For me, I realise after weeks in lockdown that I spent a fortune on kids clothes that they never wore, way too much and getting on fine with no new purchases!
Also, spent a fortune on make up and skin care that o am still using, makes me think I was living in a world where there was so much excessive expenditure on material thanks I did not need, will be mindful in future!

All of this cutting back on things will not be good at all for the economy.

looking at the queues to the shops and the waiting time to get any delivery from overworked shops and warehouses, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

BearBearBearBear · 15/06/2020 14:28

@mrsjbaptiste haha this is so true. I do bloody love the pub - but I have saved a small fortune so will probably try not go as frequently.

blue25 · 15/06/2020 14:34

People really should be thinking twice about mindless consumerism. We waste so much money on crap and create huge environmental problems.

I really hope this lockdown has made more people realise how wasteful they are. It certainly has me. I’m sorry for those who lose jobs etc. but I’m not going to spend my money on crap just to keep companies afloat.

zafferana · 15/06/2020 14:47

Anyone else feeling sorry for the hairdressers and barbers?

Yes, but not for the reason you think! Around here, they are going to be working flat-out for months to catch up. I don't know one person who can't wait to get their hair cut/coloured. When they reopen my DH is going to take our two DSs (who look like woolly bushes) and stand in line outside the barbers until they can call be seen. I'd love to make a hair appointment and wish my hairdresser would call me (I've tried to contact them, but the phone just rings, no answerphone, no way to book online - very frustrating!)

StCharlotte · 15/06/2020 15:29

And I'm sure most of those who say they won't go back to the hairdressers, pubs, restaurants, takeaway coffee outlets, will be back there within three months time.

True.

cologne4711 · 15/06/2020 16:31

For those who haven't, please start spending freely again. Pumping money back into the economy is the only way we will avoid a long lasting and crippling depression

We are, but not buying "things". We're having services done - eg have had a second internet line installed, radiator replaced, tomorrow some work in the garden. We have a big ticket item because we're having a garden office installed, and at some point also need to have some decorating done because we had a leaky pipe at the beginning of lockdown and have brown stains on the ceiling.

TheSoapyFrog · 15/06/2020 16:33

I won't be so reliant on the supermarkets. Local farm shops, butchers and other such businesses have been invaluable to me with their deliveries and the produce is so much better.

wildchild554 · 15/06/2020 17:47

It's more one thing I will be doing is stocking up on paracetamol as I'm sick of being in constant pain cause can't get the ibuprofen and paracetamol I need for pain management with shielding which I'm on full dose daily and no can't get on prescription to get a months supply I have tried, Never want to have to go through this again :( Other than that I will go back to normal when this is over and when I no longer have to shield.

Holymama · 15/06/2020 17:47

So agree with the original post. I will not be going back to buying from companies that do nothing to look after this precious world we live in, and will definitely be buying less. We have discovered as a family in this time of suffering how much we already have.

Gmom · 15/06/2020 17:55

I’m done with going into the large Sainsburys. Will continue to keep ordering meat from our local butcher who kept us going through lockdown. It costs 3 times as much but I’m happy to spend more knowing exactly which farm the meat came from and that it has been handled on a less industrial scale and to be loyal to the business that came through when Ocado melted down in April. I will keep better track of what’s in my fridge and will keep to my weekly grocery delivery slot religiously. I used to go to the supermarket instead of getting a delivery for the fun of browsing but can’t think of anywhere I less want to go now. It’s not that I fear coronavirus. I hate the queuing and masks.

MrsBadcrumble123 · 15/06/2020 17:55

@DontTouchTheMoustache I can totally relate to that!

MrsBadcrumble123 · 15/06/2020 17:57

@MorrisZapp
WTF??

RuthW · 15/06/2020 18:02

I will....

Stay in more, at least four nights a week

Stay in more at the weekend.

Go longer in between haircuts

Carry on with grocery home delivery and it was something I had stopped over the last few years

Spend more on food and less on everything else

Nearly47 · 15/06/2020 18:14

Eating at Macdonald's, Nando's and fast food restaurants in general. I actually managed to lose a few pounds during lockdown and I think it's down to cutting down on the fast food. I will at least try Grin

Mingmoo · 15/06/2020 18:15

I think things will even out because people will spend money differently, but they will still spend. I want to buy a bigger fridge/freezer so I can batch cook things and make better use of my shopping, but I also want to cut back on food waste and spend less on that. It will take a good while for the food waste savings to catch up with the cost of the freezer.

I want to buy much less from Amazon. They aren't ethical employers and they have benefited massively from this lockdown but don't pay anything like the level of tax they should, and we're all going to get thumped for tax to pay for lockdown subsidies so I don't see why they should get money from me. I'm going to buy books from bookshops, because a high street without a bookshop is a sad place. Top tip: if you don't have an independent bookshop near you, you can order online with a company called hive.co.uk and nominate a bookshop to get their share of the cover price (which is generally reduced). I don't work for them; I just love the idea.

bellocchild · 15/06/2020 18:18

Realising that Zoom and Skype are pretty good socially, as well as (recently!) for language classes and virtual tours. And that Whatsapp groups are an excellent way to gossip.:-)

FelicisNox · 15/06/2020 18:23

I know this response is ambiguous but I'm not doing things that don't make me happy anymore.

I'm making a lot of personal, professional and financial changes at the moment and it's long overdue.

Purplealienpuke · 15/06/2020 18:27

I won't be visiting my home town again. My mum died 3 weeks ago. No need to go there again 😔

runningon · 15/06/2020 18:31

Thanks purple

I'm not going back to lots of mini supermarket shops
Hopefully not going back to my job - trying to re-train which will hopefully result in a new career.
Yes to baking cakes - never really bothered before, but now I plan to always have cake in the cake tin

Areallthenamestaken · 15/06/2020 18:34

@purplealienpuke sorry to hear about your mum

I would like to carry on making my awful sister in law stand at the end of the drive instead of coming in the house... and generally not see people who cause me stress out of obligation or politeness

Ladystardust777 · 15/06/2020 18:39

I’m sooo with you in that one!
I work at home too.
Sick of my own company ...
Cabin fever is right.
I have so lot’s to do, but it’s so hard when no one else is around to have even a brief cuppa and chat with ....

BackBoiler · 15/06/2020 18:42

I'm going to do MORE stuff and stop saying I'm too busy cleaning etc!

nuitdesetoiles · 15/06/2020 18:58

I will not be spending hours driving for work purposes. Unless it's direct clinical contact the majority of my meetings can be done on teams.

I won't be booking all our family holidays in school holidays anymore...they can't fine us for a few days out now surely...Grin

Usernamerequired · 15/06/2020 18:59

I’ll not go back to going to the supermarket for the ‘big shop’. Home delivery from now on, a lot less hassle. It’ll be a long time before i feel confident enough to go clothes shopping and being unable to try on clothes before buying will be difficult to do

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 15/06/2020 19:02

I’m looking forward to being able to go to church on a Sunday morning again. But equally I’m glad that we will continue streaming services online in some way, because many people are “attending” who wouldn’t generally be able to. Since local restrictions have been slightly lifted we’ve been enjoying the local countryside more (weather permitting) and I don’t want to go back to taking that for granted.
