About lockdown weight gain

Leanandmean31 · 15/06/2020 09:43

So I was talking to a friend on Zoom and she told me that she has gained a stone and a half during lockdown. I was shocked when I then spoke to other friends and heard the same thing and that I am one of the only ones I know who hasn’t gained weight and used lockdown as an excuse to eat what I like. I am worried about the NHS burden as there are so many patients who have had their treatment delayed due to Covid and the last thing we need is more health issues caused by obesity.
AIBU to think that people should be more responsible? Btw before anyone flames me I am not talking about people who have had a very stressful job during lockdown. My friend said her DH has discovered a love for baking so she has just been sitting there eating bread and butter for 2 months.

A BMI of 25 is pretty much the definition of being "a tad overweight" as a BMI of 24.9 is with the healthy range.*

What I mean is look at how much you actually need to reach a BMI of 25, it's a lot. They need to cut off somewhere, but a BMI of 24.9 is really high, unless you are really athletic and pure muscles and no fat. It's pretty obvious when you are...

No, the reason is the same for everyone: Eating more calories than they need.

Thank you captain Obvious. It is so easy to cut your calorie intake suddenly in half because you are no longer active during a lockdown Hmm

@NikeDeLaSwoosh

People have many different reasons for putting on quarantine weight

No, the reason is the same for everyone: Eating more calories than they need.

We need to stop distancing ourselves from the consequences of our actions. Each person has full responsibility for every morsel they eat.

The only person who has any control over what goes in their mouths is the individual themselves.

I know this is difficult to hear, but it is the truth - this pandemic would have been far less serious had we heeded the warnings about the dangers of obesity.

Or we're a nation of alcoholics

I've gained a stone from lockdown. Managed to lose 4lb of it so far and I've just found out I'm pregnant - 10lb heavier than my last pregnancy.

I developed a love for baking too, it was that or struggle even more with my mental health

Thats not true, I'm eating a subsistence level of calories. I'm not losing weight because I'm not getting enough exercise.

Malbecblooms · 15/06/2020 19:21

Do you have statistics for that last comment? When you say “far less serious” what sort of numbers are you talking? I read the majority of deaths were among frail elderly people

A lot of the elderly are frail because of poor nutrition and lack of exercise. Therefore yes it is a similar problem.

You're not losing weight because you are eating to your TDEE.

If you wish to continue to lose weight, you need to create a deficit between your TDEE and your calorie intake.

NikeDeLaSwoosh · 15/06/2020 19:32

I read the majority of deaths were among frail elderly people

70-80% of people in ICU beds are either overweight or obese.

People can be elderly and obese.

Going to the gym on weekdays was my daily routine, as well as getting in 10k steps which included school runs and errands to town etc. Obviously during lockdown, those things aren’t happening, and I have hardly a moment to myself to achieve any kind of decent aerobic exercise. (Please spare me telling me that I can do Joe Wicks or whatever in the front room, it is not the same nor is it as easy to achieve in a small space as what I do at the gym)

Couple that with putting on weight at Easter because of baking and chocolate, and I literally haven’t managed to shift any of it.

So yes, at the moment, I’m not quite a stone up on what I was at the start of lockdown, but I hardly think the NHS is going to buckle under the weight of me. It’s no different to what can happen over Christmas, tbh, and it’ll come off again once I have more than 5 minutes to myself and the gym opens again (or I finally break down and buy a cross trainer for home, but I’d much rather use the gym)

Lily193 · 15/06/2020 19:52

NikeDeLaSwoosh Unsurprisingly, that paper states 'In multivariable logistic regression adjusted for age and sex' and 'However, this cross-sectional study did not capture other possible confounding factors..' I notice you ignored my earlier question about this.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 15/06/2020 19:56

ODFOD. Here in Spain I couldn’t legally leave the house for 60 days. I’ve not done too badly as it happens, but I don’t feel any need to come on here and post a nasty snide post.

Being thin does not make you morally superior, but this post makes you a mean girl. Some people are struggling enough without you popping your comments on. Behave.

The biggest success in this unique time is keeping as cheerful as possible, looking after those who depend on you, keeping things ticking over and reaching out to those who need support. Have you done any of those things?

NikeDeLaSwoosh · 15/06/2020 19:59

So @Lily193 are you really trying to argue that obesity has literally nothing to do with the prevalence of serious illness following Covid infection?

There are always confounds in any data set - they don't automatically negate the findings.

Something in your tone tells me that you're not the type to understand nuance though.

Oh fuck off!

Lily193 · 15/06/2020 20:02

NikeDeLaSwoosh I'm a doctor so I think I have a pretty good understanding of potential confounding factors in relation to COVID and obesity. I've have had my research published in The Lancet - have you?

Go on then, lets see you go on the record, quoting your GMC number, confirming your opinion that Obesity has nothing at all to do with severity of illness following Covid infection.

Your move.
