To travel to UK from Ireland

My friend wants to go over to UK to mind her grandson. Does anyone know anyone who’s done this. She’s checked with the UK port police who said check with customs but she isn’t able to get hold of them. She wants to drive over, her dd is a key worker so she presumes this would be essential travel? The thing she’s worried about is whether she’d be able to proceed from the U.K. port. She’d be so grateful if anyone could advise her. There doesnt seem to be any hard and fast rule as to what is essential travel.

Im sorry I don't know about ferry ports but I do know several people who flew to the UK from Ireland recently with no questions asked Hmm
Flights and ferries between the two islands never stopped during lockdown. I'm not 100% sure but I'm guessing she may be fine...

We can now travel around England and stay overnight with one other person. She is travelling for support reasons, so could have done this much sooner.

She will need to travel on the ferry wearing a mask.

My neice travelled over to buy a car. Irresponsible as it was she had no problems she flew over and got the ferry back.

Thank you everyone, these posts have reassured her.

Yep you will be able to travel no problem. I am Irish but live in the UK and have gone back and forth.

I want to know the answer to this too,
I can't find anything written down except non essential travel is not advised.

LellyMcKelly · 15/06/2020 15:39

Ferries are going back and forth as normal, just with social distancing measures in place.

Carriemac · 15/06/2020 17:47

It's unrestricted as common travel area

Travel between Ireland and UK has not been restricted
