To ask you to help with a complaint about the sickening front page of tomorrow’s Sun

116 replies

Subsume · 11/06/2020 23:29

My first AIBU

Please don’t give the sun any clicks - I’ll attempt to post a photo of tomorrow’s horrific front page.

Flowers to anyone this tiggers. It’s truly awful.

“I slapped JK And I’m not sorry.Sun confronts her 1st husband”

Any advice on the best way to frame a complaint to IPSO? I think it would come under several categories, harassment, privacy, victims of sexual assault.

This is a new low.

@peachypeche

I think perhaps the OP's fear is that someone buys this, sits down in the canteen or on the site or wherever, has a look at the headline and thinks "yeah maybe she deserved it"

I don't think the 'Weatherspoons male Sun-readers' (previously described) would want to beat up JK for (being wilfully misunderstood as) not having respect for transgender women. I would imagine said Sun readers are particularly unlikely to have respect for transgender women.

I can't quite find what it is JK said that set all this off. Was it something along the lines that she was a genetic female and the experiences of her life as that were something that a transgender woman, originally genetically male, couldn't have in the same way?

Yes, that would have set the cat among the pigeons.

And created quite a twitter.

I never said the Weatherspoons lot would want to beat up JK for the trans issue due to the headline.

I meant that someone could sit down and read this and just jokingly, or otherwise say to other men something crass that endorses such behaviour in general. Nothing to do with the current debacle - clearly the incident with her ex pre-dates such things.

Sindragosan · 12/06/2020 08:20

Anyone I know who reads the Sun or Mail, although they may be sexist, they're pretty much all anti-trans. I still can't see much support for that headline, it will come under 'stuff that doesn't need spoken about'

ArriettyJones · 12/06/2020 08:21

How? He has literally confirmed her account and shown himself to be an abusive arsehole. How can that harm JKR? It helps her.

Of course it can harm her! "I only slapped her once" is the slogan of many an abuser.

It’s a deluded “slogan”. In reality, it’s a confession. She isn’t harmed by it, she’s vindicated.

monkeyonthetable · 12/06/2020 08:27

I just don't get it. I have friends - totally sane, independent women who loathe JKR because of her stance on women being women. Look at that ranting, insane abuse on Twitter. How can anyone say she is the irrational hater/ They are saying the sun is the moon. they are haters - bluntly clear from their violent threats. She is rational, balanced and not anti-trans. Just anti the erosion of women as a real,. biological entity.

monkeyonthetable · 12/06/2020 08:29

Sorry - that post was barely coherent. I was so shocked. There she was being balanced and fair and not in any way abusive or anti trans rights. There's a torrent of really violent abuse against her, attacking her for being and saying things she just isn't guilty of.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 12/06/2020 08:33

too little news elsewhere, apart from Coronovirus and BLM

Soontobe60 · 12/06/2020 08:36

@FliesandPies

I posted on the other thread (when OP posts an image the front page it should make it clearer) that they are making a cack-handed attempt to support JKR
No, it's all about the money. If it were in support of her, they wouldn't have made it all about him and posted his photo. Shame on them for thinking this was newsworthy, and shame on anyone who thinks a perpetrator of DV should get any publicity.
Soontobe60 · 12/06/2020 08:39

@Nonotthatdr

It’s horrid. I can’t quite believe I’m defending these rags but they are supporting her. She’s been accused of making it all up - they have given her abuser enough rope to hang himself. Let these men say this shit in public so all those that say it dosent happen have to admit it does
They could have interviewed him and justvpassed their recording of he interview on to the police.
Bearsinmotion · 12/06/2020 08:44

I don’t know, in the context of JK’s blogpost this could be seen as aligning those critical of JK with domestic abusers - really not a good look for the young Woke brigade lauding the TRA position. Especially if the also see the twitter abuse aimed at a survivor of male violence...

Soontobe60 · 12/06/2020 08:44

@MrMeSeeks

*This is a new low, even for The Sun Surely being pro-domestic violence is quite a hard position to sell?* But they’re they’re not? They’re clearly supporting her? Confused
If you had been raped, and were faced with your rapist plastered across the papers for the whole world to see, would you think 'or good, everything men will see him for what he is now' and go about your day happy?
Imissmoominmama · 12/06/2020 08:45

This is the sun riding piggyback on what they perceive to be her ‘anti trans statement’- they wouldn’t have sought him out at any other time.

Except her statement wasn’t anti trans- it was anti the erosion of women.

