTH!

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 22/06/2020 21:31

Just to add: from a linguistic point of view, the 'co' is NOT the same as the 'co' in for example co-parenting. Which is a prefix meaning 'jointly' or 'with'.

Corona means crown. The virus is crown-shaped.

PlanBea · 22/06/2020 21:33

Co-vid as it is the Co(Rona) Vi(rus) D(isease)

cologne4711 · 22/06/2020 21:33

When I did the Futurelearn course they pronounced it co-vee.

NameChange2PostThis · 22/06/2020 21:38

I say Co-vid rhymes with Gove-id

But my family member who is a Covid doctor says Cov-id with an o sound same as the o in hover and bother - so I suspect I’m wrong and he’s right.

Lweji · 22/06/2020 21:39

Strictly, the vi should be as in virus, so everybody is wrong. Grin

Whycantibetangy · 22/06/2020 21:41

I pronounce it Cor - oh - nahGrin

Lweji · 22/06/2020 21:46

I pronounce it Cor - oh - nah

Do you really pronounce Covid as Cor-oh-nah? Wink

SadSisters · 22/06/2020 21:47

It’s cow-veed (to rhyme with how-seed)

Dee1975 · 22/06/2020 22:34

Ha yes it is gove! Gets right on my nerves!

OP posts:
Dee1975 · 22/06/2020 22:37

Glad I’m not the only one who gets annoyed by the ‘cov-id’! ‘Cov(e)-id’ is the way to go!
