The Postman.....

Lollypop4 · 11/06/2020 14:40

Just knocked on my door & before I could answer , which wouldve been almost imediately, he opened my door and put letters in on door mat...

Usually, my door is locked but my oldest DC is out on a walk.
I also have 2 indoor cats, that would possibly have got out...

This has happened to my parents before, different postman though, he opened their door- despite a post box which is on the outside of their gate, even if he had to come to door, there is a letter box on door too.
The family dog went nuts barking at him, he complained about our dog to the depo manager!!

AIBU to think the postman has no right to do just open my front door?
Do I report to the local depo?

To add, we do have a perfectly working letter box !!!

He shouldn’t have done it but let this be a lesson to keep doors locked at all times.

PumpkinP · 11/06/2020 15:03

Wouldn’t it be easier to just lock your door?

UnfinishedSymphon · 11/06/2020 15:04

He shouldn't have done it, imagine if you had a dog that ran out when he did.

Every day this week I've had junk mail delivered by the postman, despite a sign on the door, I'm surprised this is still occurring during lockdown, should be addressed mail only

ZaraW · 11/06/2020 15:06

YABU not to lock your door.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/06/2020 15:10

Of course YANBU, who the hell would just open the door, unless you're a burglar! Our front door isn't always locked but the postie has never just opened it, that's ridiculous.

Floatyboat · 11/06/2020 15:13

Presumably the door was ajar so don't really see the issue.

YeahWhatevver · 11/06/2020 15:15

Could your door have been slightly open (DC not pulled it shut)?

TheThingWithFeathers · 11/06/2020 15:17

Honestly, pick your battles. Don't report him, just lock your door.

Givingup123456 · 11/06/2020 15:17

Had this with Amazon the other day. I saw the van so unlocked the door waiting for him to put it down on the doorstep and step back. Then I would open the door. Instead he just opened my door and looked surprised that I was there and said sorry put it down and closed the door. I was so surprised. I only unlocked my door to receive the parcel wasn't expecting him to let himself in! But I left it as I normally have the door locked and CBA with the hassle as I use Amazon regularly

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 11/06/2020 15:21

My postman keeps an eye out for my elderly parents. He also delivers parcels addressed to me to my parents‘ house if he knows I’m at work.

Quite frankly he can come in and make himself a cup of tea if he wants because he goes over and above to help in our community.

I appreciate not all communities are like that, but I still wouldn’t want to get someone In trouble at work when they were only trying to help.

amylou8 · 11/06/2020 15:21

Was the door ajar or opened by the force of him knocking? Could he have thought it was an outer door to a porch? Seems a bit weird, but not something I could get upset about.

pooopypants · 11/06/2020 15:21

If your door is usually locked, why would he even think to try it to see if it isn't? Sounds to me like the door was slightly ajar.

Lock your door. Problem solved.

Happynow001 · 11/06/2020 15:25

Lock your door OP - your DC can ring in their return or, if old enough, give them a key.

I've also had postmen and Amazon/other delivery drivers regularly try and open my front door with barely a cursory ring and they seem annoyed not to be able to get in as my door is kept locked. Also think - it might not be someone delivering to you next time..

Sparklesocks · 11/06/2020 15:27

Was the door already open or closed?

Butterbeeeen · 11/06/2020 15:30

The pharmacy delivery driver did this to me recently as well. My DC were left in the house on their own (totally old enough to be left before I get flamed) but they are told not to answer the door. He knocked and obviously they didnt answer so he opened the door threw in my prescription and left. Very bizarre. Didnt report him however as children found it amusing and I do know exactly who he is and where he works so what exactly was he going to do.

birthdaybelle · 11/06/2020 15:30

Instead of complaining just ask him not to do it when you see him. He could be supporting a family with that job... don't be a dick

HouchinBawbags · 11/06/2020 15:30

I don't mind it. It's very told our posties to pop it just through the door but I have a separated off front door. A foyer? Porch?
But no they shouldn't do it, especially when there are alternatives such as a letterbox or an external postbox

LadyFeliciaMontague · 11/06/2020 15:37

Our postie took to doing this. He was new to our round. He’d knock, open the door then pop the letters/packages inside.
I always have the door locked, DH always left it unlocked but is now more careful.

VenusTiger · 11/06/2020 15:39

Why are your cats indoor OP?
If your DC is old enough to go for a walk alone, he's old enough to take a key.
Your cats, your responsibility. Postal worker just being kind.

SlothRunner · 11/06/2020 15:58

Why shouldn’t her cats be indoors????
Aloethere · 11/06/2020 16:03

Meh, my postie leaves packages in my hallway all the time. It's not like they are robbing the place, they open the door, throw package in, close door and leave. I can't see what harm it does.

Lollypop4 · 11/06/2020 16:06

@Floatyboat

Presumably the door was ajar so don't really see the issue.
It wasnt ajar, It was closed. But unlocked as My Dc was due back at any moment

480Widdio · 11/06/2020 16:15

Lesson to be learnt, don’t leave your front door open!!!

Presumably Postman thought the reason it was open was to leave deliveries.

Lollypop4 · 11/06/2020 16:19

Just to confirm, It was fully closed, he used the handle to open the door , I just found it odd that he knocked and before I had a chance to open (Honestly 10seconds max) he opened anyway.
Our car wasnt on the drive either, The house wouldve appeared empty.

My cats are indoor for safety, we live on a busy street, they do have full roam of house and a large catio at the back of our house too.

Usually, I lock the door after Dc goes out and he normally has to knock to come back in, today I didnt lock, I dont know why I didnt but certainly will now.

I will have a word with postman tomorrow and If he still attempts to open door, I will look to call the depo
