TikTok - WTF?

UnaCorda · 13/06/2020 20:13

Feeling a bit bored earlier this afternoon (and inspired slightly by the excellent Sarah Cooper), I had a look at TikTok to see what all the fuss was about. I'm still none the wiser (all the videos were utter drivel, imo), but amongst all the clips of mainly teenagers and young adults was one uploaded by Amanda Holden.

In this video she walks down the stairs of her immaculate house, stops by the door to zip up her hoodie and smile at the camera, walks though and closes the front door, and turns round for a final glance at the camera.

Please can someone explain how you attain the level of narcissism required to think that anyone would be remotely interested in watching a 49-year-old woman walk down some stairs and zip up a cardigan? (And please also explain why this epitome of mundanity has several thousand likes...)

I feel like I'm in an episode of Black Mirror and life has been reduced to 30-second segments of asinine inanity. (Yes, I know I'm being a bit of a snob about it, but I genuinely don't get the hype.)

My DD's on there cooking, I think it's up to about 80k views now.

Custardcreamies101 · 13/06/2020 21:22

Some videos are just hilarious.

SockYarn · 13/06/2020 21:24

DD is 14 and is on tiktok ALL the time. She and her friends spend hours learning little dance routines and uploading them. It's all fairly pointless. All she ever watches is other teenagers doing similar dances, or some dancing pop stars or Strictly pros.

It's mainly kids and teens my 10 yr old loves dancing onit (private account) and also public account of her doing roblox

Bonkerz · 13/06/2020 21:28

I don't go on very often but when I do I get stuck in the tik tok hole for a few hours. Time passes too fast lmao

I like to scare my kids too my saying phrases like "don't be suspicious" or "I think you know where it's about to go" and humming songs pretending I know the dance !!!!

Caplin · 13/06/2020 21:31

I’m not expert, but my kids have come up with some bloody clever, creative and funny stuff somehow using TikTok. Lots is utter narcissistic crap, but you can do some very funny family fun stuff with the technology. We did that viral dance thing with The Weekend song, Blinding lights. It was hilarious...we never posted it, but it was funny.

I like The Flemings, an Irish country family, they make me fall about. m.youtube.com/watch?v=43RV7eZgRmI

The fact you and Amanda Holden look and are on Tik Tok will mean a new platform will come about, the fact that people worry about Facebook mining data whilst the CCP essentially own Tik Tok and happily jump ship shows it will take a couple of Guardian articles before MN is up in arms and proclaim they don't use it.

It is essentially another form of vapid social media, you may not see the point whilst you gladly follow pointless insta/pintrest/twitter threads, but it is the youth moving onto a newer platform. The fact that the data sharing between them and apple hasn't hit the headlines will be the apparent social marker of intellect after the Guardian has run an op-ed on it.

Ghostbuster123 · 13/06/2020 21:54

As my mum would say if she was chocolate she would eat herself 😂I don't understand why Amanda Holden gets so much airtime totally agree with you there!

MorganKitten · 13/06/2020 21:55

It’s also a great tool for people asking for nudes etc and there’s Ben a lot of porn on there

MashedSpud · 13/06/2020 21:58

It’s shite. DH receives the odd video from his 50 year old friend who loves it and it’s 99% crap.

tiredvommachine · 13/06/2020 21:59

@Bonkerz Step on the gas!!

Love TicTok 😂

RyanBergarasTeeth · 13/06/2020 22:01

Some tik toks are really funny but it will never beat vine. However disturbingly there seems to be a lot of animal and child abuse videos on tik tok lately. Like two women pouring milk over a toddlers head. People scaring dogs and cats until they react and one where a family were smashing a birthday cake into a toddlers face and really rubbing it in as the kid tries to escape. It needs moderating a whole lot more.

OldWomanSaysThis · 13/06/2020 22:03

Inane entertainment is the point of TikTok.

Some of it is so funny, so creative.
For other videos, the creator is clearly just phoning it in. Lazy.

I love the animal ones and Tabitha Brown telling me she loves me.

BumDiggyDiggyDiggyBumDiggyBum · 13/06/2020 22:03

Yes u defo just watched the wrong video. I just had a look at it, the comments are full of people asking what the point in the video was.

Some of the videos are absolutely hilarious, and I love seeing doggy ones. Can get lost in a TikTok hole for hours! And DD and I have had fun making some of them too.

GreyishDays · 13/06/2020 22:07

I’m on TikTok to have a clue what DD is doing. I saw a video of Amanda Holden running along her kitchen cupboards, slamming the in time to the drum beat of ‘In the Air tonight’ (I think). It was quite cleverly done. Cute.

Insideout99 · 13/06/2020 22:11

@Cherrypi omg yes! Pool cleaning tiktoks are therapeutic

Quirrelsotherface · 13/06/2020 22:11

Did she shag Christ Tarrant in a field?!

Ponoka7 · 13/06/2020 22:16

So at what age do women become not worth watching? Obviously 49 is too decrepit to be of any interest.

Amanda Holden is in the classic Eastenders, on at the minute. I liked her in Wild at Heart and she seems ok.

Sparklfairy · 13/06/2020 22:16

This is my favourite tiktok ever

www.tiktok.com/@iamdulo/video/6821254677909212422

The guy has a bunch of "putting human voices to animals" videos but I could watch this one all day Grin

Quirrelsotherface · 13/06/2020 22:21

I just had a look and to be fair the woman looks incredible. She's attractive and she knows it, why does it make her a narcissist?!

UnaCorda · 13/06/2020 22:25

I wouldn't have found that video any more interesting if the participant had been 14 or 77, but at least with a teenager I can see why they'd do it. For a woman (or man) in their forties it just seems, as I said, weirdly narcissistic.

Hate TIK TOk with a vengeance , full of porn and attracts too many pedophiles .

UnaCorda · 13/06/2020 22:28

Being attractive doesn't make someone a narcissist (although it may or may not contribute). Thinking that the world wants to watch you walking down your stairs and leaving your house, or putting your bins out, possibly does.

I have to admit, that's pretty funny. Grin
