School Staff. How do you feel about summer schools?

Witchcraftandhokum · 15/06/2020 07:26

Just watched an ex-Ofsted inspector on BBC Breakfast talk about how important summer schools will be and how they should be staffed by the same teachers students have normally.

This hasn't been mentioned in our school yet but I really don't know how it will be managed. I can't imagine a lot of staff will be happy to give up their holidays. In our school a good number of the middle leaders and TA's salaries are pro-rata'd to term time only. I've worked full-time from home so it's not like I've been on holiday since March.

How would you feel about being asked to work?

I'm so sorry to all the teachers for starting this thread.

What part of this thread is teacher bashing?

averysuitablegirl · 23/06/2020 21:45

The bit where you said that you 'don't want to make this thread about Teacher Bashing' then went on to say that teachers should do their bit in a global pandemic and that the six weeks holiday that they're entitled to (and not paid for) is 'excessive'.

HTH

averysuitablegirl · 23/06/2020 21:48

Witchcraftandhokum they've deleted one of the anti-unions ones, but they don't agree that the one with the title about the unions 'kicking off' is inflammatory (I also emailed them)

TyphoidMary2020 · 23/06/2020 21:51

Having an opinion that we should all do our bit is not bashing anyone!

LucyLastik · 23/06/2020 21:54

Most teachers have already been doing their bit.
Witchcraftandhokum · 23/06/2020 21:54

avery It's a disgrace, this site has been full of hatred for weeks for a profession that's on it's knees trying to please, kids, parents, the government. They need to remember that the majority of teachers are parents too.

But having an opinion that a section of society should work for free for six weeks to suit you is not showing professional respect really, is it? We can all have an opinion, but you can be rightly called out if your opinion shows prejudice towards a sector and is worded to try to make others join in with your prejudice.

TyphoidMary2020 · 23/06/2020 21:59

We have been lead to believe that we are all in this together, I really do feel concerned for the mental health of people taking it so personally when we are all adult professionals, other people have opinions and that is ok!

BertNErnie · 23/06/2020 22:01

We have surveyed staff again over the last 3 days and people have said they do not want to work so we won't be opening.

I'm going to spend the 6 weeks with my own children as I have neglected them pretty much since March when we were directed to close. I don't want me children to attend key worker provision over the summer as it isn't necessary and it's not fair on them and also it's not about the money but I don't want to work for free.

My day rate is around £250. Not sure anyone will want to pay that.

TyphoidMary2020 · 23/06/2020 22:01

It’s an internet discussion forum for goodness sake!

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 23/06/2020 22:01

Plenty have piled in to give us a kicking. Yeah but no but yeah but no but .......

The majority of us have done our best. Please remember that a lot have not only done on-line lessons or whatever for your children but also our own.

Our own children have been refused key worker spaces as well.

And plenty of us are now back in school at primary level and now secondary level.

I am sure that some on you on this thread will want to re-write history at some stage forgetting the horrid comments that you have made.

Shame on you

Butmiss · 23/06/2020 22:02

Anyway, it's 4 weeks until term ends. This won't be happening on a national scale despite a few people insisting it should.
Perhaps Gav's wife, being a former teacher, made him draw the line at teachers burning out over the summer working for 6 extra weeks. Grin

TyphoidMary2020 · 23/06/2020 22:05

Bernie, I don’t mind working if I am needed, but for that to happen childcare is needed, and as things are not back to normal I and some other Parents are finding it difficult, not sure why some find that so difficult to understand, it’s not a personal attack on anyone.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 23/06/2020 22:07

So childcare needs to be provided and someone needs to pay for (what do you usually do in the summer hol, idays?) Either by individuals or vouchers or whatever.

Not sure what that has to do with teachers?

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 23/06/2020 22:08

I certainly cant see the government paying the extortionate amount it would cost to pay teachers (and site staff etc) and running costs to keep the schools open. They arent known for funding schools...

BertNErnie · 23/06/2020 22:08

And we have been in this together. I've been in this since Feb 1/2 term with literally little to no days off, including weekends. The summer is my time for my family although no doubt I'll be working over the holiday as usual on and off and might have to rethink a few things in terms of Sept depending on the guidance.

I'm currently researching staycations and am hoping to book something this week.

The relaxation of people being able to meet others inside now will hopefully support some working parents and where possible, summer provision that would normally run should ideally be open - even if the government has to subsidise it.

TyphoidMary2020 · 23/06/2020 22:11

It’s not a normal year and normal arrangements are not happening, the keyworker system has been put in place by the government but again that may not be happening so I am wondering how to solve this because six weeks off over summer isn’t an option?

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 23/06/2020 22:11

Maybe start a thread about childcare?

BertNErnie · 23/06/2020 22:12

@TyphoidMary2020 I don't take offence with a discussion. I haven't read the full thread but assume some posters feel there have been comments such as teachers taking 6 weeks off is selfish don't help and get backs up.

I don't know if that was you or someone else but I'm not taking 6 weeks off, I am just not working the 6 weeks I am not paid for or required to work.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 23/06/2020 22:12

Certainly allowing the usual sports offerings and childcare workers (my friends who are childminders are workin3?) Would make far more sense (and be cheaper) than employing teachers.

Appuskidu · 23/06/2020 22:15

so I am wondering how to solve this because six weeks off over summer isn’t an option?

Childcare would be the first port of call, then.

Butmiss · 23/06/2020 22:15

There are many threads about childcare along with suggestions on this thread.
A lot of people have been saying for some time that the government would allow households to mix more for childcare. Parents in my class bubble have already begun doing it, seems to be working well for them.

TyphoidMary2020 · 23/06/2020 22:17

Bernie that was I think in response to some saying they were entitled to six weeks off because they had worked so hard without a break and yet so have NHS and we won’t be getting six weeks off or even know yet what childcare we will be able to access, loads of people have tried to have a go at me on this thread, says more about them than me.

BertNErnie · 23/06/2020 22:20

Sorry got a bit jumbled there. I think you know what I meant
