School Staff. How do you feel about summer schools?

Just watched an ex-Ofsted inspector on BBC Breakfast talk about how important summer schools will be and how they should be staffed by the same teachers students have normally.

This hasn't been mentioned in our school yet but I really don't know how it will be managed. I can't imagine a lot of staff will be happy to give up their holidays. In our school a good number of the middle leaders and TA's salaries are pro-rata'd to term time only. I've worked full-time from home so it's not like I've been on holiday since March.

How would you feel about being asked to work?

Not read the full thread but schools have given compensatory holiday to all staff who worked during school holidays. So they’ve just been rescheduled, not lost. Which is more than the rest of us who have had on holiday at all, either from school or work.

changeofheart1234567 · 23/06/2020 10:11

Ie in our school, teachers have taken a full week of leave either before or after the half term if they had to come into work for key workers during half term. We have hardly any key worker kids though so affected very few teachers or staff and most took holiday as usual. The fact that we haven’t heard from them during term time either is another thing entirely. We are being told they are working hard at home but, whatever they are doing, it isn’t being seen or felt by either parents or pupils.

spanieleyes · 23/06/2020 10:13

That may have happened in your school but not in mine, all staff worked on a rota basis through all the holidays. No time off in lieu has been given ( or asked for) but no one wants to do the same through the summer.

SayakaMurata · 23/06/2020 10:16

Same at my school. We worked through Easter and half term with no time off in lieu. Teachers and TAs worked on a rota, the headteacher and assistant heads and the office manager worked every day throughout the holidays including the bank holidays.

averysuitablegirl · 23/06/2020 16:06

TyphoidMary some Trusts are now encouraging staff to take annual leave, or there will be a huge backlog come the end of the financial year.

Why are summer camps neither here nor there? You said that parents were at risk of burnout without a break, so surely summer childcare can provide that?

Not all NHS staff have been working throughout. Not their fault of course - dentists, opticians etc were told to shut by the government for many, many weeks. Those people can/have taken annual leave.

I know parental leave is unpaid. I mentioned it as something for people to think about if they're close to the parental burnout that you mention.

tisaginthing · 23/06/2020 17:19

Well hopefully people can sort something out with other households over the summer with the lockdown being eased from 4th July. It is difficult, but teachers have their own lives outside of school, pandemic or no pandemic, and the government need to sort this out, not schools. Also work is being done over the summer at many schools, the only time when it can be done.

TyphoidMary2020 · 23/06/2020 19:18

We have two leave years to take this year’s annual leave, to try and avoid the backlog, we don’t know what childcare provision may be available over school summer holidays but no NHS will be having six weeks leave even though they have been working non stop or any parental leave, I find it interesting that you feel entitled to a six week break because you have worked right through when others have too and won’t be getting that break, let’s all hope then that there isn’t a second wave when all the NHS are exhausted and school is then shut again, although I think it most likely if there is a second wave it will be very different, we simply cannot afford a second lockdown [shrug] best we agree to disagree on this probably

myself2020 · 23/06/2020 19:21

I - private company - just won‘t be able to take any leave this year except for Christmas. our holiday allowance will just disappear. well, we could take it, but that would mean not getting work done, and subsequently get let go for underperformance. Its a shit year for everyone

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 23/06/2020 19:28

Typhoid - you do know teachers arent paid for the 6 week break right?

Butmiss · 23/06/2020 19:30

The NHS have had an awful time of it. Having said that, a lot of people who aren't NHS/keyworkers have also worked through this and not had any childcare. Let's not forget that. And many teachers will be working for some of that time they feel 'entitled' to, not to be childcare, but to prepare for September.

averysuitablegirl · 23/06/2020 19:31

TyphoidMary2020 I'm not a teacher, so my viewpoint is nothing to do with me feeling entitled to anything.

But I do think teachers should have the holiday that they are entitled to. Same as I think everyone else should, since you ask.

The latest briefing indicates that childcare will be open over the summer.

myself2020 yes it's a shit year for pretty much everyone, teachers included.

Hopoindown31 · 23/06/2020 19:36

I wonder what all these people who are complaining about the 6 weeks now would have done in a normal year? I would prioritise getting whatever provision that is set back up rather than forcing teaching staff to work over summer.

ScorpionQueen · 23/06/2020 19:42

schools have given compensatory holiday to all staff who worked during school holidays
This just isn't true in any schools I know of. When would school staff get to take this time? School staff have their time off in the school holidays, a teacher can't just book time off whenever.

Thanosatemthamster · 23/06/2020 19:44

I feel "entitled to a 6 week break" because it's part of my contract, and part of the terms and conditions that were laid out when I took the job on. Why should that change half way through? It's not as if there are scores of wannabe teachers lining up to replace me.

Witchcraftandhokum · 23/06/2020 19:44

News to me

In a global pandemic everyone needs to do their bit, Teachers taking six weeks off is selfish whilst simultaneously not giving a monkeys about anyone else, let’s see what the government do, today was the last briefing according to Boris...

Rubbleonthedouble1 · 23/06/2020 19:46

What most people don’t realise (or don’t want to listen!) is that school holidays are. It holidays for teachers as they are not paid for them. It’s not that teachers want their ‘holiday’ they probably just don’t want to work for free. Some teachers (my SIL being one of them) work another job in the summer holidays to top up their income

Butmiss · 23/06/2020 19:46

It amazes me how people think they are entitled to free childcare!
Anyway today's announcement should help people, being able to meet with another household.

Rubbleonthedouble1 · 23/06/2020 19:47

Typhoid...they are not taking six weeks off. They are not paid for holidays!

Witchcraftandhokum · 23/06/2020 19:47

I'm going to report this thread now as I've just caught up with it and it seems to have taken a nasty turn. There's quite enough teacher basing.on here without my thread contributing to it.

OP posts:
Butmiss · 23/06/2020 19:48

I think it's selfish that you expect people to look after the child you chose to have for free. But let's agree to disagree.

TyphoidMary2020 · 23/06/2020 19:49

It is not a normal year and there is no childcare, free or paid, currently available, everyone wants and needs a break, so how does everyone think the government should respond to this global pandemic?

Appuskidu · 23/06/2020 19:49

Teachers taking six weeks off is selfish

1.?It’s part of the teaching contract.

  1. It is not paid.
  2. The government cannot afford to pay school teachers, teaching assistants, catering staff, site staff and cleaning staff to all work over the summer.

Would you like all of those people to work across the summer unpaid? Or just the teachers?

Butmiss · 23/06/2020 19:50

On that note, enjoy the summer with your child!

TyphoidMary2020 · 23/06/2020 19:52

I want an answer to the issue that meets everyone’s needs, what’s your workable solution?
