to be mildly amused by people complaining about the colour of the new passport

Apparently it's not blue. Or at least, not the blue they remember.

www.express.co.uk/travel/articles/1296738/passport-uk-renewal-passports-brexit-blue-twitter-outrage

It never was really obviously blue, Just very very dark blue, almost black really.

And it's highly amusing that it's in the Daily Express. I am surprised this isn't the headline.

You can no more "self-identify" your nationality than you can grow a pair of testicles for the weekend

This made me laugh.

Fortunately I renewed my passport last year so still have an burgundy one with EU on it for the next 9 years.

ohoneohtwo · 17/06/2020 08:32

The Northern Ireland issue is much more interesting than the Scottish one though.

We dont know that their is an issue though.

gonesolo · 17/06/2020 08:36

It’s just a question of language. Your nationality is British if you hold one of these passports. United Kingdomish doesn’t exist.

If Scottish people really object to that then they need to vote to leave in the next Indy ref.

sekactao · 17/06/2020 08:40

At least Scotland is part of Great Britain. Northern Ireland is not

Great Britain does not include Northern Ireland. The less specific "Britain" does.

gonesolo · 17/06/2020 08:51

If you live in NI you can choose to be British or Irish.

chomalungma · 17/06/2020 08:54

@Ponoka7

I've deliberately waited to renew my passport so I'd have a different coloured one. I was a remainer. I have my GPs, Mum's and Dad's (none UK/Europe) old passports.

I'll wait and see. Just because people are complaining doesn't mean that they are Brexiters. This is an old rehashed story. But it was galling enough that the contract went to a french firm (even if ironic) it would be liberty taking on top, if the colour was wrong, as well.

It's not an old story - the passports are now being issued so people who were very excited about getting the new passports are a bit disappointed. Or OUTRAGED if you want to quote in the STYLE of the Daily Express

The sad irony is that we could have had blue passports while remaining in the EU. There's no colour requirement for EU members' passports.

ChangeThePassword · 17/06/2020 09:02

We dont know that their is an issue though

That's the bit you comment on 😂

Okay. The potential for there to be an issue with Northern Ireland is more interesting. That better?

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 17/06/2020 09:04

Dh and i got ours at the tail end of 2019

Ds1 got his in february/march

They are all burgundy...which ds1 was particularly pleased about

SallyOMalley · 17/06/2020 09:05

And I got Ds2's about 2 months ago and it too was burgundy

Same here. Submitted my form about a week before lockdown (biggest waste of money EVER). Received the passport in April/May and it's red.

The writing on the cover is a bit wonky, which is really going to piss me off for the next ten years.

ChangeThePassword · 17/06/2020 09:06

Your nationality is British if you hold one of these passports

Nope. Having a British passport does not change your nationality. Most people with British passports will be British, but there are many people that are not British that hold or are entitled to hold a British passport.

I'm not sure why you are laughing at that tbh?

Okay. The potential for there to be an issue with Northern Ireland is more interesting. That better

I don't really get why you have picked my comment re issues with NI our to ridicule?

There is no known issue at this point with NI passports so half the posts on the thread are irrelevant.

DestinationFkd · 17/06/2020 09:10

Does it matter as long as it does it's intended job.

ChangeThePassword · 17/06/2020 09:14

I found it funny because it is pretty clear that there is potential for there to be an issue with Northern Ireland and that would be much more problematic than any issues with Scotland. So what you were picking up on was just semantics.

I'm sorry that you thought I was ridiculing you. That rant wasn't how it was intended.

ChangeThePassword · 17/06/2020 09:14

Really, not rant.

Jaxhog · 17/06/2020 09:19

Who cares what colour it is? I don't understand why this really matters.

chomalungma · 17/06/2020 09:24

Some people who voted for Brexit were very excited to be getting the old style colour as one of the advantages of Brexit.

I care because every time now I have to see a blue passport I have to be reminded of the stupid fucking decision this country made by a tiny margin and I'm going to be embarrassed by it every time I have to show it to an official.
heartsonacake · 17/06/2020 09:32

I'm Scottish, I don't identify as British at all.

TheThingWithFeathers It doesn’t matter whether or not you identify as British, you are British. And no, that doesn’t stop you also being Scottish.

ChangeThePassword · 17/06/2020 09:33

Basically the new colour signifies we have a passport than is soon to be less useful than the one we had pre-brexit.

Lucky us.

Truthpact · 17/06/2020 09:43

Who the hell is so boring and has nothing else on in their lives that they care about the colour of their passport? Confused

If we're going to complain about something so irrelevant, we should at least ask for a colour that makes the damn things easier to find when they've clearly grown legs and wandered off from where I put them. Like a bright colour or something neon.

DappledThings · 17/06/2020 09:50

Who the hell is so boring and has nothing else on in their lives that they care about the colour of their passport?

Well it isn't something that consumes more than a tiny fraction of my mind but it will piss me off every time I see it when it is blue. It will be a reminder every time of Brexit and I can't see that not being something I see as really depressing for a long time.

ohoneohtwo · 17/06/2020 09:51

Not semantics at all. People were discussing the issues with NI and up until now, as far as I am aware, there are none.

Nothing to do with the Scottish/British conversation.

Truthpact · 17/06/2020 09:56

It will be a reminder every time of Brexit

I maybe wouldn't travel to anywhere in the rest of Europe then because when someone from there finds out you're British, they are probably going to start laughing. That will be a worse reminder than the colour of a passport.
