It's deeply unpleasant to pick a name and assign some personality issue to it. Often , in the context it is used, it is designed as an insult or slight to those on the receiving end, too.. There are some real idiots around, unfortunately.

Demanding someone explain why they find something amusing is almost 'karen' thinking in and of itself.

Karen took off long before Reddit started using it, it generally took off because it is a humerous stereo type that most people who have met via working in customer service or actually know a karen can relate to.

This constant trying to be outraged at a meme and try and apply sexism to it on a forum which regularly uses terms such as Gammon and think 'cockwomble' is the height of humour is comical in itself.

I agree.

@leftovercoffeecake

I’m sorry I became a bit irate with you. I know what it’s like to be treated like absolute shit working in customer service roles - I have been there many times!

This Karen stuff gets to me because I’m constantly sent memes, some of them really nasty (top 10 reasons Karen is the worst!) some of them have triggered my eating disorder (“Karen, you fat slag!”Is a common one sent to me) and it does impact on my mental health. I’m hoping it will die out so the more people say they find it funny, the more it winds me up.
Don’t want to argue with strangers in the internet about it x

Tim Nice-but-dim is long before soshul meeja, he is a Harry Enfield character from the late 90s/early 2000s. As was Kevin the teenager who will make sense to anyone who has parented a teenager, or indeed been one.

the Karen and Carol thing has passed my middle-aged self by.

I'm sorry to hear you've been sent things like that. There will always be people who take things too far and abuse the point of the joke. Comments like 'fat slag' are never necessary and are just spiteful for the sake of being spiteful.

If people are sending you Karen memes just because that's your name, then they're idiots. Try not to take it to heart (although that's easier said than done) but I assure you it's about a character and nothing against you personally.

I really only discovered the Karen meme a month ago. And I use social media a lot, though mainly Facebook and that's only friends of mine of course. I've never gone on Reddit either.

Ageist and misogynist casual insults may well be 'an Internet thing' but they're particularly misplaced on a platform which, congruent with its name, is populated predominantly by (supposedly) grown-up women.

@ErrolTheDragon Precisely.

And anyway what do you call people who insist on a bullying meme, then denounce anyone who doesn't agree with it as typical of those exact qualities the meme mentions. It's a win -win for them, in their world view, isn't it?

The silver lining of a nasty meme like this is you can weed out the people you thought were ok, but are in fact not.

Hopefully it'll be Oscar, Evie, Isla, Henry, Jasper, Amelia and Isabella's turn to be shorthand for something - will happily wait a few decades until that happens Grin

If you look on Urban Dictionary every name has a definition, even Oscar et al.

Tis' quite amusing if you're not a permanently offended type.