The Sun is still a rag I wouldn’t wipe my arse on.

BarbieandKenBruce · 12/06/2020 08:46

The problem is an abuser's boast is a front page headline of a national newspaper. It's not 'J K Rowling was telling the truth' or in any way supportive of her.
Yes its evidence of her being in abusive marriage. But the fact its her abuser being given the time and space to confirm that in this way rather than even The Sun putting a bit of distance between his words by reporting on them rather than just using them in that way, who is it centering? JK or her ex-husband? And the fact its a prideful boast as the headline is awful. It's normalising that and whether unintentionally or intentionally putting it across as a legitimate view point by the nature of it being the headline rather than anything condemning it or DV or anything supportive of JKR. Also it's implies men need to confirm they were perpetrators of DC for their victim's words to carry any weight.
Abusive rhetoric has no place as a front page headline. It does validate it for some horrible people.
I don't know The Sun that well but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have a racist slur as a standalone headline, they'd say something like 'bla bla caught out in racial slur'. The distance between reporting on it and reprinting verbatim is important.

Soontobe60 · 12/06/2020 08:47

@SaskiaRembrandt

BatShite you're conflating two separate audiences. The people in the screenshots in the Medium piece are not the sort of people the Sun article is aimed at. They twitter mob won't read the Sun, in fact they'd look down at anyone who did.

I loathe the Sun, I will never forgive the so-called newspaper for the way it covered Hillsborough, but even I can see that this piece is sympathetic to JK Rowling, and that people who continue to condemn her are literally siding with a self declared abuser. Which really isn't a good look.

So why was this trending on twitter last night?
DoingMyOwnThing · 12/06/2020 08:47

Pro domestic violence

I'm pro JK - she is being villified, harrased, threatened with murder/rape for her comments.

BarbieandKenBruce · 12/06/2020 08:48

@Soontobe60 Yes. 'She was asking for it' said Mr X, 45 from Sometown.
Who does that support?
It's appalling.

RuffleCrow · 12/06/2020 08:51

It's the tone of the headline that's the problem: it's the refrain of violent men everywhere: She Deserved It. Exactly the kind of men who buy The Scum.

RuffleCrow · 12/06/2020 08:54

I'm taking a break from this madness today. My heart is breaking for what she's being subjected to from all angles. Hopefully when I return to MN tomorrow, several high profile people will have leapt to her defence.

Cam2020 · 12/06/2020 08:58

WTF. What a guy - but he is showing himself up to be the arsehole he is, its not as though they're condoning it. If that attitude was normal it wouldn't be shocking enough to sell papers, would it?

She chose public life, she chose to speak out about him, he has the right to reply.

derxa · 12/06/2020 09:03

Hopefully when I return to MN tomorrow, several high profile people will have leapt to her defence. Hopefully but most 'high profile people' don't want to get involved in this. They know it will harm their careers. Fern Britton yesterday on Jeremy Vine flogging a book. She said she didn't want to get involved but it was clear she didn't support JKR. It made me really angry.

TorkTorkBam · 12/06/2020 09:07

Outside the Twittersphere and MN very few people know what's going on with TRAs and JKR.

Front page news of The Sun has a vile headline that will have people talking and reading on.

It will bring the disinfecting effect of sunlight.

The twitter anime avatars and beardies will shout abuse at her no matter what. I don't worry about fueling their ability to spin the story.

The general public seeing this? Now that's going to drive awareness, which is good. The more debate the better.

frumpety · 12/06/2020 09:07

He can't be awfully bright can he ? Not sure how much the Sun paid him to out himself as an unrepentent wifebeater, but everytime someone googles his name, that front page will come up for a very long time.

PulseFinger · 12/06/2020 09:15

If anyone does want to complain, I’ve just done so on the IPSO website - they have an online complaints form. For me, this is completely separate from Rowling’s stance on trans issues - The Sun have pursued an abuser for the purpose of publishing a statement promoting violence against women on their front page. Misogyny, pure and simple. Doesn’t surprise me, I wouldn’t wipe my arse with The Sun in any case.

I take the point many of you have been making about it being ‘reporting’, and that it’s given her abuser rope to hang himself.

It still makes me feel sick, that it’s salacious and gossipy, it’s not good enough to say oh that’s what The Sun does.

I fear many people will see it and not be able to read to between the lines. ‘One slap? She maybe deserved it’

Thanks all for your considered comments though.

@HeddaGarbled

They’re reporting it, not supporting it.
Theyre profiting from it
