To think they’re better off dead?

The main characters in action films?.... As the film goes on they spend most of their time being chased from the bad guys who end up killing everyone in their path to get to them.

Surely the main character is better off just handing themselves in... it would save many innocent lives.

I always feel sorry for the other drivers/pedestrians who get caught up in car chases (E.g. Bond), and cops who are just going about their job then get shot whilst Tom Cruise runs away!

AIBU??

to be fair, when it's a Hero and lots of "collateral damage" it's usually because he's attempting to Save The World, or at the very least America, so his death wouldn't actually save the other people long-term.

Marvel did actually do a nod to all of this, with the rules and treaty about enhanced people and so forth, although they basically viewed it as another weapon in The Villains' arsenal, so...

merryhouse · 11/06/2020 23:03

... oh and of course that's the whole premise behind The Incredibles Grin

merryhouse · 11/06/2020 23:04

crosspost - ooh yeah, come the apocalypse I'm basically screwed (especially now I'm too old to be of any interest to Big Man) so no point even trying really

Asthenia · 11/06/2020 23:07

This is why I hate action films! So stressful. I also really hate fight scenes/seeing things get smashed up 😂

Saladmakesmesad · 11/06/2020 23:11

Yes! I clearly have a lack of ambition as I think this too. And massive heists where they are running from someone/something and the adrenaline is sky high I think, 'You could just hand yourselves in and end this now'.

Pumperthepumper · 11/06/2020 23:12

Yes! Surely the worst of this kind are the disposable stormtroopers- especially when we meet Flynn and learn more about them!

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 11/06/2020 23:14

@KaronAVyrus

I think these films would be massively improved if the baddies improved their accuracy when shooting.
Yes to this. I blame the stormtroopers in Star Wars.

OP, I said exactly the same thing to DP when we binge watched Taboo last weekend. An awful lot of innocent people died so the not-very-nice Tom Hardy character could keep his allotment. Why? Confused

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 11/06/2020 23:15

X-post @Pumperthepumper!

FlatCheese · 11/06/2020 23:16

I have a theory that the James Bond name goes with the 007 title. You get a new 00 agent when the old one dies, so my theory is that the name is also passed on, because it's designed to blend in and not be too memorable.

That means that there could have been lots of "James Bonds" and actually he's not a single (but really lucky) secret agent, they just get another one when he comes up against a competent bad guy i.e. one that doesn't just point a gun at him and then explain the plot, rather than pulling the trigger.

Sidge · 11/06/2020 23:16

Oh I love a mindless action movie. The more explosions, car chases and fights the better.

I especially love it when a dozen bad guys pitch up and take it in turns to beat up the good guy. They NEVER all pile in at once!

Yes! When they all wait politely in a nice line to throw a punch 😂

CandyLeBonBon · 11/06/2020 23:18

I'll see your piece of rope and a penknife, pp and raise you a paper clip and an emery board

CandyLeBonBon · 11/06/2020 23:18

Oh and a piece of chewing gum

Frozenfan2019 · 11/06/2020 23:21

DD is 12 so it is entirely possible Makka Pakka has found his soulmate in more recent series, but I doubt it

Oh a love interest for makka pakka... How about colly wobble?

(You won't know who he/she is as your child is big now)

I now feel really sorry for makka pakka, maybe his cleaning everybody with a sponge is an awkward way of trying to make friends.

CandyLeBonBon · 11/06/2020 23:22

@FlatCheese that's what I've always thought too

I think you totally misunderstand the nature of Upsy Daisy and Igglepiggles relationship... I mean her bed follows her around. I figured it might even be a professional (as in the 'oldest' one) relationship.

Disclaimer: DD1 is 11. It's entirely possible I'm wrong and they got married and everything.

elliejjtiny · 11/06/2020 23:28

That's why the original series of star trek infuriates me. Away team beam down, guy in red shirt either gets killed by an alien or touches a poisonous plant and dies. I just want to shout "look where you're going and don't touch anything" at the tv.

dialmformmmm · 11/06/2020 23:33

@elfycat

Is that why she's called Upsy Daisy? Is it an instruction?

Too far?

NoMoreDickheads · 11/06/2020 23:36

Aw but they escape in the end.

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 11/06/2020 23:38

There’s that Austin Powers movie where they go into that whole thing of the random security guy at the bad guy’s lair who gets killed... and they show the phone call to his wife, his kid saying “Mummy, where’s Daddy?” etc!

A good friend is a stuntman and regularly features as one of the many random blokes getting blown up/shot/stabbed.

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 11/06/2020 23:40

Imagine being a Bond girl. You’re basically going to get shagged and die aren’t you?

KaronAVyrus · 11/06/2020 23:41

I’ve long felt James Bond is a liability and should be transferred to a desk job.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 11/06/2020 23:41

I love a trashy action movie. Especially starring Dwayne Johnson. Fancied him since I was a teenager, and he's a genuinely nice person too. He knows his niche and he does it well.

The Expendables series are a marvellous example of a trashy action movie. Great for when I just want a bit of excitement and a laugh, but mostly something to have on in the background whilst I do something else.

That scene in Austin Powers is brilliant.

DH had a wierd thing for Upsy Daisy (he mentioned a costume several times!) and also insisted that the fact she brought a bed with her everywhere meant she was totally up for it...

I worry about him.

Totally agree, OP, about thinking about all the random people who end up getting killed in many of these films and feeling like the main character should not be surviving. Especially when they aren't saving the world, but just like one person (often the female lead).
