Scottish Govt saying PT home schooling is likely for the full school year

Scottish Govt is saying that blended learning (part time in school, part time home schooling) is likely to be in place for the full academic year.

Honestly, if I'm trying to juggle work and teaching 2 primary kids this time next year I'm going to have a nervous breakdown.

Funnily enough, UK govt at pains to reassure people that it's safe to start shopping on Monday, if its safe enough to shop, how isn't it safe enough to open schools?

I'm considering a tutor too but DH is telling me to 'wait and see'. I fear that if I 'wait and see', there won't be any tutors left!

Plus DD might be resistant to the idea - she is doing her school work every day but only the essentials and never the 'if you feel like it' extras the teachers add on.

Sulusu · 15/06/2020 12:12

If I was a teacher in Scotland now, I would be very tempted to move into full time tutoring, there is going to be a massive demand soon, from those that can afford it of course.

applesandpears33 · 15/06/2020 12:39

I'm already looking for tutors for my child who has just moved into S5. It could be very lucrative indeed. Our young people are being failed by the education system and I am trying to fill some of the gaps. I can't afford a tutor for every subject though.

MorrisZapp · 15/06/2020 12:44

No Covid deaths in last 24 hours, hospital numbers down by over 80.

AudacityOfHope · 15/06/2020 12:47

Pretty much a rebuttal there in the daily briefing from NS about what JS alluded to yesterday. Says the intention is to ramp up to normal schooling as quickly as possible.

Mightymurphy · 15/06/2020 12:48

NS has just said

I want to be particularly clear on this point. While we of course have a duty to be open with parents that none of us right now have a crystal ball and the path this pandemic will take in the months ahead remains uncertain, it is absolutely not the case that we are planning for blending learning with children learning from home for part of the School week to last a year or anything like it.

Bollss · 15/06/2020 13:10

I'm really glad to hear that. I assume there has been quite a bit of backlash for her to say that.

ATomeOfOnesOwn · 15/06/2020 13:14

Last week our school was saying it would likely be blended learning. Today, they're saying everyone will be back at school full-time.
I think they have no idea tbh. They're preparing for every eventuality and will obviously decide closer to the time what will actually happen.

nextslideplease · 15/06/2020 13:15

I'm not holding my breath. Its a vague "dont worry".

There will still be some kind of blended learning come august and parents will be losing their jobs, most likely working mothers.

She's only saying these things cause she knows we are pissed, not because she's going to change anything.

GuiltyBark · 15/06/2020 13:17

Our children have been entirely thrown under the bus and it is an absolute disgrace.

AudacityOfHope · 15/06/2020 13:17

Well nobody can win then can they, when people have that attitude. Don't say anything, you're wrong, say what people want/need to hear, you're wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dances · 15/06/2020 13:18

Perfect bloody reason to excuse the shit show that is Curriculum For Excellence. The SNP took the excellent Scottish education system and turned it into a sham.

There is hardly even any literature at National 5 English and they study films at Higher.

MazDazzle · 15/06/2020 13:22

That’s not the same across the board though Dances. At my school they study Shakespeare at N5 and Higher, no films at all.

SockYarn · 15/06/2020 13:33

Great to see the First Minister and Deputy First Minister singing so consistently from the same song sheet. Hmm

Kokeshi123 · 15/06/2020 13:39

Why? Do you think it should be optional?

Well, most countries are not pushing attendance right now.

Kokeshi123 · 15/06/2020 13:45

In that John Swinney interview, it explained that according to John Swinney, "The homeschooling portion of the curriculum will not be legally enforced."

How very nice of him to agree not to arrest and charge parents for not managing to teach piles of schoolwork to their children while holding down a paid job and perhaps wrangling a toddler at the same time.

Or is this a tacit admission that the Scottish government has already accepted that parents basically will be able to do very little of the teaching in this so-called "blended" learning, and that what is actually expected to happen is that kids will get half an education for a whole year.

spottedelk · 15/06/2020 14:05

There are loads of tutors online. I looked into doing some tutoring work, but the tutoring companies have had loads of people applying and won't accept any more. Obviously, highly qualified and experienced ones are likely to be scarce.

nextslideplease · 15/06/2020 14:34

DD just had a complete meltdown at the thought of having "a complete stranger" tutoring her.

She insists she does everything her school teachers tell her to do and that should be enough. She says she doesn't need any more, especially not from "some random wierdo" (in her words)

She's a smart girl, but isn't grasping that what she's getting or will get, is not good enough.

I already clash with her a lot because I'm a nag about school work, grades and future career instead of letting her be a normal teenager

nextslideplease · 15/06/2020 14:37

so she keeps telling me anyway Sad

DH doesn't take education as seriously nor do his parents. Its very much leave them to it and take their own path / see what happens.

SudokuBook · 15/06/2020 14:50

I know! Fucks sake

DisobedientHamster · 15/06/2020 15:09

Obviously, highly qualified and experienced ones are likely to be scarce.

God, yes, I have a tocher of money sitting around I had no idea what to do with it! I know! I'll hire tutors for my kids with additional support needs to make up for the government's not providing them with their legal right to education. Hmm

WhatTheWhoNow · 15/06/2020 15:11

Received my email from school today to say dc will indeed be attending one day per week, and 2 days every third week.

nextslideplease · 15/06/2020 15:29

Just got an email from our school....

Saying how to buy a new blazer

FFS

Nothing about the timetable yet

TakemetoGreeceplease · 15/06/2020 15:35

We got an email saying not to bother with uniforms. That will be the one I've already bought then Hmm. Total shit show. Why is no one asking nicola how parents are supposed to go to work with children at home? Absolutely no mention of single parents either. No point asking my employer to 'be flexible', bottom line they need me on site to do my job otherwise they'll need to replace me.

InfiniteGerbils · 15/06/2020 15:35

Ate @MorrisZapp but don’t let that get in the way of Nicola telling us she “doesn’t want to be here in a few weeks time telling you all that the numbers have increased and the deaths have gone up”.

Fuck off Nicola.
