To think we're headed back in time as far as home/work balance is concerned.

With the current rumblings about children not being back at school properly in September - and realistically for much longer unless something changes - AIBU to think that we are headed for a much more 1950's style man at work, little woman at home cooking, cleaning and child rearing family set up in the future.

Of course, when women* are forced to give up work to look after their children, there will be plenty of recently unemployed men ready and able to take up their positions, so work places will survive. And the idea that men don't need to take time off work for family matters will become even more cemented in our collective psyche as generally where there are two parents the mother will be at home.

I suspect this will also increase negative views on single parents as they will have very few choices compared to anyone in a couple and will be damned if they work (won't someone think of the children) and damned if they don't (scroungers).

All of this no doubt prettied up as a return to 'family values' despite being much much worse for women than men.

*and yes I know some women earn more than men and that some men will end up at home but those are very much outside the norm for our society as a whole.

Possibly. Let's see what happens in the next few months. If infection rates are low hopefully schools could go back ft and clubs start again. It's a bit early to know.
