School Staff. How do you feel about summer schools?

Just watched an ex-Ofsted inspector on BBC Breakfast talk about how important summer schools will be and how they should be staffed by the same teachers students have normally.

This hasn't been mentioned in our school yet but I really don't know how it will be managed. I can't imagine a lot of staff will be happy to give up their holidays. In our school a good number of the middle leaders and TA's salaries are pro-rata'd to term time only. I've worked full-time from home so it's not like I've been on holiday since March.

How would you feel about being asked to work?

I wonder if Teachers would agree to a shorter summer holiday, but longer half term / Christmas holidays, to make up for "lost holidays".
I don't think anyone should be without holidays, the same as children should not be without education. The current sporadic teaching that is going on (I am thinking of children not engaging, parents well out of their depths), is not helpful at all. Children have been off since end of March, their education and retention is already suffering. Teachers will be the ones picking up the pieces in the end... and still having parents, Ofsted and government waging their fingers at them for not delivering the curriculum 12months down the line.

@LolaSmiles my mum is a nurse, she has 150+ hours in lieu from scheduled overtime. (She won't get paid for it as different system to NHS) Currently, there is no way for her to take this time off, if anything she is adding more hours every week due to staff shortage.
Not once does she moan about it. It's only teachers on MN that work hard, above and beyond... other professions may not about as much, simply because they are working!

Butmiss · 15/06/2020 23:09

That might have been an option, had the government thought of it in advance, not 5 weeks before the year ends.
Plus teachers have holidays booked. They might still be able to go but wouldn't get that money back if they cancelled them.

mbosnz · 15/06/2020 23:11

I do wonder about people that hold teachers in such despise - why would you entrust (chuck as fast as you can) your kids at these people for 30 hours a week?

Butteredtoast55 · 15/06/2020 23:11

Things are never as simple as they might sound. What about all the support staff needed to open a school...caretakers, cleaners, office staff? They all need some time away & a break too. We would need to ensure first aiders were present and safeguarding leads. Other than bank holidays I've been in every day and spent two full weekends preparing for wider opening. I'm buggered if I'm going to give up more holiday because Michael Wilshaw and Boris Johnson think it's a good idea.
Many primary teachers will be working for at least two or three weeks of the holiday as they always do anyway. ..planning, preparing resources and getting their rooms ready. This will definitely be the case this summer as we won't be returning to normal for some time and staff may still need to do their online planning. Then there's a fifteen week term ahead once September comes. I honestly think that the government are trying to kill us!

I won't. No more bending over backwards for anything at all that government, media or parents call for. No more volunteering for holiday rotas, no more extra hours unpaid.

You can only throw so much shit at people before they think fuck you and I've reached the point of and the horse you rode in on frankly.

I'll be working as normal, doing what I can for kids, and not martyring myself in any way. Me and a lot more of my fellow teachers. The power of Mumsnet. Marvellous.

LolaSmiles · 15/06/2020 23:17

Sinuhe then I would support her and her colleagues in having that time back or paid because it is wrong to expect people to work unpaid vastly in excess of their contracts.

Nobody has said only teachers work hard so I'm not even bothering to respond to that.

I seriously question this rush to the bottom mentality. Why should others roll over just because someone else hasn't got the same terms and conditions? Instead of workers sniping at each other, there should be some sense of solidarity that our work andour terms and conditions matter.

mbosnz · 15/06/2020 23:17

Do you want me to saddle your horse? Remember to wear a helmet, and solid heeled boots. . .

BlessYourCottonSocks · 15/06/2020 23:23

@mbosnz. I think I love you.Grin

I'll volunteer for your kids. If only all parents were like you. Thanks for your support for teachers at a time when it feels like we're despised by all.

FrippEnos · 15/06/2020 23:23

Sinuhe

Not once does she moan about it

Maybe she should? It would make more sense than talking to you about it so you can use it to whinge and make up rubbish on a forum.

grafittiartist · 15/06/2020 23:23

Anyone watching Newsnight?
Micheal wilshaw has just claimed that if we are good teachers in good schools we will want to do our bit over summer! As a duty if you like.
And he suggests twilight sessions and weekends!
Fabulous- can't wait.

FlowersAreBeautiful · 15/06/2020 23:24

To pay the half a million teachers one months pay extra to cover the summer hols I think it comes to about £2bn GrinDaffodil

Butteredtoast55 · 15/06/2020 23:26

He's an arse.

grafittiartist · 15/06/2020 23:26

Wow!! That's a big number!
He only said it because he couldn't think of an alternative solution to the problem.

Butteredtoast55 · 15/06/2020 23:27

The man who told headteachers that, if staff morale is at an all time low, you must be doing something right. I won't be taking his advice any time soon.

grafittiartist · 15/06/2020 23:27

He managed to not support the government and not support teachers.
Just complained and passed the buck.

Butmiss · 15/06/2020 23:32

@grafittiartist it's cute how they are relying on the goodwill of teachers for that to work. I'm sure that will go really well. Wink

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 15/06/2020 23:33

Wtf?! He wants morale to be low?! Thats crackers.

Yeah. Tell him we did til we came on Mumsnet and now we think he should shove his suggestions up his arse.
grafittiartist · 15/06/2020 23:38

Only if we want to be good teachers. We will be crap teachers if we don't. Smile

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 15/06/2020 23:38

@mbosnz exactly that.. 😆 here we go again with the teacher bashing. Most have worked non-stop!!

Bless...😅

Aren't they sweet when they're all naive and dim?

Greenmarmalade · 15/06/2020 23:46

^Lovelydovey

Many staff have worked hard and deserve their summer break.

Some staff haven’t (including some
Class teachers at my children’s school) - a largely voluntary rota for covering key worker classes, a bare minimum of work sent home (twinkl sheets - all identical for the 4 classes, and taking children 30 mins to complete, no marking) and no calls home. That group could do more.^

Does anyone say this about any other professions during lockdown? Do they say that the GPs have had a really easy ride taking very few calls from home, so should work through their annual leave?!

Ninjaplus1 · 16/06/2020 00:26

My sons school have been brilliant. State school deemed inadequate for years finally achieved a good status 2 years ago.
The teacher sets work every day, any submitted work always receives comments. The teacher rings them, arranges video chats with their classmates and now we have a weekly class quiz.
The teachers need a break. The parents need a break. Just like many parents I’ve worked at home while homeschooling too.
I want to enjoy some time with my son, before we deal with whatever awaits us in September.

LolaSmiles · 16/06/2020 08:38

Greenmarmalade I'm still waiting for the people on several threads who think we should work through our summer to confirm whether they think anyone who has been furloughed should have their 3 months at 80% taken off their future annual leave entitlement. After all nurses and supermarket staff have been at work throughout the pandemic, and someone know someone who isn't getting TOIL or pay for their overtime. That's the reason given for trying to direct teachers more than the 195 days in their contracts.

I've also asked what should happen in the summer in terms of running the school site and whether those saying teachers should work unpaid because they've had all this holiday now (Hmm) are also saying that the IT technicians should work through their holidays, and the TAs who provide SEND support, or the support staff around site, and the cleaners. Apparently they wouldn't have to, but the school would still be open for teachers. I sat and chuckled at the idea of a school running with just teachers and no support staff.

Seriously, some people haven't a clue and just want a good old whinge about teachers.
