To ask you to help me find this book

Not a TAAT but inspired by another thread up at the moment. I’m hoping the power of mumsnet can help me solve a mystery!

When I was a child (in the 80s) my brother had a book I absolutely loved and would now like to find for my DS, but I can’t for the life of me remember the title/author.

It was a book of children’s poems, hard back and A4 in size. I think the front cover had a sort of lilac border. Each poem had a gorgeous whole page illustration next to it (which is why I loved it) and the one poem I definitely remember being included was ‘Wynken, Blynken and Nod’ by Eugene Field (though I’m fairly sure the book wasn’t an anthology of his work). I think there was also a poem about sisters who went to sleep in a shell?!

Any ideas gratefully received!

We had one as children, a hardback one with a red cover which definitely had Wynken, Blynken and Nod in it . I think it might have been Hilda Boswell's Treasury of Poetry.

This is my Hilda Boswell (very well loved!!) and that isn't in it...

These poems are in a (very well loved and worn) book I have. I particularly loved The Sugarplum Tree. The book is called A Child’s Book Of Poems, with pictures by Gyo Fujikawa. The cover of mine doesn’t have a lilac border though.

@kittybee the poems are the right ones but the illustrations aren’t right unfortunately! The ones in the book I’m thinking of were more sort of soft, pastel-y pictures...I’m not describing that very well!

The Golden Treasury of Poetry

I think this is what you are thinking of. A lovely book & sadly out of print now & quite expensive second hand.

magimedi · 19/06/2020 08:16

@blackfriars

Bump! Would love to know if I've got it right!

blackfriars · 19/06/2020 09:23

Sadly not! Sorry - meant to respond - juggling a very cranky baby! The book I’m thinking of is more contemporary - the lilac border is on the outer sleeve, and the pages are more ‘slippery’ if you know what I mean - like a glossy page rather than the older style papery pages, which it looks like the book youve suggested has.

Thanks so much for responding though - it’s driving me mad!

Yes, the book I've suggested is old fashioned paper.

Sorry to hear about cranky baby - hopes/he settles soon.

This one has a lilac border, can't see what the illustrations are like or what other poems are in the book though.

@magimedi I have that book! Sadly when I was younger and knew no better I coloured in some of the line drawings with gel pens. It’s my favourite ever book of poems

magimedi · 19/06/2020 11:08

@Hippopotas

Was also my favourite book as a child & I read a lot of them to my DS, who is now an adult with a great love of poetry.
