To ask what is the point of Apple Pay

Apple Pay charges the card registered to it, right? So what is the advantage over just using the card? What am I not seeing here?

Oh and if your thumb print doesn't work then you can just use your passcode

Redtartanshoes · 10/06/2020 18:01

Only problem I have is I use it all the time.. s then. I go to bloody Tesco, £40 limit, use my card, and leave it in the twatting machine: I’ve lost 4 cards this year already 😂😂😂

MeAgain2020 · 10/06/2020 18:07

Ha! I thought that, until once at work when I realised I'd left my purse at home. So then I could still get my lunch and some shopping and just pay with my phone.
It's one of those things you think what's the point until you need to use it.
Chances are - you will always have one or the other. Your purse or your phone, so it is handy!

midnightstar66 · 10/06/2020 18:08

Tesco really needs to up their game lol, I mean I expect it of Asda but .....

midnightstar66 · 10/06/2020 18:11

@MeAgain2020 too true. I set mine up in an aisle of Asda when I realised I'd done just that with a full trolley of shopping. Thankfully my phone had the long number stored and I remembered the security code. Saved returning all the shopping and going home for it. Never looked back.

MissConductUS · 10/06/2020 18:15

Another advantage I don't think anyone has mentioned is that the merchant never sees your credit card number, so it's not vulnerable if they're hacked.

I love paying with my Apple watch. So quick and easy and no touching required. Apple Pay is really brilliant.

imsooverthisdrama · 10/06/2020 18:37

I bloody love it , I have a Apple Watch and hardly ever use my card .
A card you can only use contactless up to £45 , Apple Pay is £250.
I think it's more secure , you can loose you card and it can be used .
Apple Pay they can't use my watch it has a PIN number when not on and watch is finger print scan .

PuntoEBasta · 10/06/2020 18:42

I generally have one or two loyalty cards

Me too, but if I'm using scan as you shop in Sainsbury's or Waitrose then I only have to get the card out once to release a handset, and then I don't need to get my purse out again as I pay with my phone.

Carolbaskinstiger · 10/06/2020 18:46

I was like you op - couldn’t see the point. The. Dh accidentally went to work with my main bank card just one time too many, and I thought “oh it will be a good backup to have the card on my phone”.

Totally wouldn’t be without it now - so much easier than a card - no limit on contactless, easy to use, no need for a purse.

jcurve · 10/06/2020 18:49

You definitely don’t need signal or WiFi for Apple Pay as I’ve bought food on BA flights a few times (when, obviously, neither are possible).

MuthaClucker · 10/06/2020 18:49

It's great. I always have my phone with me, but I don't always have my card. Plus it's more secure.

Mnthrowaway20202 · 10/06/2020 19:09

I didn’t realise Apple Pay was available on the old models with thumbprint.

My iPhone 6 had Apple pay in 2014. Each bank supported it in their own time though - I remember only being able to use my Barclays debit card in 2016.

Also my iPhone is utter shite at recognising my thumbprint - it works about 25% of the time

You haven’t calibrated it properly - do it again. Fingerprint unlocking is generally considered the gold standard amongst tech reviewers, as it’s faster/more efficient than facial recognition unlocking - and that’s for both Apple and competitor products. It wouldn’t have such an esteemed reputation if it only worked 25% of the time.

Mnthrowaway20202 · 10/06/2020 19:10

more efficient should say more accurate

Abbccc · 10/06/2020 19:11
@Abbccc be a bit heavy to carry £40 of coins around.
Yes,fair enough Grin. I have these other things that are as light as a small piece of paper that I can carry around if I want to spend lots of money.

Mairyhinge · 10/06/2020 19:15

How do I use Apple Pay to get money out of machines?? Can someone explain please?

imsooverthisdrama · 10/06/2020 20:29

Oh I've never done that @Mairyhinge I think that may be the only times I use my card .
I know i can use my bank app to withdraw cash by using pin instead of card but don't think Apple Pay .

There are cash machines in other countries that support Apple Pay, but I have never seen one in the UK. Some banks do allow you to use their app at a cash machine instead.

missyoumuch · 11/06/2020 00:02

Apple Pay transactions are tokenised which means a random number is generated instead of your credit card number. If there is a data breach at the shop the random number will show while your actual credit card number remains concealed. So it’s safer for security reasons also.

AgadorSpartacus · 11/06/2020 00:14

The best example I have is 2 weeks ago I got to the till in Sainsbury’s to find that DS still had my bank card from the day before. I hadn’t enough cash so just whipped out my phone and used Apple Pay.
It was invaluable to me then.

chelle862 · 11/06/2020 00:28

If you lose/have stolen/damage your card as soon as your card issuer processes a new card (normally over night) Apple Pay updates and you can use it before your card gets to you Smile

Yep! Along side having no limit (on machines which are enabled to accept it, some only use the contactless limit of £30/£45) your card numbers aren't stored on your device and they send a one time dynamic security code so your actual card number isn't ever shown, unlike contactless when I believe the last 4 digits of your card number are on the receipt. This along with the fact to use it you must have your fingerprint, Face ID or passcode makes it safer than just contactless IMO.
Catastrofuck · 11/06/2020 00:50

Haha I love a sneery “I hate the idea of being contactable all the time” as though those of us who do actually have to be contactable all the time are needy wankers glued to our phones (I have dependents whose carers just seem to insist on being able to get hold of me and modern life has provided a means for that)

WhitbyGoth · 11/06/2020 02:00

And when the technology crashes, because one day it will, none of you will have access to your money! Always have cash on you.

Catastrofuck · 11/06/2020 07:31

I got money out before lockdown. Can’t give it away right now

Austriana · 11/06/2020 07:34

I pretty much only use Apple Pay these day, and increasingly online too.
