To wonder why schools are saying they’re not allowed to do live lessons

Because they’ve just started doing them at my ds’s state secondary. We had to fill in an online permission form. So it is possible after all.

And in any event, it is what I honestly believe. I do not think my school has done a good job, at all. However, THEY think that they have, which is interesting. I have no desire to do zoom or any sort of live lessons, but I do think we could and should be offering a lot more. That isn’t goady shite, it may differ from your beliefs but it is my opinion.

SmileEachDay · 07/06/2020 12:51

You’re missing the point, Smile. Education is the way out of that

I’ve swallowed several very rude responses.

FrippEnos · 07/06/2020 12:51

Someone's a goady fucker Hmm

middleofjune · 07/06/2020 12:51

I don’t think live lessons are appropriate either, but I can understand why parents are concerned.

echt · 07/06/2020 12:51

Oh echt, the only GF is you!

What are you on about?

middleofjune · 07/06/2020 12:53

So any dissent with schools, even from someone working in one = GF?

Can some of you really not understand we are not doing ourselves any favours here?

SmileEachDay · 07/06/2020 12:56

middle

Reread your response to me. You are being goady - or perhaps you are naturally patronising?

Dissent from staff is fine - what have you done to challenge that within your department?

Jazzmin · 07/06/2020 12:57

I teach live lessons every day, Independent prep. I was a wreck the first couple of weeks, but I love it now. The interaction I have with the class is good for me and them. They don’t put cameras on and I invite them to speak to answer questions. My point is, I was dreading it but it has been fine. This is only possible due to having the resources, we lent school laptops out to children who didn’t have their own, we have IT support available for parents etc. My children are mostly well behaved, if not I remove them from the lesson with a click of a button!

flumposie · 07/06/2020 12:57

My I internet doesn't support zoom ( have tried for meetings ). I've already bought a new laptop to create narrated PowerPoint which I'm sharing with my daughter for her to complete her school work. If we both had to access on line lessons it would be an issue which I'm sure other families have faced. I know pupils having difficulties accessing my narrated PowerPoints as it is.

FrippEnos · 07/06/2020 12:58

You seem happy to throw around GF, yet are not happy to be called one.

Strange that.

Can you not see that some of what is being asked for is not possible for all schools?

Saying this is a fact, and not about attitude, or putting ourselves in a good light.

middleofjune · 07/06/2020 12:58

I’m not trying to be goady, but I genuinely believe our priorities are skewed.

I’m certainly not going to be rocking the boat, I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how thoroughly unpleasant some schools are to work in. However, I also know that what I am being forced to set as work isn’t acceptable, and I’m sympathising with what parents are saying on MN.

Education is key for a route out of poverty, I really, honestly don’t understand what is either goady or patronising about that.

middleofjune · 07/06/2020 12:59

Of course. I have said from the start I don’t think zoom is suitable - but then we should be looking at what we CAN do, not endlessly saying over and over what we CAN’T.

echt · 07/06/2020 13:01

but then we should be looking at what we CAN do, not endlessly saying over and over what we CAN’T

So get the parents to STFU about why schools/teachers can't won't use Zoom.

SmileEachDay · 07/06/2020 13:01

It’s your assumption that this is news to me. Read the posts I’ve made - even just on this thread - and you’ll see that it really isn’t. The Sutton Trust is my bedtime reading.

Re not rocking the boat - that’s your choice. But don’t assume that all schools are not doing a good job.

What annoys me is that the problems that you are facing are the same as some parents.

Yet according to some on this thread and others you should be buying more equipment and have a "can do" attitude that will solve all your problems.

Its just more bull from people that will not see that teachers are having these problems as well.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/06/2020 13:05

I work in a relatively well to do area. Leafy village. Church school.

On any particular day I have usually 4 kids from 30 who are doing the online stuff I set and are doing it at various times in the day.
The best day will have 8 from 30 doing something.

Going live would bring that down as a lot of the children are doing their school work around their parent's work, due to the age they are. Rather than the other way around.

Some of our parents have told us that they are stressed with fitting in the number of online tasks (3 per day and not onerous) daily, so making them have to be online for a set amount of time at a set time in the day would be even worse for them.

I think that a lot of parents also forget that even with rotas, a lot of teachers are spending a lot of time in the hub schools, supporting and teaching those children. Those days are long and you get no breaks as you are with the children every minute from 8am til 6pm here.

I would be unavailable to teach online that day - and nor would i be able to prepare things to teach either. None of my yeargroup attend the hub so I couldn't stream what I was teaching either as it wouldn't be appropriate for my year group.

Delatron · 07/06/2020 13:06

Microsoft Teams is safe. I too would like to see a more ‘can do’ attitude. Some state primaries are managing this perfectly well. Therefore their pupils will surge ahead and are not missing out..

Current situation is; private schools, full timetable of online lessons.
Some state schools have managed the same. I know of two locally. Not sure why the concerns and issues don’t apply to either schools or how they have overcome them.

The government needs to step in now and issue guidelines for all schools to follow if this shit show is going to continue with millions of children at home. All in different circumstances. You may have a child of key workers/ parents working full time who can’t have any home schooling. Versus a child who is self motivated and has a parent on hand all day to help and encourage.

This disparity and inequality is unacceptable. All children deserve access to a decent education.

This.

Before any parent pisses and moans, they need to consider this.

CuckooCuckooClock · 07/06/2020 13:09

Have you even read the thread middle
I’m sorry for your students that what you and your school are providing is inadequate. Don’t tarnish us all with your brush.

Delatron · 07/06/2020 13:09

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing though. Some days it wouldn’t work, fine. If some state schools are managing it though there must be a way. Even if it’s just a couple of days a week. Even for an hour.

FrippEnos · 07/06/2020 13:09

but then we should be looking at what we CAN do, not endlessly saying over and over what we CAN’T.

And a lot of us are doing what we CAN do, I/we are pointing out what a lot of us CAN'T do because the same question keeps being asked, and the answer hasn't.

And for some posters whatever we do its not and never will be enough.

SmileEachDay · 07/06/2020 13:11

I wonder how much work you’ve done before this to address inequality within education? The single biggest inequality is between independent and state sector. Remote teaching has put this under the spotlight - can you think about why this might be? Why might independent schools, and the more affluent state schools have decided to provide “live lessons” Whereas some other schools have made different decisions.

After this is over: will you be campaigning to dismantle the two tier education system?

FrippEnos · 07/06/2020 13:12

Delatron

Firstly fuck off with the can do attitude.

Secondly, not all private schools are doing full lessons and live lessons.

Nonotthatdr · 07/06/2020 13:17

Dd is in nursery class, small private prep. Not happy with their plans to return and keyworker provison, but am happy with the work set. Not all day zoom because that wouldn’t be appropriate for her age but twice weekly assembly and twice weekly 35min class zoom. It’s really good for her to see her teacher and friends. Recorded in advance would also be fine I think as well. Other work is set - topics of phonics, numeracy and a project. Is uploaded (take a picture of what she’s dine and out in google drive) and marked - this is also important as it gives us the incentive to continue. Would probably prefer some narrated powerpoints rather than the twinkle ones but compared to some it’s ok

If you really are a governor I feel sorry for the staff and students at your school. You seem to have such contempt for the staff and the comments you made about the head and her personal life make it quite likely she would be able to identify herself. Awful - in your position you shouldn't be making comments like you have on the internet.
