To think JK Rowling is a fabulous human being

I just came across her book, 'Very Good Lives' which is all about overcoming adversity. I think it's so important that successful women talk about the times they've failed and how success is about pushing past that. I'm reading it just at a time I need to hear that message. I can definitely recommend buying a copy if you are in need of a boost or have some pennies to spend on something nourishing.

I was also looking into her charity, Lumos, and I had no idea just how much she was trying to help disadvantaged children. I love that she's putting her money and position to good use.

The term 'national treasure' generally makes me want to poke my own eyeballs out with a rusty kitchen utensil but AIBU to say she is an utter treasure and we are lucky to have her. She makes the world a better place.

That's all!

Can someone please identify where she has "promote[d] ideas which endanger the lives and wellbeing of trans people"?

I don't see how saying that there is a word for people who menstruate could fall in that box so it must be something else. Which ideas are you referring to?

Zoecarter · 08/06/2020 09:25

@peachgreen 100% agree I need to leave Mumsnet tho it makes me to angry at the transphobia on here

AllIMissNowIsTheSea · 08/06/2020 09:27

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe a lot of non parents use it too - by your logic it'll just have to be called genericnet or anyonenet or just net perhaps...

Could you explain how you define transphobia please?

ghostyslovesheets · 08/06/2020 09:28

Stating facts isn’t anti anything

Why is it endangering anyone to state that women get periods

Ffs I love her!

AnyOldPrion · 08/06/2020 09:28

She’s a strong, courageous woman who speaks her mind despite the consequences. I admire her hugely.

Heartlake · 08/06/2020 09:29

JKR is wealthy, bright and self-assured enough to state facts as they are. Woman = adult human female.

People can live their lives however they like, but the concept of womanhood, and the particular challenges and risks that that brings to women and girls, should not be eroded in my view. JKR stands up for this in public.

She's probably not perfect but she seems like a good egg, and for that, I like her.

WikkiTikkiWoo · 08/06/2020 09:30

JK Rowling is anti misogyny. Not anti Trans.

Show me where men are being renamed? Show me any article where offense is taken at the use of the word, and having men renamed as "sperm producers".

zscaler · 08/06/2020 09:31

Do people forgive the antisemitism and the racism because they’re so happy about her views on transgenderism?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/06/2020 09:32

She's brilliant!

And she publicly stands up for the rights of women and girls against an aggressive trans lobby, while at the same time respecting the rights of trans people to live as they wish.

She repeatedly states the importance of biology (as opposed to "feels") and the necessity of retaining safe spaces for females, where intact, self-declared "women" cannot intrude- and these spaces must include, toilets, changing rooms, women's shelters, women's prisons.

She's been a shining light against male invasion of women's spaces, whilst never once behaving in a transphobic manner (despite what many of the violent self-IDers have claimed). SHehas bee subject to so much abuse and many threats of violence, and never, as far as I am aware, lost her temper (though she did threaten one with legal action when he tweeted that she was a danger to children - that tweet came down sharpish!)

I'm not a Harry Potter fan - just not my thing- but I am very impressed with her as a human being.

using her huge platform of followers to promote ideas which endanger the lives and wellbeing of trans people

How does it endanger the lives and wellbeing of trans people exactly?

This is hyperbole. You've obviously spent far too much time listening to the likes of Munroe Bergdorf who has the bare-faced cheek to stand on a platform and say that as a black transwoman, "her" own life expectancy is 35.

That figure is based on black sex workers in Brazil. Munroe Bergdorf is not a sex worker living in a massively dangerous country. Munroe is a privileged, wealthy media personality who was brought up in a very middle class setting in leafy Bishops Stortford. How DARE Munroe appropriate the suffering and oppression of poverty stricken people in a developing county, in order to manipulate people into not daring to criticise trans people.

Please don't let yourself be suckered by these people.

There is zero evidence that recognising women exist as a distinct category harms trans people. Trans activists may not like it, but that's not the same thing.

AllIMissNowIsTheSea · 08/06/2020 09:34

zscaler

What does "The words ‘women’ and ‘people who menstruate’ are not, and never have been, synonymous" mean?

Do you mean that some women don't menstruate because they are post menopausal, on birth control medication which prevents menstruation, or have a medical condition?

I'm pretty sure that starting menstration did indeed used to be synonomous with womanhood not only in preindustrial society but even in the health education videos of 30 years ago - "never have been" is an odd phrase to add...

MittensTheSerpent · 08/06/2020 09:35

“I respect every trans persons right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it’s hateful to say so."

HOW is this transphobic? How?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/06/2020 09:36

I have put the can in there because some women choose not to menstruate

And some of us are past it.

zscaler · 08/06/2020 09:36

@allimissnowisthesea

It means that women aren’t defined by a narrow biological function like menstruation. Lots of women don’t menstruate. ‘Woman’ means more than menstruation. It’s not controversial.

Oxyiz · 08/06/2020 09:36

Reducing women to "things that menstruate" is fucking awful - and I'm always astounded that some women rush to join in.

feelingverylazytoday · 08/06/2020 09:37

@zscaler

Do people forgive the antisemitism and the racism because they’re so happy about her views on transgenderism?
Could you give examples of these?
Bundlemuffin · 08/06/2020 09:37

YANBU.

She has immense ability; she's created an amazing fantasy world with Harry Potter (not to mention writing other excellent books as well); she uses her intellect and resources to help others and to stand up for the principles she believes in.

TBH I don't think her detractors stand a chance. She can out-think them and out-write them (not to mention out-fund them).

ghostyslovesheets · 08/06/2020 09:37

Yes that would be awful if that was what she had done 😂

Herecomestreble1 · 08/06/2020 09:39

There are many sexes that do not fall into the binary category of man and woman. I literally cannot understand why so many people struggle to grasp that. This blatent attempt to passive aggressively show your support for JK Rowling and the anti-trans movement is sad and disappointing.

AllIMissNowIsTheSea · 08/06/2020 09:39

zscaler woman is a biological category - beyond our biology we're all just people.

JamieLeeCurtains · 08/06/2020 09:40

Lots of women don’t menstruate

Yeah, we know. We're not thick.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/06/2020 09:41

There are many sexes that do not fall into the binary category of man and woman.

Can you list these, please, and also the proportion of humanity which falls into each the categories.

Thank you.

PerfectPenquins · 08/06/2020 09:41

Incredible that an intelligent woman stating biological facts is abhorrent and violent, but the actual threats against her of actual violence- Tara wolf wants to meet her outside and others who have declared she should be curb stomped, stabbed, killed, torn apart are those fine? The posters being cowards and screaming transphobia when there is none is ridiculous. Also widen up your vocabulary if you can only use the word gross and your not 5 years old.
