How does Tesco (mis)count number of items?

There is probably a quick and easy answer to this. But I am preparing to be extravagantly outraged Wink if there isn't and need your guidance!

I managed to book a Tesco slot at midnight last night, and just put a few things in the basket to check out and keep it reserved. I'm always up at the 80 items limit because we live rurally, can't get slots often, and need to shop for an elderly relative as well as our family.

So imagine my surprise when I saw that a shopping list that I would count as seven items was counted by Tesco as 21!

Are they counting individual items of fruit in a pack separately? How far does this go? What will happen if I buy a bag of peas? Or is it only if the number is in the description - so I'd be ok with a bag of 400 peanuts counting as one item but not a six-pack of beer?

Perhaps this is a Known Issue and I've just been happily oblivious until now - or a glitch of some sort?

I think you might have 15kg of loose bananas?

DeltaFlyer · 15/06/2020 07:46

The bananas maybe?

Mumdiva99 · 15/06/2020 07:47

Wow, that's a lot of bananas....Lol.

bobbiester · 15/06/2020 07:48

15kg of bananas = 15 items

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 15/06/2020 07:48

Definitely the bananas, as they are loose each banana counts as an item. Buy a pack instead

Oysterbabe · 15/06/2020 07:49

Because of the 15kg of Bananas.

Splinkyplonk · 15/06/2020 07:50

Are they still counting and limiting? I've been getting much larger deliveries past two weeks, so over 100 items.

Trumpton · 15/06/2020 07:51

Ah ...
I think it’s your bananas !
When you buy loose ones by weight it estimates how many bananas make up that weight .
One banana = one item
Your order looks as if you have put in 15 bananas ( that word looks weird now ....bananas bananas bananas)
Take them out and put in wrapped ones .
That’s the only thing I can think of .

Dammit ... so slow !
85 items now here .

ShouldISurrogate · 15/06/2020 07:52

They add a £4 charge if the basket total is under £40 if that helps

ShouldISurrogate · 15/06/2020 07:54

Just ignore me. Lack of sleep 😂😂 completely irrelevant

JacobReesMogadishu · 15/06/2020 07:55

I’m confident about the bananas. It says 15kg but also says 13p. That’s very cheap for so many bananas.

kenandbarbie · 15/06/2020 07:56

Yeah each item of fruit, veg, bread rolls or more than one of anything the same, counts separately. But as you're shopping they count as one. So at checkout you have to go back and edit down to 80.

ACNH · 15/06/2020 07:56

Yes loose bananas - I do my grandparents shopping and they always ask for 2 carrots 2 parsnips etc - so I get bags (1 item) and give them 2 out of each

BluebellsareBlue · 15/06/2020 07:56

I work for head office, the system recognises each banana as one item and it will go towards your count to 85. Unless you buy packaged bananas there isn't away around it. Sorry.

VettiyaIruken · 15/06/2020 07:57

15kg bananas? That must be, what? 120 or more bananas?
Do you have a pet chimp?

VettiyaIruken · 15/06/2020 07:59

I just saw its a holding basket 😂

I normally stick 3 bottles of vodka in there.

Then get a little sad when I remove them to do the proper shop

JacobReesMogadishu · 15/06/2020 07:59

Confused about the bananas, not confident!

OhBuggerandArse · 15/06/2020 08:01

I thought it was 1.5 kg of bananas! Hang on, will check.

RedRed9 · 15/06/2020 09:21

I’m more confused as to how 15kg of bananas could be 13p? Or is it 13p per banana?

ACNH · 15/06/2020 11:49

@RedRed9 price per unit I’m guessing
