To ask you to help with a complaint about the sickening front page of tomorrow’s Sun

Subsume · 11/06/2020 23:29

My first AIBU

Please don’t give the sun any clicks - I’ll attempt to post a photo of tomorrow’s horrific front page.

Flowers to anyone this tiggers. It’s truly awful.

“I slapped JK And I’m not sorry.Sun confronts her 1st husband”

Any advice on the best way to frame a complaint to IPSO? I think it would come under several categories, harassment, privacy, victims of sexual assault.

This is a new low.

Oh yeah, well at least one would hope that normal people are sympathetic over it.

I guess I spend way too much time reading MRA types, and have an inkling that he will be amazing to them. Hope I am wrong though.

Think I will avoid the cesspit that is twitter for a few days actually.

I feel so awful for Jo, these past few days, and while this guy is admitting what he did, it still must be awful for her and her family to have to go through this :(

quantumdog · 12/06/2020 02:59

Oh please. 🙄 I hate this rag as much as the next person. But that's a quote and they are reporting, not supporting.

quantumdog · 12/06/2020 03:05

@BatShite Sorry...but where does it say that they're all men again?

BatShite · 12/06/2020 03:10

Mainly men. Not all.

Worst display of toxic masculiity I have ever seen in one place tbh.

TehBewilderness · 12/06/2020 04:03

Do you find it odd how the news whether tabloids or mainstream always center the perps in stories about male violence against women.
Unless she is a celebrity they don't even say her name. Just his wife, or his girlfriend, or his neighbor found dead and he is in custody.

YinMnBlue · 12/06/2020 04:41

The TRAs will be tweeting it and as they typically talk about ‘punching TERFs’ they will use it to threaten violence against JK.

I dare say the ostensible approach by the Sun is anti domestic violence but this arguably glamorises it.

Bluemoooon · 12/06/2020 05:20

Ha, no domestic violence 'but I did slap her' - sums up misogyny perfectly.
Why is it wrong to publish it - I don't understand your complaint.

CareBear50 · 12/06/2020 05:42

No idea why OP is complaining about this. Very odd. Looks to me like the Sun is saying her ex is in the wrong, from their headline?

Cadent · 12/06/2020 05:42

It reminds me of the Mexican paper that published on its front page a picture of a young woman stabbed, skinned and disemboweled by her husband with was what meant to be a funny headline - ‘It was Cupid’s fault!’, implying the husband killed her because he loved her.

Different scenarios but very suspect motivation all the same.

SaskiaRembrandt · 12/06/2020 05:56

BatShite you're conflating two separate audiences. The people in the screenshots in the Medium piece are not the sort of people the Sun article is aimed at. They twitter mob won't read the Sun, in fact they'd look down at anyone who did.

I loathe the Sun, I will never forgive the so-called newspaper for the way it covered Hillsborough, but even I can see that this piece is sympathetic to JK Rowling, and that people who continue to condemn her are literally siding with a self declared abuser. Which really isn't a good look.

SophocIestheFox · 12/06/2020 05:58

It’s a vile headline. And the sun will fuel the fires of those wishing hate and harm on JKR, because they are now going to believe the word of this man that it was “only a couple of slaps”. If they wanted to expose him, there would be more in the article about what domestic abuse actually looks like, and perhaps explain that abusers, somewhat fucking obviously, rarely admit to being abusers.

Well played, Sun, slow fucking handclap.

The only possible good that can come out of this is that it’s so horribly misogynist it backfires and generates more support for this poor woman.

GinDaddyRedux · 12/06/2020 06:09

Sympathies to anyone to whom this headline from the Sun triggers.

My personal belief however is that this is designed to expose the horrendous, callous, heartless position of JK's ex.

It's as simple as that really. The Sun could have written an editorial banner at the top saying "We speak to JK's cruel ex who showed NO remorse" or whatever - @Subsume would that have made it clearer as to their position?

I think perhaps the OP's fear is that someone buys this, sits down in the canteen or on the site or wherever, has a look at the headline and thinks "yeah maybe she deserved it" Angry which is exactly the attitude that perpetuates this disgraceful thing in the first place.

I personally think that most people have enough judgement to recognise that this guy is being hung out to dry by his own words. But there could be a few who see it the way I just said.

From a JK Rowling privacy perspective, I think this is just reporting on something in the public domain. They're not supporting his perspective.

ChateauMargaux · 12/06/2020 06:17

I haven't read the article but this is awful. For years she has sought to protect her daughter from the details of her first marriage and in revealing an intimate part of her story she has exposed herself for the sun journalists to track this man down and belittle the impact his 'slap' had on her by giving him a voice in this story. The 'I gave her a slap because she deserved it' is so utterly hateful and belittling of women. This is not a supportive piece.

Oblomov20 · 12/06/2020 06:20

That is really bad. Why does the sun need to interview him? We all know her history. It doesn't need this. He's a right tool isn't he? Lord knows why he agreed to he interviewed, if indeed he did!

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 12/06/2020 06:21

I agree, that the reporting it, it surely isnt intended to make people believe that he was Good to slap her,?

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 12/06/2020 06:23

It does say The Sun Confronts the Ex Husband.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 12/06/2020 06:28

if you read the article it does not condone his behaviour

Piglet89 · 12/06/2020 06:31

People who aren’t sorry:

  1. JKR’s ex; and
  2. Dominic Cummings.

#notmovingon

Noconceptofnormal · 12/06/2020 06:38

It's called journalism, they're printing his side of the story, where in fairness he seems to corroborate that he's a horror of a human being.

I really don't understand what you want to complain about.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 12/06/2020 06:40

journalism?
he obviously didnt even want to talk.
not really a scoop

TooSadToSay · 12/06/2020 06:45

Wow. Sorry you had to put up with this piece of shit JK. You deserved better. At least he's exposed himself for the vile human he is, for all to see.

AnnaNimmity · 12/06/2020 06:54

It's vile. Really vile.

Quarantimespringclean · 12/06/2020 06:57

I don’t buy the Sun and I never will but I don’t think reporting the words of an abuser is the same as condoning the abuse. Anymore than reporting the words of a Nazi sympathiser or KKK member makes a writer or publisher a Nazi or white supremicist.

IMO what The Sun have done here is supported JKR in confirming that the abuse actually happened and given her abuser the rope to hang himself. They certainly haven’t supported or defended her unrepentant abuser.

TitianaTitsling · 12/06/2020 07:01

@Piglet89 why the need to bring covid politics into a domestic violence discussion?

araiwa · 12/06/2020 07:02

Complain about what?

Its the only decent thing shitty tabloids do- exposing arseholes
