Ring stuck on swollen finger

Jadefeather7 · 18/06/2020 14:21

My rings are stuck on my finger as they have swollen up in the third trimester. I remember when I had my last baby I had swelling after the birth due to drugs I think (c section) so potentially could end up with even more swelling! I’ve tried fairly liquid, winded, putting them in the freezer, tying string around the finger. I can get the ring up to my knuckle but then my finger starts turning blueish! Argh. What should I do?

You might have to have them cut off which is what happened to a friend of mine. It is dangerous to leave them on when the finger is swollen.

HighBrows · 18/06/2020 14:25

Have you try steeping your hand in cold water, might help it to contract and then use oil?

TheSandgroper · 18/06/2020 14:25

Get them cut off.

theconstantinoplegardener · 18/06/2020 14:25

Have you tried oil to make it slippery? Or better still, KY jelly if you have any lying around.

Also, try putting your hand in fairly hot water - the heat might make the ring metal expand so it slips off more easily.

Try holding your hand above your head and gently stroking down hand and arm to armpit - may help lymphatic drainage and slightly reduce swelling

CherieBabySpliffUp · 18/06/2020 14:26

If you've attempted all that in quick succession you may have increased the swelling? Unfortunately it sounds like you might have to have it cut off, though I'm not sure you'll be able to get this done at a jewellers now. Sounds like you're going to have to head to A&E.

Jadefeather7 · 18/06/2020 14:40

Have tried elevation cold and oil but no luck.

I really don’t want to go to A&E right now :(

Have you tried frozen peas?

GreenTulips · 18/06/2020 14:44

You can have it done at the fire station and there won’t be a queue

User0ne · 18/06/2020 14:46

My fingers always shrink when they're cold. I had to take my ring off when I was pregnant with Ds2 due to swelling and it was hard to do. I waited till the time of day when my hands were least swollen, held my hand in very cold water for 30mins and used oil to lubricate and remove the ring.

Tying strong round your finger sounds dangerous

LouiseTrees · 18/06/2020 14:49

Have you tried butter/sun cream?

WagathaChristieDoesItAgain · 18/06/2020 14:49

Putting your hand in cold water, Vaseline and slowly slowly twisting the ring side to side rather than trying to pull it off is all that's worked for me in the past. Good luck op

Changename5000 · 18/06/2020 14:51

Try this

TeddyIsaHe · 18/06/2020 14:53

You don’t need to go to A&E for a stuck ring, get dp or yourself to a DIY store and buy a ring cutter, or go to a jewellers.

HibiscusPot · 18/06/2020 14:54

Google the ribbon method, it works. I got really stuck rings off. Works particularly well with a ‘ribbon’ cut from old tights, you can compress the finger with it

SimonJT · 18/06/2020 14:56

Elevation with peas for at least ten minutes then get someone to do the floss/ribbon method. I managed to use this when I broke a finger a few years ago, I was determined not to have it cut off.

Windyatthebeach · 18/06/2020 15:00

Have a cool shower op. Panic raises your temp and less chance of getting them off.

SephrinaX · 18/06/2020 15:02

Better to get them cut off in a jeweller rather than a hospital if you can. A jeweller will make a better job of it!

YeahWhatevver · 18/06/2020 15:03

Try this, it really works

Smithlets80 · 18/06/2020 15:28

My rings are always looser later on in the day so maybe leave it for a while and then have another go.

FanSpamTastic · 18/06/2020 15:31

You can try athletic tape or kinesiology tape. I hurt my figure and had severe swelling.

I had my rings cut off before i got to see a physio and still had swelling despite cutting the rings off; but the physio gave me tape to reduce the swelling. Wind it on from the end of your finger down towards your hand - firm but not so tight that you cut off the circulation. This may give you a reprieve so that you can get the rings off without cutting them off.

Euclid · 19/06/2020 12:55

OP I hope that you managed to get your rings off safely without having to have them cut off.
