To think JK Rowling is a fabulous human being

I just came across her book, 'Very Good Lives' which is all about overcoming adversity. I think it's so important that successful women talk about the times they've failed and how success is about pushing past that. I'm reading it just at a time I need to hear that message. I can definitely recommend buying a copy if you are in need of a boost or have some pennies to spend on something nourishing.

I was also looking into her charity, Lumos, and I had no idea just how much she was trying to help disadvantaged children. I love that she's putting her money and position to good use.

The term 'national treasure' generally makes me want to poke my own eyeballs out with a rusty kitchen utensil but AIBU to say she is an utter treasure and we are lucky to have her. She makes the world a better place.

That's all!

Wonderful article in support of JKR by Megan Murphy in the Spectator US

That Megan Murphy piece is excellent.

RuffleCrow · 13/06/2020 09:32

Star well done Meghan Murphy. Star brilliant article.

FruitPastillesaregood · 13/06/2020 09:44

Can someone post a link to that on JKR’s twitter feed? I don’t have twitter.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 13/06/2020 12:12

I'd like to think JKR is clued up enough that she will be reading it anyway or has enough clever people around her who will send it her way. She's spent 3 years researching this subject so this is someone who will know about MM's work already. It's a brilliant article.

Depressingly of course most people don't think or read beyond soundbites, and those that do stick to their area of interest (nobody has in depth knowledge of or interest in everything).

For this reason I get the impression from casual conversation that most people have only heard Daniel Radcliffe appologising for some awful thing JK Rowling is supposed to have done and think she's come out with racist statements.

Most people don't actually know what she said, only that a shitstorm has been whipped up around her.

Its important this be corrected but I don't know how, as mud and shit stick and the truth is dull, uncontroversial and unremarkable and doesn't work well as click bait...

FruitPastillesaregood · 14/06/2020 14:16

Twitter is not a good forum for proper discussion, it’s a knee jerk ‘post it and then think ‘ sort of medium. Posts are short and don’t give an opportunity for proper debate. I think younger people in particular read the sound bite quickly and jump to conclusions. I have tried to talk about it to my adult children, but their reaction is a hair trigger one of ‘she’s transphobic’. It’s really depressing.
That’s why I think linking to articles on twitter is helpful, because then maybe critics will read a well thought out defence of her position.

those who allow a few women to drown, so they can keep their hair dry

I imagine MM is alluding to the likes of the Wealth-by-Potter cowards EW, DR, ER and RG.

Neil Oliver has written a piece in support of JKR in the Sunday Times today. He is always a voice of reason and common sense.

RuffleCrow · 14/06/2020 22:41

Ooh, he's my other Scottish crush. Or maybe my other, other Scottish crush in light of recent events @FruitPastillesaregood. Do you have a share token/link?

FruitPastillesaregood · 14/06/2020 23:31

I don’t sadly. I read it in the actual paper.
Camilla Long has also written a supportive piece. She can be really vicious and unpleasant but this time her writing is on the nail.
I love Neil Oliver!

FruitPastillesaregood · 14/06/2020 23:32

Here is the link but it’s behind a paywall sadly.
