To not want to go to shop to get stuff for school science experiment?

savetti · 09/06/2020 07:33

I don’t think I should have to do this.
Ds, year 7,following usual school timetable from home. science lesson involves a simple experiment with a red cabbage. I put one on my shopping order, but delivery today says it’s not available.
AIBU to not want to go to various supermarkets looking fur a bloody red cabbage in the middle of a pandemic?
I haven’t been out to the shops( had grocery deliveries)
Yes I’m aware people have to go to work as normal, but I’m not. My ds only has me, so I’m not taking an risks.
Am I massively overreacting, are they going to laugh at me if I say I’m not going out for a bloody cabbage

Do you really think the school are going to give much of a shit?

Of course you don’t need to make a special trip to get a cabbage.

londonscalling · 09/06/2020 14:31

Just email the teacher and tell them what's happened. I had a similar situation for a cookery lesson our son had to do at home. I emailed through and asked if he could make something else at home.

starfishmummy · 09/06/2020 14:41

YANBU. The school should not expect people to buy things specially. None of us like red cabbage so I wouldnt want to buy one just to waste most of it. Yes I can afford it, its buying to waste that I object to.

savetti · 09/06/2020 14:53

I’m not having a go at the teacher, not at all
My question was will they think I’m crazy if I say I’m not going out to supermarket.
Unavailable for next shopping delivery.
None in Aldi, none in m &s (my mum looked)
It is compulsory, as in, if he doesn’t do it, he will have to explain why.
I’m sure they’ll say it’s fine

Add to your shopping list and do the experiment another day?

SnuggyBuggy · 09/06/2020 15:01

What are the school going to do? Put you in detention?

Brefugee · 09/06/2020 15:19

that will be because red cabbages aren't in season right now.

(pp suggesting coleslaw and sauerkraut - interesting, have you tried either of those with red cabbage? was it good? I love red cabbage but mostly just eat it the German way)

Brefugee · 09/06/2020 15:19

(that was supposed to be a question about them being in season)

StripyHorse · 09/06/2020 15:27

Just say you are having difficulty getting the red cabbage and will do the experiment when you can get one. I am sure the teacher has had to re-jig the lessons they have planned because they couldn't get the resources (especially food based ones like this). They will understand.

It is hard finding the balance of providing engaging learning, that can ideally be done away from a screen, but not knowing what pupils may have at home. I have tried to give options for pupils but it can't always be done.

enjoyingSun · 09/06/2020 15:38

I'd find an alternative:

Plant Material Containing Anthocyanins (red cabbage, blueberries or blackberries, and purple grape juice).

We've had do do that with the set HE homework not having the equipement or ingredients.

I'm not sure what would have happened if we didn't as they had a deadline to be handed in but none have been marked or look like they will be.

Or find it being done on-line

eddiemairswife · 09/06/2020 15:44

Has he a classmate living near who has one? They could post a few leaves through the letterbox, or leave some on their drive for you to collect. Watching experiments on-line is all very well, but nothing beats doing it yourself. I have fond memories of a class of girls making Chlorine in the Chemistry lab.....we were surrounded by a greenish mist, and spent the next lesson (RE taken by the Head} coughing and spluttering, much to her annoyance. Those were the days before Health and Safety regulations, and Science was much more fun than nowadays.

savetti · 09/06/2020 15:57

Oh fgs, I don’t have lemon juice or baking soda or bleach

GetOutOfThereHoggle · 09/06/2020 16:04

There's no way I would be going out to get one. Not shielding but in an area where R is high. I'm not sending kids back to school as I don't think it's safe enough yet and I lucky enough to have option of keeping them at home. There's no way I'd go round supermarkets with kids in tow just for a red cabbage. We were set something with food dye, which I didn't have. I got a you tube video and that was that. There's no way they'd expect you to go out and trail shops to get one in a pandemic which we aren't already out of, no matter how many people were are allowed to meet with yet. Schools here are now u turning on opening, none open now here, only key-workers. It's most definitely not a necessity OP x

GetOutOfThereHoggle · 09/06/2020 16:10

Have to add, my child's teacher was more than happy with our you tube alternative. They will be trying their best to make things more interesting and hands on for the kids. It won't be an expectation at all. Think they will be thankful that you are able and willing to do the work set. There are thousands of families who either can't help their kids because of wfh or whose kids are not doing much work for whatever reason (it's a slog each day to motivate mine, really hard when trying to bring money in so some days are a total loss, whilst others go quite well). I'm sure they will appreciate whatever you can do (as will your child) x

bookmum08 · 09/06/2020 16:13

He will have to explain why
Easy
"I couldn't do this experiment because I didn't have the equipment required"

Nevertouchakoala · 09/06/2020 16:15

How can you love your life in this fear? Unless you are extremely vulnerable go to the shop, wash your hands.

ForeverBubblegum · 09/06/2020 16:21

You can sub lemon juice for orange, if you have any in. The bleach will be a strong base (alkaline), as will most cleaning products so again you should be able to substitute, just test whatever you have in.

redbigbananafeet · 09/06/2020 16:44

GreyishDays 'ask the school if they'll provide one'? So OP won't go to the shop but a teacher is to not only go to the shop to buy cabbages but then drive round the year group's houses delivering them? Grin

GetOutOfThereHoggle · 09/06/2020 17:34

I don't think it's so much being afraid, for me at least, coming out of lockdown I look at risk vs need. Had to take my youngest to A and E the other night. Was I worried about him getting something? Yes. Did I still take him? Of course cos need outweighed risk. If say need for red cabbage doesn't outweigh risk of dragging kids round several supermarkets. That's just the way I look at it of course. Think everyone will come out of lockdown their own way and I think we all need to accept and respect people different ways of doing it x

ListeningQuietly · 09/06/2020 17:37

@Brefugee
Red cabbage coleslaw is LUSH

  • thinly slice half a cabbage
  • chop up an apple
  • handful of raisins
  • half handful of crushed nuts
stir together, add teaspoon lemon juice and then stir in a big tablespoon of mayo. Cover and put in the fridge for at least a couple of hours. Lasts in the fridge maturing and mellowing for about 5 days CRACKING with BBQ food Grin

OP
Cooking is science - watch some of Heston's videos. Mental.

GetOutOfThereHoggle · 09/06/2020 17:53

@ListeningQuietly ooo that sounds nice.. making note..

Brefugee · 09/06/2020 18:08

@ListeningQuietly
here's me craving that coleslaw! thanks.

Useruseruserusee · 09/06/2020 18:14

Red cabbage slaw is lovely. We make a no mayo version with very finely sliced red cabbage, carrots, lime juice, salt and sesame seeds.

Cremebrule · 09/06/2020 19:21

You didn’t say if you were shielding. If you are then fair enough- I’d want to be cautious if I was in your position. If you’re not shielding then you may well be being a bit disproportionate in your reaction.
