Had anyone’s child gotten over cat allergy?

My daughter suddenly about 6 months ago became allergic to the cat (according to the doctor). He prescribed nasal drops But they’ve done nothing. I’m not exaggerating, she sniffs every 2-3 seconds and it’s getting to the point I’m struggling to be in the same room. I feel like I’m going to snap. The doctor said not to get rid of the cat as she will eventually get over the mild allergy with exposure. I’m not sure how much longer I can cope with the sniffing! I don’t know wether to give piriton to help?
Aibu in keeping the cat or will she grow out of it.

slightly different but my daughter got over a horse allergy. I went with the exposure thing as there was no way the horses were going 😂 she's absolutely fine now. I'm still working on her dad who can tell within 5 mins if I've so much as looked at a horse.... Wheezing, eyes running - the lot!

Yes you’re being extremely unreasonable keeping the cat to the detriment of your child. You are keeping an allergen around her deliberately, if you find the sniffs troublesome imagine how she finds them? Rehome the cat.

I don’t tell her off, I just have to leave the room sometimes.

I’ve only kept the cat because the doctor said it would be better for her to have the exposure to it.

Your doctor told you it would be better to keep an allergen around your child instead of removing it? I’d get a new doctor.

We have cats, but I'm allergic. Allegra works for me. There's a new cat food out that's supposed to help with allergies.

Is her allergy in relation to when you got cat? Or sudden onset and day been around for longer?

Had cat since before she was born. She had a major stressful event happen last year and the allergy seemed to slowly develop from there. Every member of my family and friends have cats so doctor says getting rid of our cat may mean she will react more extremely to their cats as her body won’t be used to the constant exposure.

I got over an animal allergy. I’m asthmatic and the asthma nurse, like the doctor said exposure was the way. I still reach with a new animal but adjust to my own.

Theres no way of knowing if it is the cat though?

She started sniffing after a major stressful event, and the cat had been in the house with no sniffing for years.

Sorry to hear that, OP. We had some success with regular wipes to remove the dander and with a HEPA filter. I couldn't lose a little member of the family and I can see the sense concerning the rationale for managing the allergy by keeping the cat.

I forgot to mention the dander removal treatment led to some improvement in days.

Where did you get the treatment? Is it something I can order?

I thought the HEPA filter was worth it, OP, though good ones are not cheap so it will depend on your budget.

With new animals it got progressively better over a few months. I find fluffy animals the worst. Smooth coated I’m ok with.

I still struggle when the horses shed their coats in the summer. But it’s short lived and certizine helps.

I struggled as a small child so much a cat allergy (and smokine.) Funnily enough exposure didnt help abd I used to hide in my room to try and escape. Cat dander gets everywhere though.

As an adult I took piriton whenever I visited cats etc but now I know and generally avoid very catty houses.

I really feel for a child whose parent is avoiding them because theyre struggling. I remember being told to stop sniffing at school due to the allergies my parents exposed me to 🙄.

I’m just looking at them now, do you have one in every room?
