The term isn't used to attack people called Karen or Carol, it's used to stereotype in the same way Derek or Shanteez are. If you say those names, you conjure up a certain image so it saves time when discussing someone and their behaviour.

It's like saying efficiency is a trait of Germans. If someone says "she dealt with the complaint as efficiently as a German" it immediately implies the complaint was handled well. But nobody would assume that all Germans are efficient in all instances.

Having an opinion doesn’t make you a Karen. For example:

Complaining to the waiter at a restaurant that your steak is undercooked - not Karen behaviour.

Screaming at the waiter and demanding that they need to be fired because your steak is undercooked - Karen like behaviour.

If you look up Karen on YouTube, you’ll see some perfect examples of the horrific behaviour the meme is about.

The problem is, a lot of people do. They have been given the green light to do so.
People really need to stop and think about the wider impact this kind of thing has on people.
My teenage nephew goes to school with a girl called Karen. Apparently she is getting bullied for it and has people shouting “shut up Karen!” every time she says anything. Imagine being a teenage girl with low self esteem, having that shouted at you every time you are brave enough to say something in class. I bet most of the people who make Karen jokes would be up in arms if their kids were being bullied because of their name. The kids doing the bullying have probably heard their own parents making the same jokes.

Genuine question - why the name Karen? Why not call them many of the words we have to describe that kind of behaviour. Why is it funnyto you to use that name?

It’s because if you outright said “she’s such a typical middle aged white woman” you’d sound stupid. But “she’s such a Karen” is acceptable somehow.

Karen was most popular from 1955 to 1970 and one of its origins as an Internet meme was a Reddit sub called Fuck You Karen.

This explains the Karen origin. It’s funny to me because it’s a viral meme.

@leftovercoffeecake have you name changed? Were you vikingwife the other day? I can't understand why people find name calling so funny. It is pathetic and something that should be embarrassing to you. If you are an adult, please go and sit on your lowest step for ten minutes and feel ashamed of your behaviour.

I didn’t ask you to explain the origin of the meme. I’m glad we cleared up that you will find something funny if it’s viral Confused

Saying you find something funny because it’s viral is probably one of the most pathetic reasons I’ve heard.

I've seen one post referring to Carol today and assumed that it was the name of the person in question.

Your ‘genuine question’ was why the name Karen, so I linked you to a page which gives an answer for that.

Memes go viral because people find them funny, that’s how they work.

I do apologise. I forgot that I’m only allowed to enjoy humour that is underground and no one has ever heard of before.

It's definitely not just a MN thing but I honestly think I it's used as a yet another dig at women. I mean it's never Bob or Steve is it - despite men being far far more likely to perpetrate the kind of things "Karen's" do

So basically, your answer is that the internet told you to.

Saying you find something funny because it’s viral is like saying you like a tv show because it’s popular. Have some independent thought!

I agree here. Apparently the male equivalent is 'Chad' or 'Kevin', but you don't memes about them at all. Yes, it it a way to shut down middle-aged women, which is very depressing.

I’m not saying that. You can like something that is popular, but at least be able to explain why you find it funny beyond “because it’s viral”

I never said that so please refrain from putting words in my mouth. My point is, it's a viral meme so clearly a lot of people find it funny. I'm one of the people who enjoy this meme. There are also many memes I don't find funny.

Okay fine, I'll entertain you with my thought process since you're clearly so interested. I hope you're sitting somewhere comfortable and maybe get yourself a snack Smile

I've worked in customer service and dealt with many Karens. I enjoy the meme because I recognise the Karen character as someone I had to deal with. The Karen characters were rude and unpleasant so it's nice to find some humour in something that was otherwise shitty.

It is not a personal vendetta against the name Karen. If someone has the name Karen, I don't try and perform an exorcism on them.

Not really, it's rather bland. I find the best ones come from Twitter but thank you for thinking of me xx
