About lockdown weight gain

So I was talking to a friend on Zoom and she told me that she has gained a stone and a half during lockdown. I was shocked when I then spoke to other friends and heard the same thing and that I am one of the only ones I know who hasn’t gained weight and used lockdown as an excuse to eat what I like. I am worried about the NHS burden as there are so many patients who have had their treatment delayed due to Covid and the last thing we need is more health issues caused by obesity.
AIBU to think that people should be more responsible? Btw before anyone flames me I am not talking about people who have had a very stressful job during lockdown. My friend said her DH has discovered a love for baking so she has just been sitting there eating bread and butter for 2 months.

I don’t like the weight gain
I’m creeping back to my pre weight loss weight
It’s actually freaky and must be an age thing
I also guess we are way more sedentary , as used to cycle to work

OP I've put on weight during lockdown.

Oh if only as it was as simple as taking self responsibility.

Sounds like you've never had an issue with your weight so you couldn't possibly understand.

I really wish I was a size ten again....if only it were that easy.

Your post does come across as very holier than thou.

I'd just like to say thank you to everyone for contributing to this thread, as it was a great read over lunch.

Umm I dont like gaining weight and I'm not over weight now but I've put on a stone. I'm not 'using lockdown as an excuse to eat what I like' but had a standing desk in my office, exercised at the gym 5 nights a week and was so busy in the evenings with a degree, work and the gym I missed dinner 2 nights a week. Surely it would be mildly abnormal to not have gained weight when our lifestyles have changed so dramatically? I spent 8 weeks moving between my bed, the sofa and my at home desk and only able to run outside 1 hour a day. I did HIITS and things at home but it's hardly the same. Its basic science that even if you're eating the same but moving less then weight will be gained.

I bet they even had the nerve to clap the NHS as well.

"
If all it took to be safe was having a BMI under 25, we'd all be laughing by now! Do you even know what a BMI of 25 is? It's more than being a tad overweight!"

A BMI of 25 is pretty much the definition of being "a tad overweight" as a BMI of 24.9 is with the healthy range. Hmm

Bluntness100 · 15/06/2020 17:00

Op, just for future reference, if you have a judgey/mean/bitchy thought about some poor sod who opened up to you and mistakenly thinks you’re their friend, and You feel all smug in your superiority, it’s not a good idea to go on line and post about it to 16 million people, pretending its concern for a higher cause.

It is seldom going to go well for you. 🤣

Lunch? Fat bastard.

Pinkblueberry · 15/06/2020 17:08

Is it?
25 is in the healthy range. 25.1 I guess is technically overweight - certainly what I would call ‘a tad’.

I thought BMI was a range between 18.5-25?!

Well done you are an inspiration to us all op. I've put on around 10lbs . I work nights in a very intense job (prison service) I'm working 5/6 days a wek 12hr night shift because we are so understaffed. My 4 kids are home all day which makes sleeping hard & I'm also trying to help 2 of my kids who have important exams comming up. I've been reaching for the sweet stuff to give me some energy to get me through the small hrs & cheer myself up a bit. People have many different reasons for putting on quarantine weight. Cut them some slack & don't judge eveyone by your own situation.

NikeDeLaSwoosh · 15/06/2020 18:28

No, the reason is the same for everyone: Eating more calories than they need.

We need to stop distancing ourselves from the consequences of our actions. Each person has full responsibility for every morsel they eat.

The only person who has any control over what goes in their mouths is the individual themselves.

I know this is difficult to hear, but it is the truth - this pandemic would have been far less serious had we heeded the warnings about the dangers of obesity.

Pinkblueberry · 15/06/2020 18:30

@Sweetlikecocan a healthy BMI is between 18.5 - 25. Below 18.5 is classed underweight. Above 25 is overweight. Above 30 is obese. I think 40+ is morbidly obese.

SpokeTooSoon · 15/06/2020 18:31

Do you have statistics for that last comment? When you say “far less serious” what sort of numbers are you talking? I read the majority of deaths were among frail elderly people.

well if it was a simple as that @NikeDeLaSwoosh there wouldn't be any obesity issues at all would there?

And in fact if it was a simple as taking responsibility for what you eat, there'd be no eating disorders at all.

Well. I haven't gained weight wahooooo!! . But I did have a baby so feck me, I'm basically a walrus for NOT losing weight by default. But I'm still going to celebrate because not gaining is all that counts, right? Grin

No logic. But hey. Doesn't change the fact the OP is being a braggy moo
