To have my whole day ruined by some idiot?!

I was waiting for dh to pick me up outside my local shopping centre this morning and almost got into fisticuffs!

There was an elderly gentleman and his very elderly dw waiting in a car for one of the inconsiderate people who had parked their car in the handicap spot to return. His dw had an oxygen tube and many orange handicap stickers on the car. I smiled and he told me that sometimes he has to wait an hour for these people to move their cars and that he is used to it by now. It is the only handicap bay near where they need to shop and he cannot park anywhere else because she cannot walk very far.
I found this incredible!!
Cue obnoxious woman in SUV. A spot came available near the HC bay, but was not HC. The old man saw the car pulling out and slowly pulled up to go in the space. Horrible woman in SUV sped over to beat him to it and started shouting and honking at the poor guy. He got a bit rattled and eventually just pulled out (probably in fear for his life, she was ranting like a mad cow!)

I saw all of this and walked over to this woman and told her that they were HC and she probably should have let them have the spot as they had been waiting 20 minutes for a HC spot to be available. She then started on me saying how was she to know they were HC, I said the orange HC stickers and parking permit...oh and the elderly woman with the oxygen tube!!!!

She was really defensive and shouting, which is what tipped me off that deep down she knew she was wrong.

She eventually just walked towards the shop doors ( again!!) and told me to argue with someone else! I just shouted at her to have a nice day.

It really has ruined my day that people act this way. I really think they deserved more respect than that! Ughhh, people sometimes. All I know is that I am rasing my dc to be good people so that 30 years from now that b*tch wont be in the same position.

Disgusting!! I am off for a coffee (and maybe a biscuit!) to make me feel better. Sorry for the rant.

i feel the same when we go shopping and people who are clearly able bodied with no hc sticker in car are parked in hc bay

the same when youi have people parked in child spot with no children my nan has blue badge for hc and has to wait along time sometimes as people still do not grasp the fact that they shouldn't park in that spot

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 24/09/2007 13:16

i know, the world is full of angry, mad, selfish people.
Karma will gets its own back eventually.

Good for you for speaking up on behalf of the elderly couple.

curiouscat · 24/09/2007 13:24

You did the right thing. Don't let this nasty SUV driver put you off speaking up again next time it happens. Because you know it will!

Having said that, my dh got told off by another man for parking his sports car in a parent's parking space. Cue extracting sleeping baby from rear seat and smug exit for dh

MaryAnnSingleton · 24/09/2007 13:29

grrr - the bitch - don't worry - definitely agree with karma !

Bouncingturtle · 24/09/2007 13:34

yep you are bloody right, horrid woman! Well done! Makes me so when people do that - my PILs are disabled, both have limited mobility, and they have smiliar issues with having to wait for a disabled space!
Forget her, you have the moral high ground. Treat yourself to a cookie

WotsZePoint · 24/09/2007 13:36

Bloody crime when that happens. I x HC space is rubbish. The local shopping centre should do something about it.
Did he get a space in the end?

missyhissey · 24/09/2007 13:44

You did well to stick up for them, if it'd have been me I would probably have muttered at her under my breath but not had the nerve to say anything!

sugarmatches · 24/09/2007 13:53

No they did not have a spot by the time we left. I called the centre when I got home, but they wanted nothing to do with it! How hard would it be to put a few more HC bays in or maybe have a traffic warden passing out tickets?
Name and shame, I say...
BRENT CROSS SHOPPING CENTRE

Ooooh I b*ggered that right up

At times like that I long for the ability to kill or maim by telepathy.

I would have waited til the woman went into the shopping centre and then put a huge notice under her wipers where everyone could see it saying 'this driver forced her way into thsi space while a disabled person was waiting for it. She is a disgrace'

maisym · 24/09/2007 14:03

some people just don't care. you did your best - the elderly couple must have been grateful for your help.

Ripeberry · 24/09/2007 14:12

Good on you for standing up for the elderly couple!
Hope that evil SUV woman was shaking with shock later and maybe she may not try that again in case someone else does the same.
My mum years ago used to look at everycar parked in dissabled spaces and if she did not see a badge displayed, she would get out her bright red lipstick and write on their window.
"Selfish person"
P.S if i was you, i would have let her tyre down.

bookwormtailmum · 24/09/2007 14:16

Congrats for standing up to the driver of the SUV - maybe she'll think twice before she tries that stunt again.

Blandmum · 24/09/2007 14:17

Dh has a disabled blue card due to the cancer.

We go up for him to have chemotherapy once a week, 3 weeks out of 4.

It is hard to believe but people park in the disabled parking areas without having a car at the hospital!

Hard to belive how selfishly stupid some people can be

Good for you sb, hope you enjoyed the biscuit!

minorityrules · 24/09/2007 14:19

Sorry but something strange here

Brent cross has more than one disabled parking space, we don't have 'handicapped' parking spaces in this country, nor do we have orange stickers or badges

all seems a bit odd

majorstress · 24/09/2007 14:21

why does the shopping centre get off scot free

lets boycott that place

sugarmatches · 24/09/2007 14:26

Minority...are you suggesting I made this up???
umm, okay.

There are only a few parking bays in the Fenwicks parking lot, which is where they were going to shop/have lunch. They could not park in the multi-story as it was too far for her to walk. Sorry for the wording, I say HC spot but it is actually a disabled parking space (everyone knew what I meant though!!!!)

And they did indeed have orange sticker with the disabled symbol as well as another on the dash along with a little timer type thing.

There is always one...I give up!!!

OP posts:
wolveschick · 24/09/2007 14:32

well done for getting involved. if more people did then maybe those horrid people wouldnt do it again

lionheart · 24/09/2007 14:35

No, good for you sugar, for intervening. She might have brazened it out this time to save face but

perhaps she'll think twice the next.

TheDuchess · 24/09/2007 14:35

but aren't disabled badges blue?

hifi · 24/09/2007 14:36

the offensive woman is probably feeling really bad now, was probably very embarassed at the time, couldnt you have least superglued her locks?

Blandmum · 24/09/2007 14:38

The old disabled parking stickers were orange.

Some of the disabled parking slots at the hospital are still shown via an orange badge sign rather than the blue badge signs

sugarmatches · 24/09/2007 14:41

Dh told me they used to be orange, so maybe they felt it was unneccessary to peel the stickers off the windows of the car simply because the badge that goes on the dash was changed to blue. The new badges are blue...the stickers on the windows were orange.
This is going off the topic a bit.

This is a true story. Sorry if I seem defensive about this, but I did warn everyone in my title.

OP posts:
sugarmatches · 24/09/2007 14:44

I just really felt like the shopping centre should do something from preventing these things from happening.
Maybe a sign saying "Please be a nice person when parking here!"

They were just a really nice old couple.

Blandmum · 24/09/2007 14:44

I think that law changed in 2002, and the blue cards are now unified across the EC

There are also differences as to what information is on the back of the card
