About lockdown weight gain

So I was talking to a friend on Zoom and she told me that she has gained a stone and a half during lockdown. I was shocked when I then spoke to other friends and heard the same thing and that I am one of the only ones I know who hasn’t gained weight and used lockdown as an excuse to eat what I like. I am worried about the NHS burden as there are so many patients who have had their treatment delayed due to Covid and the last thing we need is more health issues caused by obesity.
AIBU to think that people should be more responsible? Btw before anyone flames me I am not talking about people who have had a very stressful job during lockdown. My friend said her DH has discovered a love for baking so she has just been sitting there eating bread and butter for 2 months.

Oh do fuck off you GF - Christ with friends like you who needs enemies?!

Mrsjayy · 15/06/2020 12:13

I don't own scales I grew up with a disordered eating parent anyways the only way I gauge weight gain is by my trousers which are a tighter than usual people are moving less stuck indoors some nice food is cheering us up.

Ardnassa · 15/06/2020 12:18

I haven’t put on any weight but I can see why people have and hell, we’re all going through a lot of strain atm and if people find the best way to cope with it is a bit more cheese then power to their elbow.

It certainly doesn’t irritate me nor does my lack of weight gain (in fact, I have lost around an inch off my waist and hips because have been exercising more) make me feel superior. My way of coping has been to have a little cry most evenings and be super-irritable. Probably just as bad for my health as a tiny bit of weight gain, if not more so!

1WildTeaParty · 15/06/2020 12:20

Come down from up there and have a slice of something cheering OP.

You sound very stressed (on other's behalf?) for a sunny monday morning.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 15/06/2020 12:20

You've annoyed us.
Go and eat a leaf.

Love that.Grin

Dhalandchips · 15/06/2020 12:21

Oh how I wish I were you Op. I'll just carry on being shit me though. Hmm

Juliet2014 · 15/06/2020 12:23

*Hope it doesn’t make you put on weight, so you can continue to be a superior being.

Presume you’ve gained weight during lockdown and very sensitive about it?

It’s ridiculous that someone can’t start at a thread about discussing an issue very relevant to coved, health and NHS without the first poster taking offence.

OP I have not gained (needed to as underweight but not critical as only really recovery from awful bout of food poisoning). Eaten very healthily and worked out (amazing gym sign up, best £25 month I think I have ever spent) daily.

I can’t relate to those who have gained. Of all the times to. No doubt many were avoiding scathing of anyone remotely breaking lockdown and yet they themselves were putting themselves at additional risk by stuffing their faces.

jeffgoldblumlovespenguins · 15/06/2020 12:23

Now let's be fair , it's not really the food, some of us have been drinking like fish !!
(I know I have)
Alcohol contains a lot of calories 😄

Fatted · 15/06/2020 12:23

What strain exactly do you think the NHS is going to be under with all these extra fatties we now have OP? They won't be able to get an appointment to be seen anytime soon, the NHS is closed unless you have Covid 19, and even then they won't see you until you are about to die. So the fatties will all die under the weight of all the pies and cakes and bread and booze and the NHS will be saved. Hurrah!!

Juliet2014 · 15/06/2020 12:24

I also wonder how many were already overweight ore covid and were then shielding or vulnerable due to a condition caused by or increased likelihood and security due to obesity.

Mrsjayy · 15/06/2020 12:26

Well yes I might have partook in some midweek wine ok its Wine bloat I have BlushGrin

SomewhereInbetween1 · 15/06/2020 12:26

Probably not hungry because you're too full of yourself.

BrevilleTron · 15/06/2020 12:26

I've put on weight. Because my job is an 8hr workout of manual labour. And I'm on furlough. So yes little miss judgy pants I HAVE put on weight, however I have now taken control of it and changed our diet.

jeffgoldblumlovespenguins · 15/06/2020 12:26

@Mrsjayy 🤣 👍

Mrsjayy · 15/06/2020 12:27

The NHS isn't closed in my area I've had to video appointments and I have an MRI first week in July.

