To not want to go to shop to get stuff for school science experiment?

savetti · 09/06/2020 07:33

I don’t think I should have to do this.
Ds, year 7,following usual school timetable from home. science lesson involves a simple experiment with a red cabbage. I put one on my shopping order, but delivery today says it’s not available.
AIBU to not want to go to various supermarkets looking fur a bloody red cabbage in the middle of a pandemic?
I haven’t been out to the shops( had grocery deliveries)
Yes I’m aware people have to go to work as normal, but I’m not. My ds only has me, so I’m not taking an risks.
Am I massively overreacting, are they going to laugh at me if I say I’m not going out for a bloody cabbage

Either don’t do it, or do it another day, or watch someone else do it on YouTube.
Really doubt the teacher will give a monkeys.

Kittio · 10/06/2020 00:31

Oh fgs, I don’t have lemon juice or baking soda or bleach Just get them to watch it on YouTube and write it up like the first person to reply suggested.

PickAChew · 10/06/2020 00:34

It's not in season, though jarred read cabbage, rinsed, does work, if you're making indicator.

canigooutyet · 10/06/2020 00:36

Red cabbage slaw is amazing. I don’t use mayo and it’s lush. I stopped using mayo years ago in all sales as the mayo stuff kept getting left.

I wouldn’t be going out buying anything special.
If there’s not a video available then the experiment would have to wait until we needed a red cabbage again. And cos there’s only 2 of us we quickly get fed up of the stuff.

canigooutyet · 10/06/2020 00:37

It’s not even in season? 😂
No wonder I haven’t really noticed them online

YoungsterIwish · 10/06/2020 00:41

They are not in season and don't seem to be being imported around here as there are green varieties in season.

Back to the drawing board, school!

SleepingStandingUp · 10/06/2020 00:47

If he needs it then he needs it he's yr7 and not returning to school this academic year / sitting any exams, I assume it's the pH experiment, so no, he doesn't NEED it. It's fun, I did it for uni, but he doesn't need to do it.

OP id see if a mate can leave you half of one, you don't need the whole thing unless theyre tiny

Pipandmum · 10/06/2020 00:53

If you are so cautious that you haven't been to the shops in 10 weeks then don't make a special trip just for this. But you do need to get out there at some point.
I have no problems going to the shops - I'm a single parent and needs must - so I would go get the cabbage (though actually I have one in my fridge).

“He will have to explain why” and? We’re in the middle of a pandemic. Pretty sure they’re not going to say what a pathetic excuse you’ve failed everything and now your GCSES are fucked. You’re worrying about nothing, OP!

bridgetreilly · 10/06/2020 09:02

He will have to explain why

There were no red cabbages in our supermarket delivery or in the shops we were reasonably able to visit in line with the government's current coronavirus pandemic guidance.

How hard is that?

WowLucky · 10/06/2020 09:12

If be inclined to send him, just for something to do but school won't even notice, you don't need to "tell" them anything.

sirfredfredgeorge · 10/06/2020 09:20

Why wouldn't the Y7 kid go to the supermarket, why would it be the parent anyway?

SleepingStandingUp · 10/06/2020 09:43

@sirfredfredgeorge

Why wouldn't the Y7 kid go to the supermarket, why would it be the parent anyway?
Erm, social distancing, not touching stuff easier for adults, paying by card, shops might not be waking distance, lots of crazy people around who would be verbally aggressive to a kid getting to near or accidentally doing stuff they shouldn't?
greathat · 10/06/2020 09:46

Just watch it on YouTube. It's a really nice experiment we usually do with year 7. Try and get one some other time.

WowLucky · 10/06/2020 09:56

Am I the only person who's going to have to look up this experiment to find out what it's all about?

Homemadeandfromscratch · 10/06/2020 10:05

Blimey, ignore the ridiculous replies, if you don't go shopping usually, no don't go for a red cabbage.

I wouldn't either. I have food shop delivery exclusively, I have neither time nor will to waste for 1 item. Don't worry about it, follow excellent advice from above.

Livpool · 10/06/2020 10:05

I wouldn't necessarily go out for 1 item BUT you do sound overly cautious in general

Comefromaway · 10/06/2020 13:53

Well some of the other threads I’ve been reading on here about people not social distancing in supermarkets make me think that people like me & the OP are not being overly cautious.

savetti · 10/06/2020 14:13

Bloody hell!
I’m not terrified to go out
I go out every day to walk the dog and to care for a relative.
I just haven’t been to the shops as I’ve had deliveries
And I’ve actually made do. So not popped out for one thing
I’m not trailing round all the supermarkets , all of which have queues outside to find one item in a national pandemic!
I just wanted to gauge whether the teacher would think I was unreasonable if I cited that I hadn’t been shopping at all in lockdown.

I emailed the teacher, made a joke about national red cabbage shortage and she emailed back saying all the schools must be doing practicals.
It’s fine, all good.

And does everyone send their 12 yr olds to the supermarket right now?
He wouldn’t have a clue!!

OP posts:
HugeAckmansWife · 11/06/2020 07:38

My DS is 10. In 3 months he'll be getting a public bus alone to secondary school. By 12 yes I would be sending him to the supermarket a ten min walk away for a few bits of he needed them. Not right now, but in normal times I actually make a point if taking both kids to do the shop so they learn how to do it. It's a life skill.

razey · 11/06/2020 07:51

@wowlucky no I have as well
I feel
Overwhelmingly tempted to do it
I am a grown adult ffs😂

ITonyah · 11/06/2020 07:54

@ListeningQuietly

Get the cabbage. Use three leaves for the science experiment. Make 1/4 of the cabbage into cole slaw (with raising, apple, walnut pieces, lemon juice and mayo) Make 1/4 of the cabbage into stir fry with soy sauce Make 1/4 of the cabbage into saurkraut Steam 1/4 of the cabbage and serve with onion gravy and toad in the hole

misses point of thread

Are you serious?! Your 12 year old doesn't know how to shop in a supermarket?!

PurpleHoodie · 11/06/2020 08:11

This is one of my favourite threads posted all week.

The recipes suggestions are great: thank you.

Is the experiment about clocks? Timers? Electricity? Why are all the alternative veggie suggestions red veg?

The clear deliniation of the mental outlook of those who have been out and about every day for the past two months, and those who have stayed in self-imposed isolation is stark. Very stark.

Food waste: No need to waste (even if you don't like the food in the experiment). Use the lesson to teach children how to to sterilize kitchen equipment when touching the food. Re-purpose the food as compost, or donate to those who need to eat.

I've also learned that children these days can find so many teaching aids on YouTube. Thanks.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 11/06/2020 09:05

The experiment will be to make a natural indicator. You boil up the cabbage and then use the coloured water to test various household chemicals to test for acidity and alkalinity as there will be a colour change.

Incidentally if you use a spoonful of the coloured water in a frying pan and fry an egg it turns the egg white green so you can have 'green eggs and ham' for breakfast.
