To ask for your favourite and least favourite musical instruments?

I'll start.

I love the viola
I fucking hate the saxophone (Unless played SPELLBINDINGLY well).

Favourite piano.
Worst bagpipes .

Most favourite: the cello.

Least favourite: also the saxaphone. I do quite like the bit in Baker Street though but mainly i associate it with naff 80s music. I so want to like it because dd's school music shows are 80% saxaphones. I try, what can I say.

Worst (jointly) over powering drums and bagpipes

Favourite - cello, french horn or bagpipes played well

Worst - clarinet and accordion (hate hate hate!!!) and it doesn't matter how well they are played, I can't stand the sound, tone etc of these instruments!! (Can you tell I feel strongly about this 😜)

Fave cello

Worst steel drums, sax, pan pipes, harpsichord, Recorder, flute in roughly that order. Not wild about harps. I like quiet

Best; hammer dulcimer played well, or something more bassy like a cello.
Worst; accordion, bagpipes, or ukelele.

I’m still scarred from year 7s attempting to join in the school orchestra with their violins. shudder

A well played violin is beautiful and I have massive respect for any parent who gets their kid into the instrument and tolerated to that level.

Shawms are pretty awful.

Love - piano, saxaphone

Hate - the flute. I absolutely hate it with a passion. Grrrrrrr.... Like running nails down a blackboard. Yuck yuck!!!!

I'm ignoring proficiency and comparing at professional level.

Best probably cello or French horn.

Worst yeah, bagpipes. In an orchestra, maybe the triangle? Just because it's pretty one-dimensional.

Actually @KayakingOnDown has a point - panpipes I absolutely hate; they make my skin crawl. Also, thinking about @Batqueen's nomination of voice as an instrument, I find an excessively vibrato soprano pretty offensive.

I have come on to defend the bagpipes...I think they are amazing!

I can’t choose a least favourite - I can see the merit in all instruments. I’m a high school music teacher so it’s probably a good thing

Love the sax - so sultry and sexy.
There is nothing I don’t like if played well.

Best - uilleann pipes, oboe, flute
Worst - concertina, fingerstyle guitar, low whistle

Worst is def sax...yuck
Best...toughie but piano I'd say. Can be so emotive and the grand piano is such a beautiful object

I can’t think of an instrument I dislike.

Not a big fan of voice though. The slightest hint of being out of tune sets my teeth on edge. School choir concerts are very very hard. I wish I could get over myself but it seems to be beyond my conscious control.

Worst: violin and flute
Best: anything that isn't a violin or flute

Best: piano
Worst: euphonium

I’m a brass bander so ......

Best any of the traditional brass band instruments

Worst - all instruments have their merits but I’m a bit twitchy about handbells

Fave- drums

Worst- sax. Particularly alto sax. I’m sure when the devil gets up in the morning he puts on Kenny g before getting busy

I agree it's obviously to do with the level of playing, but there is an element of our reaction to the initial sound/timbre too.

My friend plays the cello. The attention he gets from women is UNBELIEVABLE. It is a sexy instrument, I agree.

Saxophone - I just think it has a "honky", metallic edge to it. I think classical saxophone is a different beast though. I like it played in the Mussorgsky "Pictures at an Exhibition" for example!

Oh dear - Bagpipes really aren't doing well!
