About lockdown weight gain

So I was talking to a friend on Zoom and she told me that she has gained a stone and a half during lockdown. I was shocked when I then spoke to other friends and heard the same thing and that I am one of the only ones I know who hasn’t gained weight and used lockdown as an excuse to eat what I like. I am worried about the NHS burden as there are so many patients who have had their treatment delayed due to Covid and the last thing we need is more health issues caused by obesity.
AIBU to think that people should be more responsible? Btw before anyone flames me I am not talking about people who have had a very stressful job during lockdown. My friend said her DH has discovered a love for baking so she has just been sitting there eating bread and butter for 2 months.

It must be one of the Reddit posters who love to talk about their goady posts on MN Hmm

ZaraW · 15/06/2020 11:21

Most of us should have taken more responsibility ... but sometimes life is not that easy.

Lol most of us are carrying a bit of extra weight it's not a big deal.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 15/06/2020 11:22

Is that you Gymgirl? Hmm

lachy · 15/06/2020 11:22

Call yourself a friend? Hmm, I'm so glad my friends are all like me, we've all put on weight, but you know what? Not one of us could care less at the moment.

I'm glad you haven't used lockdown as an excuse to eat what you like. I've used it as an excuse to do just that. I've baked and cooked to my hearts content, and made some delicious dishes which I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing with my family.

SpokeTooSoon · 15/06/2020 11:28

I have certainly gained weight. Some time in May I weighed myself and was horrified to see I was up 10lb. I’d been in complete denial about it and wearing stretchy clothes to kid myself. Stopped weighing myself in April because I could see the pounds going on and felt powerless to stop it.

I reckon I must be a full stone up now. That’s a bit over 10st instead of a bit over 9st and I’m 5t 6. Hardly a porker. It’s thoroughly depressingly nonetheless. Usually I’d knock it on the head with a quick harsh diet and loads of exercise. This time I fear I’ve accepted it and given up!!!! Life is just so dull and I’m hardly seeing anyone socially so there’s no incentive to fit into a dress for an event or anything. That’s the main problem I reckon.

Anyway, stop judging people OP. You’re a fat-shamer and terribly pleased with yourself. You don’t give a toss about the NHS, just about knocking people when they’re down.

Toothsil · 15/06/2020 11:29

Goady fucker. Good for you that you're so perfect. Hope you don't fall off that high horse and hurt yourself when you clearly don't have any padding to protect you.

Eckhart · 15/06/2020 11:32

I would also judge those who binge-drink during lockdown as that’s just as unhealthy

I judge that your ego is overweight, which is the most damaging kind of overweight there is. But luckily, it's mostly damaging to you.

TomPettysTopHat · 15/06/2020 11:36

I'm glad you're not my friend.

I've put on nearly a stone. My marriage is imploding though and I work for the NHS. Do I get let off? Hmm

LellyMcKelly · 15/06/2020 11:39

I’m more worried about the NHS having to cope with those suffering from anxiety disorders about other people’s weight.

suggestionsplease1 · 15/06/2020 11:42

I think it's a concern more broadly yes. It's another knock-on consequence to lockdown that I imagine hasn't been fully factored into the models of how lives will be impacted for years to come.

If enough of the population has gained weight that will of course, at a population level, increase overall likelihoods of developing diseases, their severity, and the ease with which they are recovered from in years to come, and it's the NHS that will have to manage that.

Ohdearfindingthisboringnow · 15/06/2020 11:43

Well done you - pat on the back for being so wonderful.

Naughty step for those of us that have gained weight and not being as responsible as you.

I'd hate to be your 'friend' - judgemental

Isthisfinallyit · 15/06/2020 11:44

Well I've only gained 4 pounds but that's because I'm pregnant and have felt nauseous. I feel fine today so plan on baking a large boston cream pie and eating it Grin (well not all of it but a good big slice or two at least).

