To think JK Rowling is a fabulous human being

I just came across her book, 'Very Good Lives' which is all about overcoming adversity. I think it's so important that successful women talk about the times they've failed and how success is about pushing past that. I'm reading it just at a time I need to hear that message. I can definitely recommend buying a copy if you are in need of a boost or have some pennies to spend on something nourishing.

I was also looking into her charity, Lumos, and I had no idea just how much she was trying to help disadvantaged children. I love that she's putting her money and position to good use.

The term 'national treasure' generally makes me want to poke my own eyeballs out with a rusty kitchen utensil but AIBU to say she is an utter treasure and we are lucky to have her. She makes the world a better place.

That's all!

Why do people think mentioning “intersex” (or DSDs as they should be revered to) is some kind of gotcha? These are rare conditions that in 99.9% of cases affect either the male or the female, they do not “prove” the existence of additional sexes, they do the exact opposite!

Flippetydip · 08/06/2020 10:08

@TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair

This blatent attempt to passive aggressively show your support for JK Rowling and the anti-trans movement is sad and disappointing.

I am very sorry to sadden and disappoint a stranger on the internet.

I will go away and think about what I've done.

Grin

I love JK Rowling, I love her writing, I love her support for women.

merrymouse · 08/06/2020 10:08

The words ‘women’ and ‘people who menstruate’ are not, and never have been, synonymous.

Well spotted.

However, only women menstruate and the consequences of having menstruated are on-going. When an adult women does not menstruate it is a symptom of a condition, such as pregnancy, infertility, taking medication, menopause or having undergone a hysterectomy, and all of these conditions have consequences.

Men just don't menstruate.

@zscaler

*That’s why they’re called fiction. And Amber Heard attacked Johnny Depp but don’t let the truth stand in the way of your bias.*

Racism isn’t ok just because it’s expressed via a fictional medium - what a weak excuse for justifying it.

J K Rowling defending Johnny Depp’s casting in 2017, 3 years before audio surfaced of Amber Heard admitting she hit him. Furthermore, AH hitting JD as well as JD hitting AH means both of them should be vigorously condemned. It does not mean Johnny Depp is validated or worthy of being defended.

If your feminism involves defending a man who beats his wife for any reason, you might want to think about where you’ve gone wrong.

Where's the proof that Johnny Depp beat Amber Heard, other than in self defence?
AngeloMysterioso · 08/06/2020 10:10

Ohhh yeah, SO transphobic... 🙄

Because they're thick enough to think it proves their point and vile enough to think intersex people's experiences and existence are theirs to appropriate.
donquixotedelamancha · 08/06/2020 10:11

How did this get to be about trans so quickly? ....This post was about a book she wrote and her philanthropic work.

You are not permitted to say positive things about women who have been deemed Problematic. All her charity work and the many, many hours she spends writing to children should be ignored.

I'm not on twitter but a quick scan of her recent threads saw her being called terf, bitch and hag a lot and a fair number of death threats.

There was (I kid you not) a really agressive letter from a women's charity which ended with a demand for a 'substantial donation' because she had the wrong views.

I also saw a woman who runs a domestic violence charity who only posted to say people shouldn't abuse JK receiving similar abuse. When she complained about death threats one of the posters who sent them chipped in to explain that threats are justified because they are more effective.

TooOldForSims · 08/06/2020 10:11

There are many sexes that do not fall into the binary category of man and woman.

What are these sexes please?

zscaler · 08/06/2020 10:12

@Tanith

If you have a rebuttal, I suggest you share it. If you can’t, it’s because you don’t want to have to do the uncomfortable work or acknowledging that someone you have liked and admired has done things which are not admirable or supportable. Instead of running from it, you should lean into that discomfort. It will help you grow.

She’s amazing. Star

CherryValanc · 08/06/2020 10:15

I think she's great. She could have lost who she was when she became incredibly wealthy but she didn't.

It's fascinating how she's been painted and transphobic. If someone wants to be an identity as a woman, why to erase women and effectively erase what you want to identify as.

What's that about? How is it so? Is it transwomen who want to be called women, but retain their male privilege and dominate over women? Why is it men aren't being erased by transmen?

Palladin · 08/06/2020 10:15

She's brilliant and has a strong sense of ethics.

TooOldForSims · 08/06/2020 10:16

J K Rowling defending Johnny Depp’s casting in 2017, 3 years before audio surfaced of Amber Heard admitting she hit him.

Maybe she knew something we didn't?

There's no evidence he did this. There is irrefutable evidence that her plan was to use the fact she's a woman to garner sympathy and she fully admitted that the public would automatically be on her side and not Depp's once she made an accusation of abuse. She used the natural bias that domestic violence victims are women to hide the fact that she is one herself.

You get onto dangerous ground when speculating about DV, as no one knows what goes on behind closed doors. However, I suspect JK knew a lot more of what was going on there than we did. As a woman, to publicly support him at that time was a bold move which turned out to be correct.

merrymouse · 08/06/2020 10:17

using her huge platform of followers to promote ideas which endanger the lives and wellbeing of trans people is pretty disgusting

Pretending that sex doesn't exist seems far more lethal.

How has she endangered anyones' wellbeing? She talked about sex, not gender.

Many people of different faiths read JK Rowling's books while understanding that she does not share their religious beliefs. Why is it necessary that she should endorse people's beliefs about gender?

DickKerrLadies · 08/06/2020 10:18

Why is it men aren't being erased by transmen?

I've seen women being described as 'non-men' before (IIRC it was a Green Party 'womens' group that said they were open to all non-men but I'm sure someone with a better memory/filing system will correct me if I'm wrong) but I've never seen men being described as 'non-women'. Funny that.

TooSadToSay · 08/06/2020 10:18

I do not know how we have got to a place where it's unacceptable to say that humans are a sexually dimorphic species. It's the biology of reproduction Confused. If you want to have children you have to deal with these facts.

RoyalCorgi · 08/06/2020 10:18

She's marvellous. I like her better all the time.

donquixotedelamancha · 08/06/2020 10:18

May I ask precisely what JKR has said which endangers people's lives?

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 08/06/2020 10:18

She's a star. Star

A very brave & intelligent woman with integrity.

Actually Adventure I think you need to educate yourself and do better Wink

I think JKR is fantastic. I hadn’t realised she had done so much for children through her charity. I also cannot see why standing up for women is transphobic.

TooOldForSims · 08/06/2020 10:19

She used the natural bias that domestic violence victims are women to hide the fact that she is one herself.

And even then it didn't really work because the internet was still full of people taking Johnny Depp's side and calling Amber Heard a liar.

The only place AH received support was on here imo.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 08/06/2020 10:19

I've seen women being described as 'non-men' before

Quite usual in the writing of the early Roman Christians, I believe.

donquixotedelamancha · 08/06/2020 10:20

They have two posts at the head of their NEC: Non-female chair and Non-male chair. As long as you say you are not a man or a woman you can stand for both.

Sonotech · 08/06/2020 10:20

I love her and she is incredibly brave
