Apparently it's not blue. Or at least, not the blue they remember.

It never was really obviously blue, Just very very dark blue, almost black really.

And it's highly amusing that it's in the Daily Express. I am surprised this isn't the headline.

Oh dear. It’s almost like there are no benefits to leaving. Let’s hope the straight bananas are shiny.

MaleficentsCrow · 16/06/2020 22:53

I'm sure that's the colour they were originally a really dark ink blue almost black. I remember my grandparents original ones from many a year ago.

chomalungma · 16/06/2020 22:57

My passport from the 80s was very dark - on a previous thread, there was talk about them being either being very dark blue or black - but it's amusing to hear that people who are excited about the new passports being disappointed by the colour.

They’re really boring inside too. DD’s came up for renewal and I was looking for Great British Landmarks or something, but no. It looks like the passports from 20 years ago.

Just clicked through to see the colour. Why does it say "British passport" on the front? Why not just "United Kingdom of GB & NI" (sorry, couldn't be bothered to type that all out). I'm Scottish, I don't identify as British at all. I suppose I'll get into trouble if I put some sort of sticker over it... Sad

TheThingWithFeathers · 16/06/2020 23:02

Oh sorry, I see from the pics posted on the thread it does have the country name but they've changed "passport" to "British passport".

PhoneLock · 16/06/2020 23:07

It looks like the passports from 20 years ago.

In that picture, it look quite a bit different. I have one of my husbands old one in my hand. It has a hard cover and cut outs in the front with the number showing through. Same colour though.

Because it's a British passport?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 16/06/2020 23:35

@TheThingWithFeathers

I'm Scots and would never describe myself as 'British' either. It's just one in a multitude of minor annoyances and irritants that go hand-in-hand with being tied to this wretched union.

Fatted · 16/06/2020 23:41

@jimmyhill yes but it's not though is it. It's a passport for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I actually class myself as British. Scottish born, lived there for a decade, England for 20 years and Wales for a decade. Married Englishman kids born in England but they identify as Welsh, much to hubby's dismay.

Back to the topic, Brexiteers got it wrong then? Surely not? Hmm

sekactao · 17/06/2020 00:28

It's a passport for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Otherwise known as Britain.

"Britain usually refers to the United Kingdom, a sovereign state comprising the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands."

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britain

7ofNine · 17/06/2020 00:33

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland...
So UK citizens in NI will have different wording than "British Passport" then?

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 17/06/2020 00:35

Passports 20 years ago were red though ? I got mine in 1997/8 and it looks (iirc) like the blue one, but red. Not sure what the wording on it was though.

saveeno · 17/06/2020 00:38

The new passport shows we are on a path to freedom and greatness, gaining back control because well.... we are aren't we?

7ofNine · 17/06/2020 00:41

Hmm, saveeno, do you know the Talking Heads song?

saveeno · 17/06/2020 00:44

7ofNine,

Everyone in NI is entitled to Irish or British citizenship or both, far as I remember. Good Friday Agreement. So they are sorted WRT to intra EU travel, good on em.

saveeno · 17/06/2020 00:46

7, there are so many, perhaps you can give me a hint lol.

saveeno · 17/06/2020 00:47

Oh probably the Road to Nowhere at a guess. Sigh.

7ofNine · 17/06/2020 00:51

Sorry, was brushing my teeth!
Yes, road to nowhere.
Your "path to freedom" just made it pop into my head.

Anyway my point re NI was that really it should say "UK Passport", well, not that it really needs to have that on as it has the coat of arms on.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/06/2020 00:56

Why does it say "British passport" on the front?

Maybe because that's more comprehensible to the people you may need to show it to when abroad than the full designation below?

The new one looks less durable than the old black very dark blue ones but they were a bit too large.

(I'm going to be bit gutted when I have to replace my current passport, even though it's a bit upsetting to be reminded by it of lost European citizenship)

sekactao · 17/06/2020 01:18

Anyway my point re NI was that really it should say "UK Passport",

Why?

GirlCalledJames · 17/06/2020 03:31

Apparently the old ones got darker with age, so the colour varies and the colour people remember is not the colour they were when new.

Ponoka7 · 17/06/2020 03:43

I've deliberately waited to renew my passport so I'd have a different coloured one. I was a remainer. I have my GPs, Mum's and Dad's (none UK/Europe) old passports.

I'll wait and see. Just because people are complaining doesn't mean that they are Brexiters. This is an old rehashed story. But it was galling enough that the contract went to a french firm (even if ironic) it would be liberty taking on top, if the colour was wrong, as well.

MrsKypp · 17/06/2020 03:47

I couldn't care less what colour the passport is, as long as it isn't that shade of pink-orange because it makes me feel sick.
