Am I the only one looking for the thread OP mentioned? Could someone give me a clue where to find it? Have done a search bit nothing.

leftovercoffeecake · 18/06/2020 12:23

I swear there’s been a new thread moaning about Karen every single day this week. It’s getting boring!

Wtfdidwedo · 18/06/2020 12:25

The Karen joke has been around since 2016/17 on Reddit and has been used in retail/hospitality memes for years.

PuppyMonkey · 18/06/2020 12:25

I saw it on a thread about MIL being a pain I think? Definitely one I was reading this morning.

ArriettyJones · 18/06/2020 12:25

Yeah, there have been quite a few protestors “moaning” about racism this week too.

Must be moaners’ week, eh?

TooTiredTodayOk · 18/06/2020 12:26

I've never seen it on here. Seen plenty of 'Wendy' though.

Blm and being called Karen aren’t really comparable Confused
ArriettyJones · 18/06/2020 12:35

Blm and being called Karen aren’t really comparable

You mean you think misogyny isn’t as serious as racism?

Or that everyday slurs aren’t as damaging as structural discrimination?

Or what?

majesticallyawkward · 18/06/2020 12:41

That's got to be a record, going from Karen jokes to BLM in less than 35 posts?

It's a fairly old internet joke, memes have been around for years... there are also a 'Chad' and at least 1 other male equivalent.

leftovercoffeecake · 18/06/2020 12:42

It’s not misogynistic. It’s a meme that describes the overly entitled who bully those who work in customer service.

The fact you’re comparing being called Karen to racism is ridiculous and a perfect example of Karen behaviour Wink

Lynda07 · 18/06/2020 12:49

I agree with you, recycled. An American 'fad' that has found its way here though, so far, not that common. I didn't know 'Carol' was being used similarly! It's horrible.

I expect everyone remembers when 'Sharon' was a name everyone took the mick out of, for different reasons but equally unkind.

A lot of people jump on the bandwagon without even knowing the reasons behind it all.

Lynda07 · 18/06/2020 12:51

...
They are all called 'Karen', are they, what about the many Karens who are not 'overly entitled' and bullying. Honestly! What sheep.

There have been multiple threads about this. Why bring it up AGAIN?

What, no? No one is saying every customer who is entitled is actually called Karen. It’s not a literal thing Confused

It’s just a meme, “Wow that customer was so rude, what a Karen”.

Just like how douchey frat boys are known as Chad. They’re not actually all called Chad.

LightenUpSummer · 18/06/2020 12:57

Never seen "Carol" before this thread.

Some people are the most atrocious arseholes.

Have only seen "Karen" mentioned on here as it relates to misoogyny and ageism. Not doubting it's happened, just that the vast majority here see it as nasty. I hope anyway.

CatRamsey · 18/06/2020 13:00

I saw a thread mentioning Carol earlier but I just assumed that was the persons actual name or a name the OP had used instead of the person's real name for privacy.

Perhaps I'm naive.

With regards to Karen though, I've also seen Linda used in a similar way on other websites.

ScorpionQueen · 18/06/2020 13:05

I'm happy to see as many threads calling out casual ageism and misogyny as posters want to start. It should be challenged at every turn.
Maybe instead of moaning that is been mentioned before, ask yourselves why it is so prevalent that people keep having to comment on it.

ArriettyJones · 18/06/2020 13:20

Of course it’s misogynistic, and ageist.

ArriettyJones · 18/06/2020 13:25

And, no, it’s not, because I’m not the right ethnicity or age to be the object of the meme and I’m not called Karen. I am female, though, and I will - hopefully - get older.

Fifteensunflowers · 18/06/2020 13:27

I worked in customer service as a sales assistant for many years. The "Karen" character that we're seeing is definitely accurate. I can't even begin to tell you the number of times I was screamed at for things out of my control, such as not accepting a refund for an item that was bought over a year ago, or being out of stock of a certain shoe size.

Don't get me wrong, there were all kinds of problematic people that I had to deal with (shoplifters etc), but the overly entitled, rude, turning up their nose at you customers were all what people describe as Karens. It was never teenagers, or young couples. I know some people may think this is ageist, but to put it simply, it was always people of a certain age that displayed the 'Karen' behaviour.

Lol! My name is Karen and one of my sisters is called Linda and (surprise, surprise) we are middle aged white women.

Whilst it’s slightly embarrassing to have those names at the moment one of my sisters does indeed display all the characteristics of the Karen stereotype. As a shorthand to describe a certain type of woman it’s very accurate.

savagemouse · 18/06/2020 14:08

My teenage sister works for a fast food chain. She's told me many customer horror stories. Both she and her colleagues have been reduced to tears by Karens (her words).

Her and her friends at work tend to use the term to cheer each other up. If someone's upset because they've just been humiliated and shouted at, it's a way to make them smile and laugh.

She doesn't use the term to attack random people called Karen.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 18/06/2020 14:09

I’ve not heard of the Carol thing, but I suspect it’s the same old ageists misogyny.

As for Karen it’s been adopted by the internet to describe middle aged women with the audacity to have an opinion. How dare they!

I’ve worked in customer facing roles before and I tell you the vast majority of strops came from men, but there is no nam for them, so that must be allowed?
