2020 Sucks (redundancy)

My work started the first big wave today, over 1000 redundancies. My role is at risk, 3 roles going to 1. So either I win and lose friends, or lose and lose job. It just sucks. And I think all worse as we’re all remote working. A competitor I hear gave notice to a similar numbe today too, turns out (I think?) if it’s more than 100 people then it’s a 45 day consultation, which starts today, and ends end of July, right before they need to start topping up the furlough. I’m not even on furlough!!! But they say they won’t be able to afford it so their getting rid of people now to cut the costs in 45 days time.
It bloody sucks.
Fucking coronavirus.

It’s going to be a very tough time for many people. My cousin has been told she is being made redundant. Been in the job all her life so at 48 is going to struggle as the industry is going to be hammered. She will get a pay off but it won’t last forever and she will never earn what she does now.

Fruitbatdancer · 11/06/2020 23:56

I think a lot of people are in for a shock, as I watch the news, watch the market, knew things were bad etc, but a lot of people still seem to think furlough makes it all better? It doesn’t? It just delays it. I
And I’m ok, I mean we’ll manage if worst happens, but I know people that aren’t so lucky, it’s actually the mental health aspect that’s so frightening. As a global pandemic and redundancy are not a happy mix.

I tallied up the announced redundancies in the British Press...roughly 22000 jobs gone so far... and it's going to get worse. It's particularly bad for the younger, less skilled employees.

Aclh13 · 12/06/2020 02:34

If I were you I'd apply to a few roles online just to be ahead of the game just incase

Aclh13 · 12/06/2020 02:36

I was laid off at the start of corona and I'm in the vulnerable group which my workplace knew (I took a gap year from uni to gain work experience) I now have no choice financially but to Continue on with my studies in October and hopefully eventually gain part time work come christmas time

startalovetrain · 12/06/2020 03:04

I worked for a company than announced thousands of losses today. In fact I went through 5 "rounds" of redundancies over 4 years. You are right, the toll on your mental health is shocking, even if you know you'll be ok financially.

I lost chunks of hair with stress, and when I did eventually get let go, it took me a long time to realise I didn't have to justify every single thing I did to justify my existence to my new employer. The grey cloud hanging over you and your colleagues is awful - just sending thoughts to you OP! It's going to be tough for a lot of people, but it does get better on the other side eventually.

People on here were shrieking that you needed to stay indoors and that going to the supermarket more than once a week was murder. Anybody questioning the upcoming financial crash was putting money before people and were advocating murder. That was the Mumsnet narrative earlier on in lockdown.

I’m very sorry that millions of people are losing their jobs but you can’t have it both ways.

PhilCornwall1 · 12/06/2020 06:12

@FluffyKittensinabasket

Agree, the obvious is now happening and it's horrible, but it should come as no surprise.

It's a worrying situation that could be seen coming a mile off, to me far more worrying than the virus itself and I feel will have a far worse outcome for many.

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 12/06/2020 06:54

YANBU - I lost mine a week into lockdown
And I worked for a massive global company. No consultation period, just letter of redundancy. 😔 they didn’t offer furlough to us. Nearly 100 people from my site 😔
And I still don’t see the point of lockdown, social distancing and trying to save the NHS at this level of economical cost
Surely they should have weighed the majority

Needallthesleep · 12/06/2020 08:10

My work have just announced that they are starting the redundancy process. I expect at least 1,000 job losses. I’m terrified as I’m 6 months pregnant so no-one will employ me. It’s the mental health aspect as well as the financial aspect that I know I’m going to really struggle with.

Magicra84 · 12/06/2020 09:03

I was made redundant last week from a job I love and it's truly shit but from a few days ago I thought onwards and upwards. You'll be ok either way and friends who don't speak to you if you do stay in your job, then are they true friends? xx

Polowithoutahole · 12/06/2020 09:08

My work announced a review of redundancy a few weeks back, we should find out next week who is for the door. I'm terrified as I'm a single parent, and I won't be able to get another job if I lose mine as nobody will hire someone who can't get to work because the schools aren't open. It sucks.

Tobias1985 · 13/06/2020 11:29

With employers being asked to contribute towards furlough costs from August I think many people will be getting made redundant over the next few weeks. I work in travel and we have been told redundancies are likely.. this year can get in the bin!
