To not want to go to shop to get stuff for school science experiment?

I don’t think I should have to do this.
Ds, year 7,following usual school timetable from home. science lesson involves a simple experiment with a red cabbage. I put one on my shopping order, but delivery today says it’s not available.
AIBU to not want to go to various supermarkets looking fur a bloody red cabbage in the middle of a pandemic?
I haven’t been out to the shops( had grocery deliveries)
Yes I’m aware people have to go to work as normal, but I’m not. My ds only has me, so I’m not taking an risks.
Am I massively overreacting, are they going to laugh at me if I say I’m not going out for a bloody cabbage

Why are all the alternative veggie suggestions red veg?

May be easier to get hold of in local shops or at all or OP could have had them in already and some have same checmical needed for the indicator experiment.

The clear deliniation of the mental outlook of those who have been out and about every day for the past two months, and those who have stayed in self-imposed isolation is stark. Very stark.

We've been out like the OP.

We don't drive and usually get most of the shopping delivered with top up from local shops but they won't have red cabbage - though they more likely to have the household or alternative indicators suggestions.

Normally we'd be on way to places to and fro - and just pop into bigger supermarkest on way back but now have less time than normal as wfh is often taking longer and the kids are around needing help and encourgement with study.

Add in extra faff with shopping in supermarkets and suddenly whole long walk there looks like a bloody pain in the arse.

It's why we've looked at altenatives not because of mindset is different but because our lives currently are.

Thank you for answering enjoying.

I agree. We adapt.

I'm an essential worker (non-NHS/not retail) and out most days. Lockdown has provided so many silver linings for us in our field.

I see that (including my much loved friends of mine) many people incorrectly think 'it is like the Zombie Apocolypse out there!!!!'.

There may be 50 people in the local park being totally, physically seperated from anyone not in their household, but the mentally anguished will process this as "50 people in park all hugging for an hour together spreading a virus!!!!"

This pandemic is highlighting various levels of critical thinking amongst the population.

And does everyone send their 12 yr olds to the supermarket right now? He wouldn’t have a clue!!

Are you serious?! Your 12 year old doesn't know how to shop in a supermarket?!

I clearly said right now. You know, in a national pandemic. With arrows on the floor and queuing and masks and no contact. So, no, I’m not sending out my 12 yr old, in my place, to pop out for a non essential item

That's fine, but there's absolutely no reason why he shouldn't be able to cope with the supermarket! It's probably easier now than ever.

Comefromaway · 11/06/2020 10:49

When the schools closed they put the fear of god into the kids about staying indoors, not going out except when essential etc. My son really took that to heart. I know things have relaxed a little but you can’t have it both ways.

savetti · 11/06/2020 11:34

ITonyah- he has special needs, so there’s plenty of reasons
And really, you can’t see why a child would be nervous or anxious about going in a shop right now? Not necessarily about catching a deadly disease, but about what the right thing to do is?

Always good to mention that up front Hmm

And my 13 year old has been twice already, but she's NT and together.

savetti · 11/06/2020 11:41

Yeah, cos it was really relevant to the red cabbage issue

Together?? You’re suggesting that if a child is anxious or nervous about going to a supermarket now, then they’re not together ?

Why on earth would a NT 12 year old be nervous about going to the supermarket?! If they can queue up and follow a one way system and try to stay 2m away from people they'll be fine. It's easier than normal atm, no bun fighting.

I don't know, but I was the first time I had to do it and I hadn't been more or less confined to the house for 3 months. Of course it's nerve wracking doing something you've never had to deal with before, even if it's just not knowing what the "form" is.

ITonyah · 11/06/2020 11:54

Yes dd was a bit tentative the first time she went as was I.

She's been shopping for the old people in the village regularly throughout, she's quite disappointed that somenof them are now going out by themselves!

HouchinBawbags · 11/06/2020 11:58

Mine keep asking us to bake.

Unless I'm growing and milling my own wheat, I'm not wasting whatever flour I have on sodding school crafts and experiments. It's still out of stock round here except the super duper expensive "packaged just for the pandemic" stuff. A small decorative bag for £3 a pop? More than twice the price of big standard co-op flour.

Don't do the school stuff. If you don't have flour, red cabbage, PVA glue, A4 coloured card or whatever else they're asking for then don't do it.

ginsparkles · 11/06/2020 12:03

Don't go. We have been adapting lots of lessons at home if we don't have the stuff. I don't have paints at home so if an art thing comes up that needs paint, we find something else art related to do instead. Find a video showing the experiment and watch it together, find another fun science experiment to do instead.
