Woke up an hour before my alarm, my tongue is burning and my throat aches but worse of all, I am so, so nauseous ... I keep balking ... not actually been sick yet though, feel altogether shite.

No idea what it could be? I’m not normally Ill ... no chance of pregnancy 🤮 supposed to be at work today, without actual vomiting would it be unreasonable to call in sick? I feel like like I have the hangover from hell.

If it's not detected, you don't have it. If the sample is contaminated, you're asked to take another test.

They reckon that up to 30% of self-administered tests are incorrectly carried out, and therefore may have given false negatives.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 16/06/2020 09:21

presenteeism is a major bugbear of mine.
i can just hear my colleagues moaning! let alone my manager, although to be fair, she might just be sighing as time off means extra work for her, form filling etc.,!

Yousureaboutthat · 16/06/2020 09:23

OP I hope you feel better soon. I echo other posters in saying don't go to work. It could well be Covid-19, but even if it's not, you don't sound well enough and could pass it on to others.
If you're in England people you work with who have been shielding may be returning to work now. Any infection could be devastating to them, and after being cooped up for weeks, they're likely to be far more susceptible to illness.
Don't go to work until your better, it would be very selfish to do so. Get another test too, a negative test doesn't mean you'll never catch Covid-19

teraculum29 · 16/06/2020 09:23

if it's stomach trouble, try a peppermint tea (if you have at home) or black tea (no sugar and no milk) and see if that helps.
but do not go to work, even if its just a sick bug and no covid.

mrpumblechook · 16/06/2020 09:26

*So why do I have a cough and swollen glands? And why has my grandson had croup?

I don't know how he could have croup if he has been isolating. Presumably he hasn't been in contact with children from other families.
As for your cough and swollen glands, it can be caused by hayfever or loads of non infectious causes. You also could have COVID.

rosinavera · 16/06/2020 09:28

@Supersimkin2

It sounds nothing like Covid. No high fever or cough.

Just a bug, love, they're still around.

Kate Garraway's husband had none of the classic symptoms.
StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 16/06/2020 09:29

Just to add in the mix, I get nausea and stretching when I have a sore throat, I guess if things are swollen it triggers my gag reflex.

Ordinarily I'd go to work with those symptoms but in current climate I definitely wouldn't. Depending on where you are you may be able to get a test today

FranCan · 16/06/2020 09:30

yes definitly reasonable to call in sick! i hate this sick-mongering culture where work tries to make us feel so bad for not feeling well. Feel like you shouldn't have to give a detailed reason - just say you are not well should be enough

okiedokieme · 16/06/2020 09:33

@aurynne

The timings on the New Zealand cases mean they could have easily caught it on one of the 3 planes or at 2 interchange airports. Nobody can tell but I wouldn't want to interchange in the Middle East at present!

PrincessBuggerPants · 16/06/2020 09:40

@RafaIsTheKingOfClay "There is something going round that looks pretty similar. It’s been going round all winter."

How the hell do you know? This sheer arrogance and ignorance is part of the problem.

annabel85 · 16/06/2020 09:42

@Twinklelittlestar1

I lived and worked in England for years and suffered through countless viruses that I picked up from the office because people were pressured into working when they were sick as dogs. People stumbling around sneezing and coughing were hailed as heroic. People who took sick days were talked about behind their back

So so depressingly true and it's only lately I've begun to acknowledge the ridiculousness of this. Perhaps it's one of the contributing factors as to why our cases are so high

Literally a week before lockdown I came down with what was essentially a really bad cold and ended up feeling crap for 3 weeks. I phoned up my manager on the first morning who told me to stay off because the policy had literally just change to not coming in if you were unwell at all. This after years of hitting triggers and getting warnings if you were off 3 times or 6 days in a year.

Ordinarily i'd have gone in for the entire 3 weeks and maybe used up a couple of days annual or flexi days. It's a stupid culture and it is how it spreads so fast here. In the months before lockdown I couldn't get on a train without people coughing all over the carriage during my commute.

ballsdeep · 16/06/2020 09:45

FFS this is why well never get back to normal! How many times do people need to be told? If you have synptoms- isolate. Not go in to pissing work

Tianalia · 16/06/2020 09:45

I had something similar to this last week. It wasn't covid.

eggsandwich · 16/06/2020 09:51

I felt similar recently though it had been coming on gradually, wasn’t and haven’t been sleeping well for a very long time! feeling very tired all the time though more so recently, a cough that I couldn’t get rid of which was the same this time last year and I believe the year before that, throat was sore and the worst was the phlegm at the back of my throat that wouldn’t shift no matter what I did ever being sick didn’t help.