I think that my lack of exercise these past months has made me more mushy though. I don't like walking or running and there's not a lot that is fun to cycle to that I haven't done too many times already. I guess that that hoes for many people.

Sonichu · 15/06/2020 11:46

eurochick · 15/06/2020 11:47

I'm working harder than ever (two 15+ hour days in the past week alone) and until two weeks ago was also managing home schooling a five year old some of the time. Some days I just don't have time to leave the house. It's not good for my physical or mental well-being but these are unusual times. I'm usually pretty active in my day to day life, racking up over 10000 steps on a standard work day. That's all gone. I've put on half a stone, which is a lot for me as my weight is generally pretty stable. But the OP will be glad to know that I am still within healthy him and as soon as work ramps back I will be able to be a bit more active. Thank goodness I have the OP to police me!

Ohdearfindingthisboringnow · 15/06/2020 11:47

Well LeanandMean31 you win goady post of the day.

I noticed that you namedchanged so obviously realise a bit somewhere deep that either you views are judgemental and bitchy or that perhaps you are being unkind to others and didn't want to keep your usual name when you want to do that....!

FabulouslyElegantTits · 15/06/2020 11:50

YABa twatU

CorianderLord · 15/06/2020 11:52

It's not from eating whatever they want it's probably because no one is going anywhere or doing anything so their calorie base line is lower and they haven't adjusted

BigBoosh · 15/06/2020 11:54

Something very unseemly about rapid weight gain. Lazy and glutonous.

almalm · 15/06/2020 12:04

Goady post.
I've actually lost nearly a stone in lockdown. Now I know where the extra weight was coming from - I was always out and about so much I'd be constantly grabbing a sandwich or a pasta salad from the supermarket and a McDs once a week. I've not changed my diet at home at all but the weight has dropped off because my meals at home were always healthy. Going to try to find a way to solve the eating-on-the-go problem once things get back to normal.

But I can absolutely understand why others might have put weight on. It's a horrible time for everyone and a lot of people are seeking comfort or trying to at least make the lockdown more pleasant. If that's by doing loads of baking or eating extra chocolate then they should do that to help them get through this time. Mental health is going to be a way bigger problem than the fact quite a lot of people have put a stone on in lockdown. If some people can keep their mental health stable by baking and cooking and eating, then they should get on with it without being judged by goady fuckers coming on here saying people are irresponsible.

If you have put weight on, don't let this thread upset you.

Sonichu · 15/06/2020 12:05

"glutonous"

There's something very unseemly about the way you spell "gluttonous" too.

Mrsjayy · 15/06/2020 12:05

Yes I'm lazy and greedy God forbid anybody who likes a bit or 2 of bread and a glass of wine whilst we are stuck in the middle of the biggest crisis of our lifetime!

Thelnebriati · 15/06/2020 12:06

I haven't gained any weight but I know I've lost muscle, so I must also have lost muscle tone. Its nothing to crow about.

Nsky · 15/06/2020 12:07

Without all the judgemental comments, most are doing less excercise, well for me fact, about 4 lbs for me, be easier when back at work.
Face facts

Megatron · 15/06/2020 12:09

Ah come on OP, don't be disingenuous, your post was deliberately goady. At least admit it.

FinlandFlag · 15/06/2020 12:11

I'm a binge eater. Former anorexic, then bulimic now I binge eat with periods of resteuction.

BMI around 27 so overweight but I fluctuate between 25-27 a lot and will get it down hopefully within a month.

It was up at 29 a few weeks ago and have massively overhauled food availability to try and help with cutting binges.

(I have lost over 7 stone since my binge eating was at it's worst a few years back)

I have a long term problem and it has been exacerbated by lockdown. I think that is the same for many people who secretly eat/binge eat.

I do agree with you to some extent op in that I worry people use food as a crutch at the moment and that they will then be less healthy if catch covid. (Same as smokers, binge drinkers or alcoholics - anything that puts extra strain on the body)

It makes sense everything else has gone to shit but food is reliable, stable, familiar and comforting.
