To be shocked that this was ever ok?! Blackface on Little Britain...

Hello. I've just been looking at the Daily Mail (sorry) and there is a thing about this. I was genuinely gobsmacked seeing the photo and it's completely offensive. However, at some time in the not-so-distant past, this was seen as mainstream comedy and I remember it being on primetime telly. So a critical mass of people must have thought this was ok? I never really watched little Britain and this sketch in particular made me want to heave, but I think at the time it was rather for its horrible portrayal of women generally. I don't remember outrage over it at the time. But maybe there was? I guess I'm just ashamed that comedy like this could have been screened in my adult lifetime.

@Haenow
'I’m mixed heritage and I do not look white. I assume I’m allowed an opinion? I can see why it’s been deemed racist (and ableist and sexist). I don’t judge people who laughed back then but I judge those who won’t listen to all voices and assume there’s zero elements of systemic discrimination.'

This 100%.
This is such a valid point and so many others have made statements along similar lines. I haven't finished reading the thread, I may not I've found some of these comments really disheartening. As if the shutters are down if you don't like it you know what you can do. Almost akin to the BLM protesters that were abused while peacefully protesting in Hertfordshire, complete lack of understanding of the issue. You don't have to relate but at least try to see.
I'm not a dolphin but I don't need to be a rocket scientist to see the issues that surround and affect them......if I wanted to that is.

Merryweather80 · 11/06/2020 10:55

I completely agree with @Lockeduporknockedup it’s a depiction of the lowest of society. It’s not racist, ageist, homophobic etc. Take it for its intended purpose and stop falling onto the media’s way of telling you what to think depending on the current popular narrative.
I’m very disabled (Wheelchair bound) and breastfeeding- I find neither sketch appalling- it’s comedy based on society’s lows.

Some of you are only ‘finding this offensive’ because it’s currently popular to do so because of what happened to a criminal in America. What’s happening now with the historical statues being demolished is exactly how Isis started and gained recruitment.
We can’t change history. We knew no better then, we do now. It time everyone accepted that and lived in peace. Yes there are incidents of racism, homophobia, sexism, ageism etc and these should be justly felt with. The current protests do nothing to even the playing field.
It’s time to just stop. Live life in peace and stop being offended at what seams to be everything.

Don’t bother, you haven’t said anything interesting enough.

Wowwe · 11/06/2020 11:27

And Matt Lucas dressed up as middle aged white women , no ones got a problem with that?

ShebaShimmyShake · 11/06/2020 11:39

I always thought Little Britain was making fun of the stereotypes themselves? That they were exaggerating them to become self-parodies and therefore showing us how silly they were? I don't know, I was very young when it was on so maybe I misread or am not recalling it properly.

I did always like the scene where Vicky Pollard's social worker asked where her baby was and was told she had swapped it for a Westlife CD. "Vicky, I can't believe you did that!" "Yeah, I know, they're rubbish..."

Lexilooo · 11/06/2020 12:03

Apparently now Gone with the Wind has been removed from streaming services.

I think it is rather a shame that Hattie McDaniel's performance for which she won an oscar (and was the first black actor to do so) won't be seen.

I haven't seen the film recently but I don't recall there being anything of concern beyond a depiction of life as it was in the deep south at the time of the civil war, which suggests that many historical films could be affected.

* get your popcorn, wine, gin. I’ll expect a shit storm.*

You’ve said nothing that hasn’t been said similarly before on the thread. Multiple times.

Juliet2014 · 11/06/2020 12:13

@Merryweather80

* I was out with my two dads and in my wheelchair. We were sat in a coffee shop having a quiet five when a older gentleman said to my eldest dd ”you're lucky aren't you” Dd looked at the man confused ”out with your aunt for the day” I intervene at this point and said ”I'm not their aunt I'm their mom” man:” oh they're adopted then are they” me ”no, why” man: ”well it's just that you're in, an er, cripple so I assumed you couldn't have any”.............*
Vast assumptions made by people who clearly haven't thought before speaking

You posted this. In your next comment to this you said you were floored by the audacity of the comment and that you hoped it didn’t ruin the day for your daughter.

You were right to be appalled. You were right. It was deeply offensive wasn’t it?

Juliet2014 · 11/06/2020 12:15

* In all honesty, I was floored by the audacity. He quickly tried to backtrack before leaving. My youngest was crying. She was 2/3 at the time. I'm not sure she understood what had been said. It ruined our day out though.*

In fact it did ruin your day.

Not only that, but she became close friends with Clark Gable while making the film. In one state, she was refused entry to the premiere because she was black, and Gable refused to attend if she couldn't.

Its been removed because the portrayal of slaves is sanitised, and it’s only been removed while they add a disclosure about it before the film starts.

Yep like no one has a problem with Walliams dressed as an old lady pissing herself, because older women with urinary issues due to childbirth are totally invisible.
Pumperthepumper · 11/06/2020 12:54

This has been talked about already, did you ask Netflix to remove it because of the drag or the incontinence? Or are you just tacking it onto this thread to deflect from the racism?

Not deflect, but it is possible to feel pissed off about 2 separate issues.
tentative3 · 11/06/2020 13:27

Sorry not to address the person who asked but I've lost track of where I saw the question but yes, drag is offensive to me. I've read a lot of discussion about it and seen some interesting counter arguments, some of which do make me think but my overall impression is that it is offensive.

I didn't watch LB much when it was on, this is a genuine question: did they ever dress up as privileged white men and ham it up?

Paintedmaypole · 11/06/2020 13:38

Little Britain was crap at the time IMO and I couldn't see anything funny about it. Some programmes are just of their time but this was always offensive and unfunny. Whoever called it satire hasn't understood what satire is.

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/06/2020 13:53

@Ladywinesalot

And yeh after Matt Lucas dresses up as an indian child whilst playing the drums on vik & bobs show thought he was a racist piece of shit.

Eh? George Dawes wasn't an indian child?! He was a baby, and then that developed into various mini sketches and characters.

VeganVeal · 11/06/2020 14:50

Ha ha, the pirate memory game, brilliant

Bear6 · 11/06/2020 15:03

If little Britain has been taken down because a white man is dressed as a black person then I wonder if white chicks will no longer be shown?

God, what a fantastic point, you’re the only person in this massive thread to make this comparison.
RachelGreen45 · 11/06/2020 15:26

@Lockeduporknockedup couldn’t agree more!

Bear6 · 11/06/2020 16:08

It was brushed aside so quickly I must have missed it. It seems it doesn’t matter when it’s the other way around 🤦🏼‍♀️

Why would white chicks be removed?
Bear6 · 11/06/2020 16:37

Why wouldn’t it, it’s exactly the same thing?

Pumperthepumper · 11/06/2020 16:53

How is it exactly the same thing?
