Apple Pay charges the card registered to it, right? So what is the advantage over just using the card? What am I not seeing here?

I put it on then took it off and I'm always losing my phone. I tend not to lose my purse and cards.

It doesn't cost and I love it. Especially when I buy online I only have to use my finger print Grin. Also so easy in shops. Tap, done.

It’s much quicker when buying stuff online, and if you have an Apple Watch or your phone, it can be quicker and less of a faff than getting out a card.

Because I only need my phone

Also there's no contactless limit on AP

For me, the point was to pay for petrol on a long trip to a client after discovering I'd forgotten my purse. It was a real relief that day to have a way to pay.

@Abbccc be a bit heavy to carry £40 of coins around.

I always use my watch to pay. I live in a fairly rural area and it used to shock and amaze people when I did it 😂😂

I very rarely have any cash on me these days 🙂 I check my bank account regularly to keep on top of things.

I’m 50 and loving all the new technology! Makes my life so much easier 🙂

Before Covid ( when I started using my card) I'd keep notes in my bra pocket and I go out without my phone quite often.
I don't think I'm the target market either! Grin

It’s easier if like me you’ve always got your phone or if I don’t I’ve always got my watch on so I just need to take myself to wherever I’m going, no need to worry about purses or bank cards.

There’s no limit which is handy for shopping and It’s far quicker online just tap and you’re done.

I love it for all the reasons listed above. I use Monzo to keep track of my budgets in real time.

I have my bank account saved to Apple Pay, I also have my monzo and credit cards saved in Apple wallet together with my loyalty cards. I oils to tell you the last time I used a card or cash.

Great abroad with Starling Bank - no charges, everything taken out at local currency and converted back so I knew how much was left in my account.

Have you been paid by Apple to start this thread so everyone can say how marvellous it is grin

It's obvious that the advantage is that you don't need to carry cards around, I have no apple products at all and even I know that.

I generally have one or two loyalty cards (the ones that don't have an app) and my driving licence - I think I would need at least one card as a backup, so I wouldn't be getting a huge advantage - as for "fumbling about" - since I don't have an Apple Watch and I don't habitually walk around with my iPhone in my hand, I have to "fumble about" for anything - wallet/purse or phone. Also my iPhone is utter shite at recognising my thumbprint - it works about 25% of the time so I can't see the print security for higher value transactions working too well.

TL:DR I am not a huge Apple fan despite having a MacBook and an iPhone, but I was wondering if I was missing something on Apple Pay - it doesn't look as if I am.

It's brilliant, been using it for years and love it. I've just bought an Apple Watch recently and now it's even easier!

I use it all the time. I never take my purse out with me now. Apple Pay has no limits, unlike contactless cards. I also believe it to be safer, as it requires my fingerprint to make any payments - as opposed to my contactless card. Also tracks what I've spent too. Can be used online at a lot of online vendors too (similar to using Paypal), which means less faff putting in card details when I want to buy something online.

I didn’t realise Apple Pay was available on the old models with thumbprint.

Convenience. And just because it’s not convenient to you doesn’t make it pointless. At my old job it meant I could be waking around campus on between meetings and grab lunch from the food outlets without having to go back to the office to get my purse.

Does anyone ever have any issues with poor signals? We live rurally, and one of the reasons I still carry a card is that I can't always get a signal on my phone.

Report
ChrissyPlummer · 10/06/2020 16:52

I preferred the fingerprint option as on my latest phone I have to lean over, especially if the reader is flat on a counter or something. I don’t find face recognition as quick as the fingerprint option.

Report
mylittlesandwich · 10/06/2020 16:58

@Hingeandbracket if you want to increase the chance of your fingerprint being recognised add extra fingerprints in settings but just use your normal finger again. I usually do 2/3 of the thumb I use and it increases how often it's recognised. Mines ok about 99% of the time.

It’s easier because my watch is always on my wrist so I can pay with the double tap of a button!

@Ginfordinner Anecdotal but I managed to use apple pay once when I had no data left on my plan so I would assume it would work without 3G/4G signal.

Report
Poetryinaction · 10/06/2020 17:46

I am not the target audience either. I'd rather have money on me than have to take my phone with me everywhere. I don't like being constantly contactable.

You definitely don't need signal. My local shopping centre is dire for signal and you can never get your store card apps up. Apple Pay works fine (although their pay stations don't always as the centre WiFi's not great either)
