I'll start.

I love the viola
I fucking hate the saxophone (Unless played SPELLBINDINGLY well).

Best: violin (but also love the other strings)
Worst: all brass instruments and the flute - they all make my head hurt

Splodge1506 · 15/06/2020 14:33

Favourite: Flutes and whistles, uilleann pipes (they look so hard to play!) but I'll defend the Highland pipes too!

Unfavourite: Hammond-type organ - ugh! (But pipe organs are great, both church and theatre organs.)

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 15/06/2020 14:33

Any instrument played well is pleasant but I dont love bagpipes.

I love any of the double reed woodwind- oboe, cor anglais or a bassoon any day. Secretly hoping DD or DS fancy learning.

LakieLady · 15/06/2020 14:37

Favourites: cello, clarinet, soprano saxophone

Least favourite: digeridoo, pan pipes

Toothsil · 15/06/2020 15:01

Love the viola and cello. I play the violin, and taught myself the viola as a teenager. Now DD plays the cello and I'm trying it out myself.

Worst - recorder when played badly!

KayakingOnDown · 15/06/2020 16:46

I recall reading somewhere that Mozart's favourite instrument was the viola, and his least favourite the flute. I don't know if this is true and doesn't make sense in terms of the concertos he wrote, but I definitely have heard it.

I dislike the classical flute - the Irish one is a bit better.

Devlesko · 15/06/2020 16:58

Best - Saxophone, and other wind instruments.

Worst - Viledin Violin.

iklboo · 15/06/2020 17:15

I adore the cello. It sounds so beautiful.

I don't really hate any musical instruments. Bagpipes in a massed band can sound really good. On their own they're a bit grating though.

Jazz trumpet is up there with annoyances but that's probably more of the way it's played in the genre than the instrument itself.

VeryQuaintIrene · 15/06/2020 17:20

Best - piano, organ, clarinet and French horn in competent hands

Worst - those horrible breathy panpipes give me the rage.

Hoppinggreen · 15/06/2020 17:23

I also hate the violin and like most patents the recorder
I absolutely love Spanish guitar

bluefoxmug · 15/06/2020 17:40

@Coffeebiscuitsrepeat I guess it's because when a contrabassoon comes out at concert you are in for some serious goosebumps.

Sunrainwind 'I don't like piccolos by themselves'

What's worse than one piccolo by itself, though, is two piccolos together.

avocadoze · 15/06/2020 17:51

Best: recorder, harpsichord, lute
Worst: piano. Flute (ugh at that breathy sound)

Moosey65 · 15/06/2020 22:37

Best would be a classical guitar and a harp. You could hit a harp with a hammer and it would still sound great.
Worst would have to be bagpipes.

FrankRattlesnake · 15/06/2020 23:12

Current favourite - kalimba
Least favourite- the agogo bell I bought a few weeks ago. Just slightly too high in tone which grated on me!

TheAdhesiveDuckDeficiency · 16/06/2020 03:08

Favourite - cello

Least favourite - trumpet or trombone, maybe? Anything played badly is rather awful.

I played the flute as a teenage and got reasonably good. Then, in my wisdom, I decided to try the oboe. It’s a beautiful instrument but it was so hard learn to play. My poor, poor parents.
