I keep thinking I can't be more appalled by our media and our misogynistic society.... and then....

I haven’t red the Sun article, but I honestly think it’s a supportive piece on JK. I know she might be upset by seeing him in any article, but she’s not naive and I’m sure she expected it. I red the article in the DM and it’s an excellent piece and couldn't be more supportive of her. I know and understand why most posters don’t like the DM, but I’m surprised, considering how misogynistic it normally is, how much support there is in the comments.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 12/06/2020 01:26

He admitted to slapping her in the street but claims he was not a abuser. So non-abusing was he that she fled back to the UK when their daughter was only two months old. He came to the UK to see his daughter when she was two and JK took out a restraining order against him. That’s precisely how non-abusing he was

FliesandPies · 12/06/2020 01:29

Oh give over! You put your opinion out there, expect to have it challenged or disagreed with - which is exactly what they (Harry Potter stars) did! They weren't abusive. Just disagreed. Like people are allowed to do,

These are people who owe their immense wealth and public profile to JKR's writings and who know her personally. By wading into the storm of debate and abuse in the way they did, they knew they would get the full force of everyone's attention.

Instead of saying anything at all in recognition of that, even if going on to disagree, or denouncing the violent abuse being targeted at her, they chose to try to negate her opinions, humiliate her, in the case of Radcliffe actually dare to apologise on her behalf to her readers - arrogant arsehole!

Evanna Lynch, who at one time stated that Rowling helped her to recover from anorexia, denounced Rowling as irresponsible - that's not just 'disagreeing'.

Pugdoglife · 12/06/2020 01:37

@user1473878824

“ So suddenly it's ok to "only slap" your partner?“ that’s not what the headline is saying. It’s saying the absolute opposite. Jesus Christ.
I meant the person to whom she was married has that view!
BigBadVoodooHat · 12/06/2020 01:39

This is a stealthy show of support for JKR, not a celebration or ‘publicization’ of her ex.

They could have put a positive spin on it by having him defend himself and rebut the accusations.

Instead, he’s damned himself and obliquely given credit to everything she said in her essay.

There’s a swipe at that simpleton Emma Watson immediately below too, just to make it more obvious.

This is a sneaky show of support for JKR via implication rather than explication.

And I say this as someone who utterly loathes The Sun.

Willow2017 · 12/06/2020 01:43

They weren't abusive. Just disagreed. Like people are allowed to do,

They jumped on the bandwagon to be seen to be such understanding sensitive souls. and for the publicity By doing so they condoned the death threats and vile abuse already given to JKR.
Do they think because she made them famous they have a right to shout her down?
Who the fuck does DR think he is 'apologising' on behalf of an adult woman? Stupid little prick. I have seen him interviewed more than once and he always comes over as trying way too hard to be witty and clever and fails miserably. He actually comes over as thick as mince.

Its "Irresponsible" to state biological facts? This from some child actor who doesnt seem to have grown up enough yet to understand what it means to be a woman in a misogynistic world. Telling a woman who has such traumatic life experiences how to speak? Do feck off you silly girl.

Tinkerbell456 · 12/06/2020 01:43

A charmer eh?

colouringindoors · 12/06/2020 09:54

Still feeling Angry this morning. Some real hypocrites popping up on social media funnily enough. So many failed to condemn the torrent of abuse she had online, but are now criticising The Sun.

Yes. Hello Owen Jones.

AnnieCartwright · 12/06/2020 11:31

@HeddaGarbled

Actually, I think they’ve given him a platform to out himself as a domestic abuser and confirm her story.
I agree. They gave him the rope and he hanged himself.
colouringindoors · 12/06/2020 12:49

I don't disagree with Hedda.

But for JK seeing that admission and total lack of contrition on the front page I would guess is further abuse.

HappyPunky · 12/06/2020 12:52

Has Daniel Radcliffe apologised to him? Or does he just apologise to online abusers?

SockYarn · 12/06/2020 12:52

I'm more surprised that people weren't aware it was a shitrag already. I'm old enough to remember what they said in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster. Disgusting publication.

bluebluezoo · 12/06/2020 12:54

Actually, I think they’ve given him a platform to out himself as a domestic abuser and confirm her story

I agree. As pp said they’ve handed him the rope...

Also the “put the boot in” comment- i also read that as supportive- to me that means kicking someone when they’re down, so radcliffe et all have joined in the crowds bashing her rather than saying anything meaningful, iyswm...

Chicchicchicchiclana · 12/06/2020 12:55

I agree with HeddaGarbled. It's horrible but quite clever.

Pelleas · 12/06/2020 12:56

I really, really dislike the attitude that because Person A has starred in a film based on Person B's book, Person A has to publicly agree with every viewpoint that Person B might express.

MrsHound · 12/06/2020 13:39

Why on earth would anyone still buy or read the S*n?
They lie. They are scum.
Bet they cried down their leg about Caroline Flack.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 12/06/2020 14:13

To be honest, anyone still reading The S-n and any of the other red tops need to take a good look at themselves.

FliesandPies · 12/06/2020 14:35

I really, really dislike the attitude that because Person A has starred in a film based on Person B's book, Person A has to publicly agree with every viewpoint that Person B might express.

Is there such a view? You've quoted me but I didn't say they had to 'publicly agree'. I said they shouldn't have waded into the attack on her, seeing how vicious and obscene it had become. In Radcliffe's case he even dared to apologise for the effect her opinions might have on fans of her books!

If they wanted to disagree they could have done it in some way that acknowledge their debt to JKR, showing respect and the fact they know her personally and presumably had some affection for her.

Crystaltree · 12/06/2020 14:40

Sun said it was a 'sick taunt'. They proved JK right by sending someone to nobble him in Portugal (not an easy matter atm) and let him sound off and admit he did it (not easy to get people to come out with incriminating stuff like that). Yeah it's written up in a trashy way. But it reaches a lot of men, which is important. No point moaning in our lady echo chamber and expecting things to change.

YangShanPo · 12/06/2020 14:45

This is a stealthy show of support for JKR, not a celebration or ‘publicization’ of her ex.

It definitely is. People were saying it's very convenient for JK to just now come out with a sob story about being abused (which she had never talked about before) just when she is getting a lot of criticism and this proves how true her story is.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/06/2020 14:51

This is the front page. It's vile. Oh no it isn't! You only have to see Lil Owen's response to see it's a fucking great headline!

Cue lots of backing up and reframing of the usual TRA blather from other similar pontificators!

He has hoist himself by his own petard... wait for the scramble as other Lil Owens leap aside!

TheGoogleMum · 12/06/2020 14:53

Yes I think the consensus that it's stealth support for JKR might be the case. I still don't think it's nice and is risky (could make abusers feel like a slap is totally fine). I hate the way JKR has been treated by everyone. I've deactivated my Twitter if you don't agree 100% with the activists they all turn on you (I dared suggest that people threatening sexual violence were damaging for their cause and that although I'm not sure excluding trans women from bathrooms is the answer I don't want victims of domestic abuse to feel unsafe either)

PrimalLass · 12/06/2020 14:57
www.ipso.co.uk/complain/
And while you are at it report Pink News and Owen Jones, who have accused her of weaponising her trauma.

Siablue · 12/06/2020 15:15

I can’t work out how to complain about Owen Jones comments to IPSO it seems that the Guardian isn’t on there.

His behaviour is the most shameful example of gaslighting there is. He is now denying it and posting comments about domestic abuse victims.

I hate the Sun but as someone who has a very similar story to JK Rowling I do feel that they have allowed people to see what an awful shit her ex husband is.
