Child constipated been given suppository..Advice please?

I have to my 7 year old a suppository. She has been struggling for over a week now. We have had problems before but she was fine for over a year and now it is back. I hate the thought of doing it and I am worried. She is out all day tomorrow with her dad so I don't want to give it to her tonight but I don't want to see her struggle anymore.

When's the best time would nighttime be ok? And how did it go?

We’re abroad and suppositories are the norm here particularly for younger children. It’s always a struggle and they don’t love it but they work well...

I use them when my kids have high temps or are in pain. They can’t bring it back up.

I wouldn’t give one at night as you don’t want them waking up needing the loo...give it in the morning. I assume you have one specifically for constipation?

Use a bit of water to coat it, or olive oil if it's not at all slippery (if it's glycerin then water will be enough). It really won't hurt, it's tiny compared to a poo. Get her to put her knees to her chest. It'll be over in 1 second. Better than leaving her to struggle with constipation, poor little thing.

My son has chronic constipation ,depending on what supposiitory you are giving her it might give her stomach cramps ,I normally give my son then at night but he's disabled so wears a nappy and he's more likely to have a bowel movement at night when he's relaxed

Have you not used them before? Why were you prescribed them this time?

Were you not advised how best to administer?

Whilst I hope it does work for her ,one suppository is often not enough for my son ,is she prescribed anything orally too.?

My son used to suffer from constipation. One time he hadn’t been for a week. GP examined him and he was faecally impacted. He was prescribed laxido sachets, 4 the first day, 6 the next, then 8. The second day of 8 sachets he had his bowels well open without any discomfort. GP said that suppositories aren’t used as a first treatment.

If you are going to give the suppository then explain it to her, get her to lie on left side and relax. Use some lubrication and insert with your little finger if you can. Stay with her and encourage her to try and hold it in for 10 minutes or so. Warn her dad that if she hasn’t been then she needs to be near a toilet.

Prescribed today and over the phone. At the moment she is on movicol and has done tiny amounts. She isn't in pain but struggles to go when on the toilet all this week. The doc said to try suppository, she was very rushed and quick on the and she didn't say when or how just said to read instructions. It doesn't day when to give it but I assume anytime by the sounds of it. I have done it before with my son for a fever along time ago now. I have explained to my daughter and she seems fine

Nice guidelines for constipation I’m children

First line treatment should be to titrate up the Movicol until she can’t hold it in any more then reduce it down to a maintenance dose

I’m surprised the Dr just gave you one suppository

My daughter was given the impaction regime too, same as pp - two sachets day 1, four sachets day 2, six on day 3 and eight on day 4. Works every time.
