To ask what is the point of Apple Pay

Apple Pay charges the card registered to it, right? So what is the advantage over just using the card? What am I not seeing here?

(I actually don’t use Apple Pay, not because of any philosophical stance, but because I’m too lazy to set it up on my new handset. Just use contactless cards at the moment)

Prime example left purse at work for 3 days. Used Apple Pay on phone to buy things. Lol

@Catastrofuck

I got money out before lockdown. Can’t give it away right now

I am the same, got £50 out of the bank in March. Still have £45 because everywhere (except the chippy) is asking for contactless where possible. Also filled the car with petrol then and it’s only just dipped below half a tank but that’s the WFH.

It’s brilliant / I have all my cards registered on it so I don’t take anything out apart from my phone. I can pay from whatever account I like - I have various accounts so would otherwise need to take all the cards with me. No wallet, and presumably more secure as no danger of losing my cards. No £45 limit, although that does depend on the retailer, they can restrict if they want.

If you have cash to get rid of there's usually a few self serves in each store still accepting cash. Need to ask the member of staff on duty which ones as they aren't always clearly marked til you try to start scanning.

I preferred the fingerprint option as on my latest phone I have to lean over, especially if the reader is flat on a counter or something. I don’t find face recognition as quick as the fingerprint option.

Not sure why you’re having to lean over? You do the face recognition before you put it anywhere near the reader. Double click the button, face recognition then move to the reader.

Yes, it’s great not having to carry anything except my phone.

I can even unlock my front door using just my phone, so no more having to carry keys around.

I love it and prefer using it on the thumbprint setting as DH has the newer facial recognition and says it’s not as good. It comes off the bank quicker than contactless. Money is disgusting and crawling with germs and many places ask that you don’t use physical cash right now.

I can see a move to a cash free world coming soon. I haven’t used cash in about a year. I get excited when I see Apple Pay online....dominos have apply pay.

@WhitbyGoth

And when the technology crashes, because one day it will, none of you will have access to your money! Always have cash on you.

Thanks mum Grin

Apple Pay transactions are tokenised which means a random number is generated instead of your credit card number. If there is a data breach at the shop the random number will show while your actual credit card number remains concealed. So it’s safer for security reasons also.
All chip transactions work like that; your actual card number is only sent to the terminal if you use the magnetic stripe.

TBH I am also wary of being over reliant on technology and usually have more than one means on me to pay for stuff. Just lately I just use my card (I don't have any Apple products, and I have never used my Android phone to pay for anything). But as my card fits nicely into my phone case it isn't a problem, so I still only take my phone out with me, plus a £1 coin for trolleys.

You can’t use chip online.

If "technology crashes" everyone will be in the same boat. Not much point having cash on you at the moment, no-one is accepting it.

It’s handy, I nip out all the time without my wallet. Or if I’m out for a run etc I always have my phone on me.

@Ginfordinner, you don't need £1 for the shopping trolley. Use the round part of a Yale door key - don't stab yourself on the business end of it though, while you're shopping.

I can see a move to a cash free world coming soon. I don't think so. Even Sweden who were moving towards this have reviewed their plans and are now making sure that there is resilience in the form of cash in their system.

Moving to a cash free world would really be putting all your eggs in one basket and leave you looking stupid when all the payment systems were hacked.

The visa/mastercard systems went down a couple of summers ago, and people at Fleet services who didn't have cash couldn't get a drink. I could....

Our village shop takes nothing but cash; and Tesco still takes cash, as do a couple of the smaller shops - Spar for example.

I’ve got one of these

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07WSKSXN8/ref=twister_B0879DXHM3?th=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

And I love it. It’s just a bit bigger than a credit card and about the thickness of a phone. You pull the lever at the bottom and your cards slide out a bit so you can choose the one you want, use it and stick it back in. It’s got room for folded banknotes as well.

I don’t understand the smuggery about cash.

If payment systems go down in any serious (long term or wide scale) way then we are all fucked. How long will having £20 in cash delay being fucked? A day?

Yeah in rare cases like the one above you might be able to buy a drink or whatever. But posters always catastrophise about the death of digital money, and act like they are immune. But if there’s a huge digital crash there will be tons of stuff, like mortgage payments, that can’t be made in cash. And actually if there really was a huge collapse cash would be worthless.

That is brilliant @Footle. It never occurred to me to do that. Thank you.

I can't understand the smuggery about cash either TheEmpressMatilda. We always have some in the house. It's how we pay the window cleaner for a start.

I don’t understand the “being uncontactable” smuggery wrt mobile phones. If I had the luxury of being able to choose whether I am contactable or not (I don’t - people need to be able to contact me and I them because I have dependents with particular needs) then I might leave my phone at home too. But I don’t, so it is convenient to minimise the amount of other stuff sometimes. Sometimes I even need to have my phone in my hand to avoid missing a call - one of those mothers “glued to her phone” who are so looked down on!

Yes because carrying random keys around is so much easier than keeping a £1 or a token in your car Grin

@TerrapinStation , my front door key is on the same key ring as my car key. Is that weird?