Alittleshortforaspacepooper · 15/06/2020 12:28

Good grief, what a wanky post.

OP, I got pregnant during lock down and have gained about a stone so far! I hope that you still manage to sleep tonight knowing that my arse is growing ever larger by the day.

NameChange84 · 15/06/2020 12:30

@Juliet2014

I don’t know anyone, including myself and 3 family members, who are in the Shielding category and obese. I’ve put on weight but I’m by no means obese. My father is shielding and is 10 stone. The fattest woman I know who is in the Shielding category is a size 12.

So we aren’t Shielding due to obesity. Off the top of my head; heart conditions, genetic condition, COPD, Bronchiolosis, Stroke and Diabetes and a mix of several of these conditions in one person.

FinlandFlag · 15/06/2020 12:30

Christ some of you need to watch the Resilience documentary. It's on TV on Tuesday. Think about the link between mental health and obesity.

People need help and support not the be called fucking fatties.

m0therofdragons · 15/06/2020 12:31

I didn’t eat much at all the first 2 weeks. I was so worried about dc and my role in nhs, then the exhaustion set in and I’m eating constantly. I also saved my once a day exercise to take dc out so stopped running. Now it’s relaxed I’m back to running 3 times a week but I’ve put on 10lbs. Dh is enjoying my boobs as part of my covid curves.

SkylinesTurnstiles · 15/06/2020 12:32

@Alittleshortforaspacepooper
Glad I’m not the only one! 😂

MilerVino · 15/06/2020 12:35

I recently gained 4lbs. I still only have a BMI of 21 but I don't like the upward trajectory. I've cut out chocolate, crisps and alcohol and started running more. The weight is coming off. I'll gradually re-introduce the alcohol etc but in moderation and I'll keep up the running.

And yes, you are being incredibly goady and disingenuous OP. There are plenty of threads like this on here. It's easy to see how they go. I can do something about my (minimal) weight gain fairly easily. But I don't know other people's situations. I do know that me being judgemental is unlikely to make them suddenly think 'oh I know, best lose weight right away'. It's more likely to make them miserable and want to eat more.

Yes, I worry about obesity and I worry about the NHS. But I think we need societal changes to make it easier for people to be active and we need to find ways to make healthy foods more readily available and unhealthy foods less prevalent. I can't see judging individuals as being helpful.

Juliet2014 · 15/06/2020 12:35

* So we aren’t Shielding due to obesity. *

Not what I said.

I said I wondered how many were shielding due to a condition caused by obesity OR made more likely / more serious due to obesity

Diabetes for example. Stroke another.

Juliet2014 · 15/06/2020 12:36

* People need help and support not the be called fucking fatties.*

Who? Who has called overweight people on this thread that?

astuz · 15/06/2020 12:39

My weight is very stable normally, but even I went from 8st 12 to 9 st 5 (5'3"), before I realised, and I've now cut back BUT it's my appetite that has gone through the roof during lockdown! I normally just eat when I feel really hungry, stop eating as soon as I start to feel full. I've been doing this all through lockdown as well, but it turns out that I've been overeating because of my appetite! Since I've cut back, to try to get back to my normal weight, I have been absolutely STARVING all the time - it's horrendous. No idea why lock down has caused this, but it's truly awful to feel starving all the time, and I have total sympathy for anyone who chooses to just carry on eating and not starve themselves.

To be fair, I think i can see your point OP, in that loads of diseases are linked to obesity, even COVID, so it is a worry if lots of people are putting weight on, but I can't see what any one individual can do about it other than starving themselves, like I feel like I'm doing (even though I'm not really, it's just my appetite), but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

Juliet2014 · 15/06/2020 12:41

* so it is a worry if lots of people are putting weight on, but I can't see what any one individual can do about it other than starving themselve*

Seriously? You see “starving yourself” as the only solution to weight loss!
