The Postman.....

Lollypop4 · 11/06/2020 14:40

Just knocked on my door & before I could answer , which wouldve been almost imediately, he opened my door and put letters in on door mat...

Usually, my door is locked but my oldest DC is out on a walk.
I also have 2 indoor cats, that would possibly have got out...

This has happened to my parents before, different postman though, he opened their door- despite a post box which is on the outside of their gate, even if he had to come to door, there is a letter box on door too.
The family dog went nuts barking at him, he complained about our dog to the depo manager!!

AIBU to think the postman has no right to do just open my front door?
Do I report to the local depo?

@480Widdio

Lesson to be learnt,don’t leave your front door open!!!

Presumably Postman thought the reason it was open was to leave deliveries.

It was closed but not locked. He used the door handle to open door.

It wouldn't overly bother me, but he shouldn't have done it. Our front door isn't locked during the day.

BigusBumus · 11/06/2020 16:36

@SlatternIsMyMiddleName I feel the same as you, Steve, our postman is lovely and opens my door and leaves post, I leave him fresh eggs from my hens. He would never take anything back to the depot but always leave it somewhere for me. He is the same with everyone in the whole village and everyone likes him immensely. He is diabetic and once was having a funny turn and I let him in and gave him a packet of biscuits to make him feel better.

We do live in a small village though where we are quite crime free and everyone knows each other in a good community way.

NancyPickford · 11/06/2020 16:51

I live in a very small village in quite a remote part of the country. My front door is unlocked all day, and if the postman has a parcel he will often open the door and put the parcel on the mat. I once got up in the morning to realise I had left both front and back doors unlocked all night. A friend staying from London nearly had a heart attack!

junecat · 11/06/2020 16:56

We are small village also and our postie does this with most of us, just opens the door and puts the parcel inside. If the door is locked and we are out he will put it inside a neighbours house for us.

CharmerLlama · 11/06/2020 16:59

So do you have a front door that doesn't lock when it's pulled shut? That would mean that it always has to be left unlocked whenever someone went out (if someone else in) as otherwise if they locked it from the outside, the person inside would be locked in. Would be safer to have a door that locks when pulled shut and everyone has a key to get back in.

Hopefully I've assumed wrong.

Crimblecrumble1990 · 11/06/2020 17:18

I find it bizarre a postman would just open your front door unless you have previously discussed that that's ok, my dog would go berserk if ours did that.

Also find it odd that people think you would need to lock your door to stop people just opening it. Ours is never locked during the day when we are home.

Lollypop4 · 11/06/2020 17:19

we have a door that has a simple barrel lock on the inside, when you close the door from inside, the only way to lock it , is turning the barrel lock, from outside pull close and use key to lock.
It has handles inside and out that ypu wiuld use to open and push door if that makes sense

Lollypop4 · 11/06/2020 17:22

Our village is safe I would say, If I forgot to lock it when out, It would be totally fine, everyone knows everyone on the street too.
I wasnt too worried about him stealimg anything but he only had letters , there was so need for him to even try to open the door.
We have 2 postmen, this is the 1st time he has opened the door.

I hope you said ‘Oh yes, wait a minute Mister Postman!!’ 🎵 🎶

Sorry OP couldn’t resist Grin

VenusTiger · 11/06/2020 21:12

@SlothRunner why can't I ask? Hmm

Rewis · 11/06/2020 21:36

Postman opening the door is not ok. Ita one thing if it's open wide but to try the handle is not cool at all.

SlothRunner · 11/06/2020 21:39
@SlothRunner why can't I ask? Hmm
Why is it relevant?

Rewis · 11/06/2020 21:39

That would mean that it always has to be left unlocked whenever someone went out

In my experoemce the doors that you have to locked with a key has the lock on both sides and the key can be used inside and out regardless of which way it has been locked.

Lancrelady80 · 11/06/2020 21:44

@UnfinishedSymphon

He shouldn't have done it, imagine if you had a dog that ran out when he did.

Every day this week I've had junk mail delivered by the postman, despite a sign on the door, I'm surprised this is still occurring during lockdown, should be addressed mail only

Quite a bit of what most people would consider junk mail IS addressed.

And the sign won't work at any time because the posties HAVE to deliver it - they can be disciplined if they don't, and ultimately it could cost them their job. The sign makes no difference. (But I think you can go to the sorting office/higher up the food chain to then be put on a list to stop receiving unaddressed mail.)

Not at all sure why postie did what he did though - presumably just trying to be helpful, but still! Try to catch them next time and just have a word to say you'd rather they didn't do that in the future

Lancrelady80 · 11/06/2020 21:45

@SlatternIsMyMiddleName

My postman keeps an eye out for my elderly parents. He also delivers parcels addressed to me to my parents‘ house if he knows I’m at work.

Quite frankly he can come in and make himself a cup of tea if he wants because he goes over and above to help in our community.

I appreciate not all communities are like that, but I still wouldn’t want to get someone In trouble at work when they were only trying to help.

This exactly!

Why report? Just ask to stop.

Nicolastuffedone · 11/06/2020 21:51

Why do people on MN always want to report somebody? It’s ridiculous.

zingally · 11/06/2020 21:52

That's so weird! I'd personally feel quite upset and violated if someone (even a postie in an "official" capacity) just let themselves into my house! But then I'm funny about strangers (especially men) in my home. Like, I'm super-uncomfortable when the boiler service man is here for instance!

But still, that's weird!

00Sassy · 11/06/2020 21:56

@UnfinishedSymphon you have to ‘opt out’ of receiving junk mail from Royal Mail.
There’s a form on the website.

If you don’t do this then they have to continue to post the mail.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 11/06/2020 22:04

I also find the 'report' culture very bizarre....have you got nothing better to worry about...let it go before it gives you an ulcer.

Lollypop4 · 11/06/2020 22:06

Would you not report a stranger who came up to your door, opened it and walked away?

OP posts:
myusernamewastakenbyme · 11/06/2020 22:11

Yes but the point is the postman is not a stranger he was delivering something to you....he wasnt there to rob you or cause you harm so why report him...get a grip.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 11/06/2020 22:16

My postman knocked the other day to tell me I'd left my keys hanging outside the front door.

2020times · 11/06/2020 22:16

Honestly I think the responses on here are weird. It's not ok to just open someone else's door?! And honestly, there is something .. almost victim blaming about the "well you should have locked your door then" responses. He just shouldn't have opened the door, it's weird and intrusive.

Ontheboardwalk · 11/06/2020 22:25

Lollypop4 it’s not ok

I can handle a lot of things, I even open the door if someone knocks, however an Amazon driver did this to me and I wasn’t happy

I could see they were 4 stops away so I went to kitchen to be close to the door. Was pottering about when without even knocking they opened the door

Why should I not be able to have my door unlocked in anticipation of a delivery. Why should anyone try your door without knocking first.