Spoke to my doctor and he said it sounds like bad hay fever so prescribed me some tablets and nasal pump and once they kicked in I slept for 12 hours straight the first night, I’m now day 6 and I honestly feel like a new woman, sleeping so much better and more energy.

I must of had hay fever for a few years and not realised it, didn’t get any if the classic symptoms either.

Cam2020 · 16/06/2020 10:06

There is something going round that looks pretty similar. It’s been going round all winter.

Lots of viruses look similar. That's why it's impossible to tell whether it's just a virus or the virus and its important to stay home!

I completely agree with the posters commenting on our culture of working whilst sick. It's been seen as a sign of weakness or a lack of commitment to the job for far too long. I have been completely tied up in this culture too, I would never contemplate taking a day off sick unless I physically could not get into the office, then spend that day worrying and feeling guilty rather than recuperating. The silly thing is, so many people are capable of working from home. Hopefully people will be a little more mindful and respectful of their own and others health now and attitudes will change.

backseatcookers · 16/06/2020 10:07

Temperature, sore throat and losing sense of smell... why didn't you self isolate?

I'm sorry you feel ill but don't be so selfish!

Our in laws had self administered tests at one of the drive through testing centres due to symptoms and the testers said that 20-30% of people could get false negatives as the test is so hard to self administer. Just for those doubting it - it really is the case.

Please isolate OP, it's not fair to risk other people's help - they could see vulnerable people they know especially now some restrictions have lifted and they may be able to finally help older relatives a bit again.

It's been so clear what the rules are if you have symptoms, this isn't rocket science.

rc22 · 16/06/2020 10:14

It sounds really similar to the pattern my covid took. I had a day long blinding migraine like headache so booked a test for the following day. Woke up to go and have my test and felt absolutely right as rain and was convinced I was wasting a test. However the following day other symptoms like a sore throat and nausea started and i got a positive result.

Nearlyalmost50 · 16/06/2020 10:19

I also want to echo that testing once negative does not mean you didn't have corona, or that you don't have it now.

The tests have to be done in a very specific way, and at a specific time, and this leaves a lot of room for error, up to 30% of tests are wrong basically.

Also, you could have got it a few days ago.

Loss of smell is not totally unheard of but is more unusual for other viruses, and it's very distinctive for corona, so staying at home, and retesting is going to be the way forward.

SoupDragon · 16/06/2020 10:25

It's unlikely that other bugs are going around at the moment

Yeah, because Covid has seen them all off like a wild animal protecting its territory.🙄

MyLittleFishDontCry · 16/06/2020 10:31

@SquishyBones

I do have bad hay fever.

On Saturday I had a migraine that I just couldn’t shift. Felt ok on Sunday. Yesterday felt really hot and had stabbing pains in my throat (not a sore throat, a painful stabbing throat). Today feel absolutely shocking. Feel like I could throw up at any minute. Muzzy head but not a headache ...

No coughing (well I do have a hay fever cough but it’s no worse than it normally is). Lost sense of smell a few weeks ago but it’s back to normal now. Tongue looks ok but feels sore as though it’s being burnt.

Stabbing pains in throat is a symptom reported by many with CV.
SirVixofVixHall · 16/06/2020 10:46

It does sound like it may well be CV. I agree with pps, get another test, and I hope you recover quickly. Flowers

IdblowJonSnow · 16/06/2020 10:48

I didnt think anyone was allowed to fly into NZ at the moment? Other than possibly Australians?

megletthesecond · 16/06/2020 10:54

It was for a funeral apparently jonsnow.

Presenteeism does my fucking head in. I had to work with colleagues coughing at the starting of March. I can cope with added work pressure if people are off sick. I can't cope with being ill as a LP.

Lovemusic33 · 16/06/2020 11:06

Wether it’s covid or not I would not go to work with those symptoms as what ever you have is likely to be contagious, stay at home until you are better (longer if you test positive for covid).
