I love the viola
I fucking hate the saxophone (Unless played SPELLBINDINGLY well).

@Grinchbinch @cologne4711 @Cocobox

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves British bagpipes! (Border/Northumbrian/Irish)

(...even if the Scottish Highland pipes are a bit raucous!)

Coffeebiscuitsrepeat · 15/06/2020 12:46

@MaskOnBus Bagpipes. 😂

DollyDoneMore · 15/06/2020 12:47

Bagpipes are not a musical instrument, they are a warning from an army that violence is on the way.

Pambalambalam · 15/06/2020 12:57

Love a harp. HATE saxophones with a passion. And bagpipes.

GoldenPlatitudes · 15/06/2020 12:59

Poor bagpipes have had a hard time on this thread! I like them, make me feel a bit emotional.

Favourite instrument is the vibraphone. Can be so so beautiful

Worst is the trombone. Farting motorcycles revving their engines and a comedy 'rwaaarrrr' noise all combined into one. Delightful

Grinchbinch · 15/06/2020 13:23

@MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 completely forgot Northumbrian smallpipes! I love the sound. Have to confess I am not a big GHB fan though. They're just a bit... much. Mind you, sitting near to any bagpipe is a bit overpowering!

Why do people hate the flute so much? Just wondering really. I hate the insipid sound of a silver flute played by someone who is fair to middling (ie, me) but a very good classical player or a wooden flute is lovely.

ginghamtablecloths · 15/06/2020 13:24

Love a violin.

Hate kettledrums.

Londonmummy66 · 15/06/2020 13:27

Love - harpsichord
Hate wobbly vibrato sopranos

Sadly the two often go together.

BenWyatt · 15/06/2020 13:32

Basically love all instruments (I am a musician). Except for the fucking saxophone which I am sure is the sound Satan's farts make.

VenusClapTrap · 15/06/2020 13:34

Favourite: Oboe. I fell in love with the oboe in the film The Mission, and decided to learn to play. I failed. It’s very hard. I have tried to persuade the dc to learn, but they’ve picked other instruments, sob.

Least: Drums. I don’t hate them, and I can appreciate what they contribute, but compared to other instruments - nope, they hold little charm for me.

CruCru · 15/06/2020 13:45

I like most instruments if played well. I particularly like the accordion, bagpipes, bassoon and cello. I love recorders if played extremely well.

I don't much like guitars and saxophones. I think that they were fashionable when I was in school. Guitars always seemed to be played by boys who would frown when they talked to you. Saxophones fill up with spit even worse than trumpets.

I am a bit prejudiced against clarinets. I think perhaps I don't like a lot of reed instruments.

GetHerOut · 15/06/2020 13:46

Best: Saxophone, cello or double bass
Worst: Recorder

I like the bagpipes. Though the proper context is a military parade rather than a concert hall.

Skyliner001 · 15/06/2020 13:51

Violin.

Least favourite- the recorder.

greathat · 15/06/2020 13:54

My son is a beginner on the violin. I thought that was the worst until I had to sit through music school concerts and realised the position is held by the beginner trombones

Fifthtimelucky · 15/06/2020 13:56

Agree that it depends how well it's being played. Recorders and violins are probably the worst instruments in the wrong hands, but sound beautiful when played well.

The harp is probably the most forgiving of beginners (provided it's in tune of course).

My favourites are the piano, harp, classical guitar/lute and the violin, viola, cello. The latter 3 really need to played with others to sound their best, whereas the first three sound complete by themselves.

I've always hated the bagpipes. Only once did I enjoy the sound of them being played - at a funeral. Not really keen on any wind or brass, but the oboe and recorder are the best options.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 15/06/2020 13:57

Irish bagpipes are fabulous! Especially for a slow air / lament.
I don’t hate any instrument. Played well all sound great.
I am very partial to stringed instruments. I had no problem with 2 DDs learning violin, I enjoyed their progress, but thankfully neither really made squeaky scratchy sounds when starting.

Megatron · 15/06/2020 14:00

Favourite Violin or bagpipes (you bagpipe haters are weirdos Grin)

Least fav - recorder and harpsichord (weird and creepy sound)

HeronLanyon · 15/06/2020 14:03

Cello. Oboe. Have played both.
What possessed me to take up oboe as second I instrument is now beyond me.
Completely essential in an orchestra but NOT a solo triumph to my ear.

Sgtmajormummy · 15/06/2020 14:08

Least favourite: the flute when it’s audibly full of spitty condensation.
Or instruments with little variation in tone like harp, guitar or harpsichord.

Favourite: piano.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 15/06/2020 14:08

OP - you play the bagpipes?!!! Haha - oh dear!!!!

bluefoxmug · 15/06/2020 14:12

best - contrabassoon
worst - recorder

Favourite: flute and piano
Least favourite: string instruments, but I do like them when played well. I play in a wind band for this reason!

I also really like the trumpet (this is what I play, along with piano) but would like to learn the flute. I don't like piccolos by themselves but soaring above the band in marches etc is very effective.

Coffeebiscuitsrepeat · 15/06/2020 14:24

@MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 Haha no, I was just kidding 😂

@bluefoxmug Contrabassoon - exotic choice! Those things must cost a fortune to maintain!
